  • Did he died after the freezing?

  • I just noticed this while watching the movie: at 0:25 until 0:32 he's wearing his jacket in the close-up shots!

  • @einarssone I think thats just the shadows on his shirt.

  • @DexterM187 Nope, It's his jacket. It's been fixed in the new release, though.

  • I love that carbonite freezer sound, probably in my top 2 favorite sounds of the star wars movies

  • His arms were tied behind his back before the freezing. In the carbonite, his hands are infront of him. You cant explain that

  • Han: I was frozen today!

  • Leia: I love you!

    Han: I know...

Leia: Well arent you gonna say it back?

Han: hurry the fuck up with the carbonite!

  • Leia: I love you!

    Dude: I know.

    cocky bastard xD.....!

  • But i do like the harry potter series better.

  • why are we comparing star wars and harry potter i love the harry potter series and star wars

  • Well, I can imagine worse fates, like DYING :p

  • Thats what your mom sounds like when i bang her too hard.. 00:37

  • Yah Harry Potter is way better

  • omg that was pretty good, every man should answer like that, its very interesting

  • 0:24 wow

  • Chewie's crying when Han was going down added music into it and made the scene a whole lot more emotional.

  • Leia: I Love You

    Han: I Know.

    Chewie: *roars*

Han: That I did not know.

  • @GreenCollegeMan it means i wanna fuck you in chew lenguage

  • "I Love You." -Lois/Leia

    "F#@k Off." -Peter/Han

  • Stormtrooper: Um... Sir?

Darth Vader: Wait for it... wait for it... wait for it.

    Leia: I love you.

    Han: I know.

    Darth Vader: Now!

  • Leia: I love you.

    Han: I know.

    Me: XD

  • his hands were cuffed going in, how did they come off?

  • FUCK YOU TWILIGHT! Han and Leia is wayyyy better than Bedward

  • Weren't his hands just tied up?....

  • Hello?! Is it me you're looking for ...?

  • Noticed a blooper in this scene: when Han was placed into center and when he was dropping, he was wearing all white. However, when he said "I know" and looked at Leia and then looked downwards, he was wearing a black shirt over the white.

  • @heathovc Exactly!

  • Han being lowered down is one of the finest scenes in cinematic history. Everything plays so well together - the performances are all on stunning form, but it's the soundtrack that works so well for me - the sound effects of machinery, the heart punching music, and Chewbacca's roar! It all works so well you can't take your eyes off what's happening.

  • "Call me stinky? I freeze your fucking boyfriend, bitch."

  • Empire Strikes Back is much better than Lord of the Rings is

  • @MaadDawg1 Harry Potter is a great film and book series, but to be frank, Star Wars leaves it in the dust.

  • @jamocha101 did you watch all the movies?

  • Leia: "I LOVE YOU!"

    Hon Solo: "I know"

    Best response ever

  • Leia: Dad what the hell you froze my boyfriend!?

Darth: Sweetie I told you to stay out of my f*cking work!

Darth: go back in the ship..

    Leia:But..

Darth: GET BACK TO THE GOD D*MN SHIP!

  • Boba: He's no good to me dead

Vadar: He's no good to me while he's fucking my daughter and hanging out with a giant carpet for company!

    AMAZING SCENE

  • Leia: I love you

    Han: Mother f**ker

  • I love it how nobody tried to do something, when he was going down to be frozen and killed?

  • Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy!

  • Darth Vader didn't want his daughter goin' out with that one

  • Leia: I love you!

    Han: I know.

    Chewie: (roars)

Han: (shcoked) That, I did NOT know.

  • Leia: Daddy how could you! You froze my boyfriend!

  • 0:58 to 1:00

better than the entire prequels combined.

  • Darth Vader should be giving Han a medal in this part because according to the deleted scene on the Phantom Menace he too had a problem with Greedo and what did Han do? That Stone cold pimp kept his pimp hand strong and ghetto blasted that punk bitch first. Style points for shooting him from underneath the table. Because thats how he rolls.

  • Pimp status and a muscle car for a space ship. Bad ass.

  • BEST MOVIE OF ALL. END OF STORY.

  • My sister was laughing at this, because we just saw an episode of "The Boondocks" ("The Fun-Raiser") with a parody of this part.

  • Anyone notice that Hans arms were restrained when they put him in but after he was frozen his hands were up in a position that would not be possible with the restraints on them where they were at?

  • @crazykipspsychoward The Ugnaughts (those little guys) removed Han's handcuffs just before he was lowered into the freezing chamber.

