Noticed a blooper in this scene: when Han was placed into center and when he was dropping, he was wearing all white. However, when he said "I know" and looked at Leia and then looked downwards, he was wearing a black shirt over the white.
Han being lowered down is one of the finest scenes in cinematic history. Everything plays so well together - the performances are all on stunning form, but it's the soundtrack that works so well for me - the sound effects of machinery, the heart punching music, and Chewbacca's roar! It all works so well you can't take your eyes off what's happening.
Darth Vader should be giving Han a medal in this part because according to the deleted scene on the Phantom Menace he too had a problem with Greedo and what did Han do? That Stone cold pimp kept his pimp hand strong and ghetto blasted that punk bitch first. Style points for shooting him from underneath the table. Because thats how he rolls.
Anyone notice that Hans arms were restrained when they put him in but after he was frozen his hands were up in a position that would not be possible with the restraints on them where they were at?
@crazykipspsychoward The Ugnaughts (those little guys) removed Han's handcuffs just before he was lowered into the freezing chamber.
And the reason his hands were in that position. Well, that was Irvin Kershner's idea after he saw the original "frozen Han" prop, which showed Han's arms at his side, like he was at rest. Kersh had it changed to the position you see in the final film, saying that Han would be "fighting to the end."
@Tubewings Actually, I thought that also. It looks like that's what they are doing, but if you look close after they move away, you can still see them on his hands. and when he is being lowered.
anyone notice that when you are watching this on dvd or on tape that hans looks like james from Big Time Rush? also C3P0's right leg is silver while the rest of him is gold. what up wit dat?
I remember when I first watched this movie when I was a little kid I got really sad because I thought Han Solo died, btw Han Solo is the freaking best star wars character of all time.
Hey....is it just me..or is this video a little higher pitched then the movie? I just noticed that! I played back and listened to it, and I'm like, "Hey wait a minute. Leia's voice isn't that high!!!!" Hey I should know; episode 5 is my favorite ^_^.
chewie was'nt the issue the issue was leia, and afraid to perhaps dissrupt her emotion , so then vader's study would simply be demoblized, he chose to ..if you like keep the situation sweet by pairing them off instead of killin one of them..and causing rippiles along force barrier which he had'nt infact felt in years ofr since luke destroyed the death star!!
well Gorge lucas explained this theroy him self, saying that vader was full aware that the jedi had been eradicated, however when vader felt ''force emotion'' this clearly indicated that all the jedi had been destroyed, and powerful ''jedi emotion aswell'' thats why he changed his plan to leave leia and chewie in cloud city, then changed his ming to them being taken to his ship to study,
@dabrixtonbomba Ah. Well, although that theory works, I don't think it enforces character development as well as the one I interpreted. To really find out, we'd need to ask Irvin Kershner on that decision to save Chewbacca.
Poor continuity editing. Ford is wearing a white shirt without the trademark black waistcoat. hen the close up shot comes at 26 seconds in he's gt the waistcoat on. When it returns to the distance shot it's gone again.
Poor continuity editing. Han is just wearing a white shirt, no waistcoat, when the close up shot of him replying at 26 seconds in comes he has his black waistcoat on. When it cuts back to the distance shot it's gone again
@jksonny Yes, i most definitely it's EPIC. Without it, imagine the lack of cheese in the many films of today..
All I'm saying is, it's funny how tolerable such lines were back then. Apply that line in a movie this year and see it get flamed by MILLIONS of critics and writing enthusiasts...
So that's why Harrison Ford always looked so young for his age in all of his movies. The carbon freezing chamber stopped and preserved his aging!!! Ok...bad joke....

