Im shocked Tony O didnt cry concussion ala Miller......Tony and his team went right after Derek and took care of it right then and there, although Esposito did have his share of fights with the B's, I miss those great games!!! Go B's!!
Hull was strong as an Ox but Orr had him around the neck. Notice how he says somethigg to Hull and let's go. These 2 guys were both class acts and had respect for each other, and the game itself. You don't see this anymore, sadly.
When bobby orr got the puckon the fly he had moves that no one ever saw befor... he was no doubt the best player ever in the game... the turk was one of the best short handed goal scorers in the game.I hope Hockey can come back to where it was in those days.. alot more interest than there is now.
@TheJacbeegood Those days were the best and the Bruins were a goal scoring fighting take the body machine!! We will never see this again, I was just watching the NHL channel and they were talking the S.J. Sharks, they're saying how they go over in practice what type celebration they're gonna do after they score a goal, I really dont think Espo told Orr that he would skate to center ice and flop like a seal after a big goal, I kinda hate that stuff nowa days!!
Bobby Orr and Bobby Hull were the best hockey players I ever saw. Wayne Gretzky was fantastic, but in the 6 team league he would have gotten his ass kicked.Bobby Orr changed the game forever. He was a fantastic skater,he had the puck all the time, you couldnt get it from him.Great penalty killer. When Bobby Hull got the puck, everybody stood up when he started up the ice.Strongest player ever to play the game.6 team league was awesome, great hockey.
I seem to remember Tony getting into a beef with one of the Watson Brothers on the Flyers at the Spectrum one night. I think it was Jimmy Watson. It almost turned into a fully fledged brawl..
@ottvalley Esposito was a feisty competitor, which is why he is a HOF goalie. He held his own against the goon Sanderson.
As for Orr & Hull, two friends and class acts of hockey who had great respect for each other. I'm a longtime Blackhawks fan, and "Tony O" was my idol as a kid, but there's no arguing the fact that Orr was the greatest player of his generation.
"Lots of kids remember Derek Sanderson as the color commentator for the Bruins, but he was also a proponent of Old Time Hockey. He was known for his brawling style, and was most likely one of the people they had in mind when they invented the Hanson Brothers.... He had cheap-shotted someone the game before, and the Rangers coach put a bounty on him."
Bobby Orr pulling on Bobby Hull? Are you kidding me? This is historic hockey at its best! Tony Esposito! The only thing missing is Gordy Hull picking his nose!!
I saw a preseason game with Boston playing Montreal and saw Sanderson hammer Ken Dryden when he left the net to play the puck. Sanderson skated off and nothing much happened until a similar play only Kenny stayed in the net and let Derek play the puck . When Derek came by the net , Kenny stuck his goalie stick out and Sanderson went flying into the boards. Then all hell broke lose.
Two really strong men. When Hull got his hands on you it was like a pitbull clamping down & Orr would never let up once he got it in his head he wanted you. Boy I miss hockey!
I wish there was some video somewhere of the night Sanderson went into the stands at St. Louis Arena. There was a guy who had seats right behind the visiting team penalty box who always brought a rubber chicken to taunt opposing players with. One night Boston was in town and they guy also had a sign 'Derek Sanderson, the biggest chicken of them all' and after fighting Bob Plager, Sanderson was sent to the box and climbed over the glass to get at the guy with the rubber chicken and sign
Whaaa?? Are you serious??!!! Sanderson never shyed away from anybody: even goalies that deserved it. Were you there back then like I was? Don't you remember him on top of 2 Habs, smashing both of them? Then giving the Forum the piece sign? It was GREAT!!
Thanks for the reply. It gave a little chuckle. Pulling Hull by the head like an animal. I can see what you are saying about that, but he let go on his neck pretty fast and it looked like they were talking. Probably Orr saying "don't kick my ass, I'm only trying to break things up" LOL. Hull was a powerful guy. The "like an animal" part is what cracks me up. In the end , it's all good.
@hockeybooks Checked hockey-reference(dot)com. If Maloney is in this video, it was his rookie year 1970-71 or second year 1972-73. His number with Chicago was #19.
no elbow, vin. He just turned his back and checked him. Tony had no business being out that far. Once you leave the crease, you're fair game, just like anyone else on the ice.
orr is my hero..never seen a potential 2 on 1 diffused with such class..bobby hull had no business there and orr politely,(by fight satandards) reminded him of that. amazing
15 shutouts in a 60 game season. The record still stands as goalies look more and more like the fucking Go-bots. Glenn Hall invented the butterfly, Tony Esposito made it a standard that all goalies live by...Plus Tony had the deepest. most dramatic butterfly.
Dereck was the Bob Probert of the day except for he couldn't skate, couldn't shoot, couldn't fight and do drugs all at the same time. Howz that, better?
Sanderson also was the rookie of the year in 68, and he is the guy who passed Orr the puck for the Stanley Cup winning goal in 70. I guess someone might over look those achievements if they were trying to tear someone down. He was always fun to watch.
you are wright.,Sanderson was a great( Not a word, I use often.) face off man in his day. The sad part is the man was more trouble, then he was worth. So, still would not him, on my team. He was to much of a headache. If you are gong to be that much of a pain in the ass, make you are Gordie Howe. Or some other all time great. Other wise it is not, worth having you.
Something extraordinary happened here that many viewers may have missed. While Orr was very quick to grab Hull (to protect Sanderson), he was very "respectful" in the way he held Hull and, in the last second of the clip, you can see him actually provide his hand to help Hull up. To me, this was a class act of respect from one future hall of famer to another.
Im shocked Tony O didnt cry concussion ala Miller......Tony and his team went right after Derek and took care of it right then and there, although Esposito did have his share of fights with the B's, I miss those great games!!! Go B's!!

Sanderson went after Esposito's head and Esposito rightfully retaliated.
That's a 7 minute penalty these days...You can't police yourself or your team mates anymore and this is why there are so many head shots these days.

dear mfp508.
you can say what you want about Sanderson's abilities but still, he managed to survive.
he is now going in high-schools informing teenagers about the dangers of drugs and alcool.
he is a very honorable person, spending his time to help others. he knows that he screwed everything.
i have respect for people like him.
it is not necessary to degrade them the way you do.
and by the way, he was a good hockey player.