And the reason his hands were in that position. Well, that was Irvin Kershner's idea after he saw the original "frozen Han" prop, which showed Han's arms at his side, like he was at rest. Kersh had it changed to the position you see in the final film, saying that Han would be "fighting to the end."

  • @Tubewings Actually, I thought that also. It looks like that's what they are doing, but if you look close after they move away, you can still see them on his hands. and when he is being lowered.

  • leia: I love you.

    Han: I know.

    Chewie: ROAR!

Han: That I did NOT know!

  • anyone notice that when you are watching this on dvd or on tape that hans looks like james from Big Time Rush? also C3P0's right leg is silver while the rest of him is gold. what up wit dat?

  • I wonder what it would be like in there.

  • thumbs up if family guy took you here

  • 0:58 One of my favorite all time shots, Irvin Kershner is a genius

  • @MrTakadatsu Why the fuck you watching this video then? lol

  • @SJMJ91 idk i think wrong click ..btw i was little drunk .

  • Lois: I love you...

    Peter: Fuck off.

  • han has his hands cuffed before he is frozen, yet his carbonized self has his hands forward

  • Look at 0:31. He suddenly wears a jacket.

  • @DenGudomlige Ahhhh very well spotted lol

  • Comment removed

  • this what would happn to me if i ever join the dem party

  • HAN WAS FROZEN TODAY!

  • why does darth vadar stop bubba fett from shooting chewbacca?

  • Who in your opinion is a cooler Harrison Ford character, Han Solo or Indiana Jones?

  • @HelloFade2 Definitely Indy!!!

  • @HelloFade2

that guy from "fucking ben affleck"

  • awsome reply ! this is a real man !

  • Leia: I love you...

    Hon: Fuck off...

  • @MegaMangaking Han..

  • I WAS FROZEN TODAY!

  • Poor Chewie.

  • Movie Magic

  • Im sure Darth Vader doesnt like the fact that his daughter is being dated by a Pimp

    I Love You.

    I Know.

    BADASS lol

  • Strong scene, strong emotions...

  • "I love you."

    "I know."

    Spoken like a true badass...

It's no wonder Harrison Ford's acting career skyrocketed while the others pretty much plummeted into the ground.

He just plays the hilarious badass far too well to be kept out of Hollywood.

  • han solo should have said "fuck off" like he did in the family guy version :P

  • I love you.

    I know.

If only I could be that confident!!!!

  • i'm guessing the original carbonite prop from this scene is somewhere in Lucas' private collection. The auction price for it would be insane.

  • "Like Han Solo I know!" is a saying i came up with and hope catches on.

  • i just evligased

  • I remember when I first watched this movie when I was a little kid I got really sad because I thought Han Solo died, btw Han Solo is the freaking best star wars character of all time.

  • well now we know what obama did to bush

  • @dragonzord23 uh.. i get it but keep trying lol

  • Han Solo = Da Trilleste

  • Hey....is it just me..or is this video a little higher pitched then the movie? I just noticed that! I played back and listened to it, and I'm like, "Hey wait a minute. Leia's voice isn't that high!!!!" Hey I should know; episode 5 is my favorite ^_^.

  • @StarWarsGirl7

The tune around 0:30 is in F Major here... dunno what pitch it's on "in the movie", but feel free to compare.

  • chewie was'nt the issue the issue was leia, and afraid to perhaps dissrupt her emotion , so then vader's study would simply be demoblized, he chose to ..if you like keep the situation sweet by pairing them off instead of killin one of them..and causing rippiles along force barrier which he had'nt infact felt in years ofr since luke destroyed the death star!!

  • well Gorge lucas explained this theroy him self, saying that vader was full aware that the jedi had been eradicated, however when vader felt ''force emotion'' this clearly indicated that all the jedi had been destroyed, and powerful ''jedi emotion aswell'' thats why he changed his plan to leave leia and chewie in cloud city, then changed his ming to them being taken to his ship to study,

  • @dabrixtonbomba Ah. Well, although that theory works, I don't think it enforces character development as well as the one I interpreted. To really find out, we'd need to ask Irvin Kershner on that decision to save Chewbacca.

  • Poor continuity editing. Han is just wearing a white shirt, no waistcoat, when the close up shot of him replying at 26 seconds in comes he has his black waistcoat on. When it cuts back to the distance shot it's gone again

  • omg i luv han solo!

  • lois- i love you

    peter- Fuck off

    lol

  • "i love you"

    "I know"

Hahahaha! Back in the day where such cruddy writing could be forgiven!!!