Man, this just establishes Han as the anti-hero outlaw with a good heart. Note how he talks to Chewie with love, in all seriousness, it evokes the frames of a man talking to a dog he really loves. Han FOREVER!
Great scene. One thing I've wondered since seeing it initially as a kid. Why does Vadar stop the Storm Trooper from blasting Chewie? Very cool of him to do.
You're right, it was Boba Fett whose blaster he diverted (I'm going on memory and must have fused the prototype with production). However, I'm not quite sure if I buy your explanation that Vadar stops Boba Fett to save C-3PO from collateral damage. I highly doubt Lucas had this all put together and more than likely contrived certain story lines (such as Anikan creating 3PO). Nonetheless, great answer as I didn't even think of that. Still don't buy it, though.
That's fine. Still, I don't think that there's a better explanation -- or any other explanation for Vader forcing Boba Fett to lower his weapon. I know he still needed Han alive to be tested in the Carbon Freezing Chamber, but he didn't have any necessary concern for Chewbacca or Leia. I still think the only reason for Vader lowering Boba's weapon was because Boba would have risked hitting 3PO and Vader didn't want that.
I'll grant that, possibly, that was the reason they had Ani build 3PO but there was no way Lucas had that in mind in 1980. The only thing I can think of was that it was foreshadowing in order to demonstrate that there was still good in him and that Luke's impending presence was the impetus. I still don't like how he refers to Han as some poor man's Luke who can be used as an experiment. No matter what, GREAT SCENE!
No doubt about it, Jack. Also, I agree with your on the pre-prequel explanation. In Episode IV, Darth Vader was at the peek of being evil, but as soon as he found out he had a son he started acting good again little by little.
So the Pre-prequel explanation would be the it was to foreshadow the good that still existed in Vader, and knowing that Luke was his son was the source of it. And the Post-Prequel explanation could be that Vader still remembers 3PO.
Thanks for your replies startanica and dabrixtonbomba. If anybody knows of a place to discuss the complex relationship between Han Solo and Obi-Wan lemme know. That's the one I've always been fascinated in and I've also noticed common themes among Borimir and Gandalf. Perhaps I'm projecting but I'm usually still right.
Why wouldn't Vader have concern for Leia? I think in those first moments here maybe he recognizes that Leia is his daughter, or at least that she resembles her mother, which is why he stares at her and she gets creeped out at 0:02. He would definitely have concern for her if this is a moment of recognition, and it would foreshadow the way in which he stops the emperor to save Luke's life later...
Vader couldn't have recognized that Leia was his daughter because he didn't know that Padme was carrying twins. As far as he knew, she was pregnant with only one child, and he knew that Luke was his son. Also, Leia served as a senator for the Empire until Vader learned of her alliance to the Rebellion and labeled her a traitor.
When neither Ford nor director Irvin Kershner were happy with Solo's scripted "I love you, too" response to Leia's declaration of love in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Kershner prompted Ford to draw upon his familiarity with Solo to improvise. Kershner agreed that Ford's line -- "I know" -- was exactly what Solo would say.
At the time Harrison Ford wasn't sure he would come back for Return of the Jedi or not (I.E. die as a result of the carbon freezing between the films), they changed the line. The original line was something less awesome, something like "And don't you forget Princess, because I will be back." They changed it to "I know" because it fit the "Will Han be back?" thing as well as fit the awesomeness that is Han Solo.
lando is a trader!Poor Leia that stinks to watch han solo be frozen! But lol-
Princess Leia-"I love you" Han solo-"I know"This is my favorite episode of star wars i also like the third episode because of the ending battle when anakin becomes DARTH VADER! and can someone tell me what episode this is??

@startanica
Either that or the Leia being Luke's sister thing was a ret-con and the writers hadn't come up with it yet by the time of shooting this movie :D

"I love you" "I know"
What kind of answer is that :P say you love her back Han!!
Cfffx 2 years ago
When neither Ford nor director Irvin Kershner were happy with Solo's scripted "I love you, too" response to Leia's declaration of love in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Kershner prompted Ford to draw upon his familiarity with Solo to improvise. Kershner agreed that Ford's line -- "I know" -- was exactly what Solo would say.

Yeah, I mean look at how he thinks Leia has the hots for him throughout the whole movie. Han just realized she was too uptight to tell him ;)

Even in the face of death, he refused to back down from being cool.

@Cfffx

@Cfffx think he said it because she knows he loves her too.