  • Great scene. The "I know" ad lib reminds me of the shooting of the Cairo swordsman in 'Raiders.' Both were last minute changes that were brilliant.

Has anyone ever explained why Vader wants to freeze Luke anyway? What's wrong with just taking him captive the usual way?

  • @jksonny Yes, i most definitely it's EPIC. Without it, imagine the lack of cheese in the many films of today..

All I'm saying is, it's funny how tolerable such lines were back then. Apply that line in a movie this year and see it get flamed by MILLIONS of critics and writing enthusiasts...

  • Blooper

    - When being frozen, Han Solo is wearing a dark jacket

    - When thawed, he is wearing a white shirt

  • What's with all the negative comments? Han Solo was great!

  • I know :p

  • 0:18

(stormtrooper's mind) alright enough of this smoochy buisness. you got an apointment with the carbon freeze NOW!

  • The "I know" was an ad lib on the last take.

  • Best, most honest and poignant reply to "I love you." I know.

  • Chewie like to scream a lot...

  • he shuda died afterwards it wouldve been good. i was dissappointed when i heard he was alive

  • i forgot if he comes back to life or not

  • Turns out he's been a ghost all along.

  • anyone notice his vest is still on ??? in this scene

  • I think he eats it just before being frozen. That would also explain how he comes out of carbon freeze two stone heavier.

  • @kendofiend Omg, no never! What a mistake xD

  • This scene is still just as heartbreaking and bone chilling as the first time I saw it when I was three.

  • Very emotional scene! Gives me chills!! I love Star Wars!!!

  • why did he freeze himself

  • He didn't. Vader was testing it on Han to freeze Luke.

  • why did vader want to freeze his own son

  • Because Vader is a bastard!! lol

  • 1:03 = perhaps the most awesome, terrifying feature of the imperial march

  • at 0:45

  • Most of the scene, just wearing a white shirt. when he says "I know", white shirt and black vest!

  • It's the force

  • Thanks for posting!

  • "I love you...."

    "Fuck off."

I laughed so hard at that scene and the frozen figure of peter mooning in carbonite xD

  • lol Peter

  • I love you...

    I know....

    WHAT A FUCKING PIMP!

  • @NuclearMisfit 1+ that is a Mack/Playa/Pimp move.

  • @NuclearMisfit Peter as Han: "Fuck off" HAHAHA

  • @NuclearMisfit and the behind-the-scenes story regarding that line is just hilarious.

  • I like Luke, Leia, Han Solo.... and of course, Darth Vader

  • Anakin is darth vader

  • I know... but i prefer Anakin when he turned into Darth Vader

  • Haha, I remember watching it as a little kid and having many nightmares about it. Go little me.

  • you not the only one

  • Epic moments. We live for these movie moments...

  • It's all yours, bounty hunter!!!

  • name of the music track from the soundtrack please.

  • So that's why Harrison Ford always looked so young for his age in all of his movies. The carbon freezing chamber stopped and preserved his aging!!! Ok...bad joke....

  • the reason why vader stopped boba from blasting leia and chewie is because he felt the force through l;eia, now luke and leia were born jedi' however leia's force ability lay dorment until she in some way started using them, by han solo being placed into carbon freeze this hightened her emotion...now vader had believed for long time that he had wiped the last of the jedi out, and when a jedi uses emotion it is easily picked up by another or sith, thats why they have eye lock when it happens

  • @dabrixtonbomba Sorry, but that sounds like some tacky expanded universe explanation. I think the real reason is to show that Vader's character has a heart - as he gets closer to Luke, Vader stops wasting lives like he was earlier in the film. This later becomes extremely obvious when he spares one of the commander's lives at the end (Needa?) after Luke, Leia, etc. escape.

  • well that was George lucas explanation on the early skywalker bond forming within the old trilogy, thats why he obviously changed his mind from leia and chewie staying within cloud city to them being taken to his ship, remember at this time the jedi had been eradicated, to to feel ''force'' emotion the way he did from leia would've been big shock, because as far as he was concerned luke was the last reminice remanence of the jedi,

  • Man, this just establishes Han as the anti-hero outlaw with a good heart. Note how he talks to Chewie with love, in all seriousness, it evokes the frames of a man talking to a dog he really loves. Han FOREVER!

  • Great scene. One thing I've wondered since seeing it initially as a kid. Why does Vadar stop the Storm Trooper from blasting Chewie? Very cool of him to do.

  • Vader stopped Boba Fett (not a Stormtrooper) from blasting 3PO. He still remembers the droid that he built as child on Tattooine.

  • You're right, it was Boba Fett whose blaster he diverted (I'm going on memory and must have fused the prototype with production). However, I'm not quite sure if I buy your explanation that Vadar stops Boba Fett to save C-3PO from collateral damage. I highly doubt Lucas had this all put together and more than likely contrived certain story lines (such as Anikan creating 3PO). Nonetheless, great answer as I didn't even think of that. Still don't buy it, though.

  • That's fine. Still, I don't think that there's a better explanation -- or any other explanation for Vader forcing Boba Fett to lower his weapon. I know he still needed Han alive to be tested in the Carbon Freezing Chamber, but he didn't have any necessary concern for Chewbacca or Leia. I still think the only reason for Vader lowering Boba's weapon was because Boba would have risked hitting 3PO and Vader didn't want that.

  • I'll grant that, possibly, that was the reason they had Ani build 3PO but there was no way Lucas had that in mind in 1980. The only thing I can think of was that it was foreshadowing in order to demonstrate that there was still good in him and that Luke's impending presence was the impetus. I still don't like how he refers to Han as some poor man's Luke who can be used as an experiment. No matter what, GREAT SCENE!

  • No doubt about it, Jack. Also, I agree with your on the pre-prequel explanation. In Episode IV, Darth Vader was at the peek of being evil, but as soon as he found out he had a son he started acting good again little by little.

So the Pre-prequel explanation would be the it was to foreshadow the good that still existed in Vader, and knowing that Luke was his son was the source of it. And the Post-Prequel explanation could be that Vader still remembers 3PO.

  • Thanks for your replies startanica and dabrixtonbomba. If anybody knows of a place to discuss the complex relationship between Han Solo and Obi-Wan lemme know. That's the one I've always been fascinated in and I've also noticed common themes among Borimir and Gandalf. Perhaps I'm projecting but I'm usually still right.

  • Why wouldn't Vader have concern for Leia? I think in those first moments here maybe he recognizes that Leia is his daughter, or at least that she resembles her mother, which is why he stares at her and she gets creeped out at 0:02. He would definitely have concern for her if this is a moment of recognition, and it would foreshadow the way in which he stops the emperor to save Luke's life later...

  • Vader couldn't have recognized that Leia was his daughter because he didn't know that Padme was carrying twins. As far as he knew, she was pregnant with only one child, and he knew that Luke was his son. Also, Leia served as a senator for the Empire until Vader learned of her alliance to the Rebellion and labeled her a traitor.

  • @startanica

Either that or the Leia being Luke's sister thing was a ret-con and the writers hadn't come up with it yet by the time of shooting this movie :D

  • I've always wondered that too!

  • goddamn. one of the best scenes of all time.

  • 0:23

    "i love you!"

    "i know"

    xDDDD

  • no jacket, jacket, no jacket

  • "I love you" "I know"

What kind of answer is that :P say you love her back Han!!

  • When neither Ford nor director Irvin Kershner were happy with Solo's scripted "I love you, too" response to Leia's declaration of love in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Kershner prompted Ford to draw upon his familiarity with Solo to improvise. Kershner agreed that Ford's line -- "I know" -- was exactly what Solo would say.

  • Yeah, I mean look at how he thinks Leia has the hots for him throughout the whole movie. Han just realized she was too uptight to tell him ;)

  • @rangerlogin yea thanks ......for that useless input

  • Its HIS answer.

Even in the face of death, he refused to back down from being cool.

  • @Cfffx

At the time Harrison Ford wasn't sure he would come back for Return of the Jedi or not (I.E. die as a result of the carbon freezing between the films), they changed the line. The original line was something less awesome, something like "And don't you forget Princess, because I will be back." They changed it to "I know" because it fit the "Will Han be back?" thing as well as fit the awesomeness that is Han Solo.

  • @Cfffx think he said it because she knows he loves her too.

  • The most evil looking Vader shot EVER at 1:00.

  • lando is a trader!Poor Leia that stinks to watch han solo be frozen! But lol-

Princess Leia-"I love you" Han solo-"I know"This is my favorite episode of star wars i also like the third episode because of the ending battle when anakin becomes DARTH VADER! and can someone tell me what episode this is??

  • this is episode V

  • the little took cuffs off of him

  • why lando why?

  • or maybe the cuffs were made from carbonite and disolved into the mould in the freezing proccess

  • i love it how when he's put down, his wrist were shackled, when he comes out - no sign of any damn cuffs, fool was about to break loose.

  • You weren't paying attention. Just before he goes in, the Ughnaughts take the cuffs off him.

  • i so want to say that

    i love u

    i know badass
