I wish Ralph didn't get injured the Rockets would have won the title in '87 T.T and probably even after that too. Such a shame the franchise had a bad history with injuries also with Yao and Tmac and before then Rudy T.
@GuruOfGreatness not only the injuries..I I remember very well ralph sampson totally unable to play after the fight with jerry sichting in the 86 nba finals..the following season he played with no intensity, and with arrogance..too cocky, actually..but the spell was broken, and since then he never was the same player again..
@Ariamaluum OMG..ralph sampson, he had the opportunity to be a star, and so he was for a period..all star, best rookie (as far as I can remember)..sichting was a good player but nothing more..sampson was a star, sichting one of the crew..a star..a supernova, actually..
@515sbest Seriously, I'll give Ralph his props.Had some amazing talent and skill. But in looking back, he just had some deficienties in his game. One day, I'm going to check out his son at ECU to see if he has some of his father's game.
If only Ralph Sampson didn't get those injuries. He woulda probably got those two championships. When they paired him with Olajuwon they had to have had the tallest frontcourt ever. That definitly woulda worked in todays NBA because size is everything, especially in the playoffs.
@515sbest You're in denial.Your boy failed at the highest level.Deal with it.IF Bowie never got injured for the final 2 years, Ralph may not have won those awards.YOu know this.Keep smoking the wacky weed.
He carried UVA to the top of the polls for 4 years . He's not allowed 2 miss crucial shots .. Ewing carried the Knicks for years but Starks was the man against Jordan . Ralph didn't get help @ UVA. So whatsup with that. At Houston .. Him & Akeem would have ruled forever if he didn't get injured. Now What.
@ Belburg. Ur crazy .. Ralph was Naismith player of the year 3 fuckin times. Not Bowie , Akeem , Ewing, Gilmore,, Ralph was. Also Ralph won the John Wooden award twice. If U know bBall .. U would know Suckers & Scrubs cant win those awards. Now What. As far as college if Orthell wilson was passing the ball more back @ UVA Ralph would of had better stats. His point guard was turning the ball over while Ralph was in the paint posting up. Now what.
@515sbest The man couldn't even average 20 ppg during his college career. He often choked in big games. He definitley wasn't as dominant as many have made him to be.U are the one that doesn't know shit.
Ralph was lucky, despite his talent.Bowie would've given him fits had the injuries not taken place when they did. However, give him props for taking a mid-level team to national prominence.
Ralph Sampson was a beast in college; and an intimidating low post presence. Wished his NBA career wasn't hampered by injury, definitely could have been among the all-time greats.
He was definitely a great talent, but in college, was inconsistent and often disappeared in big games.Luckily for him, he didn't have to play Bowie, or may have been exposed.
Dumb statement. The only reason the Rockets won anything is because Jordan was trying to play baseball. Get real, if Jordan didn't retire they win 8 in a row.
lol@kaine969 ....Jordan could not bully us Rockets and got his ass whupped by a team that the Rockets swept in 95. Dont try and use the lame excuse that he was out of shape and rusty when he averaged his career playoff numbers and still lost to Orlando. Jordan retired with a career losing record to the Rockets and got swatted by Hakeem more times than any other Center he ever faced.
@FuShengAlex Hey idiot, Jordan was out of the league for a year and returned for the last 20 games of the season and then the playoffs. You're dumb....bye.
Everytime the shotclock malfunctioned, they should have just had Sampson jump up there and give it a good wack. Any normal guy would need like a 7 foot ladder to do that, but not Sampson.
what bunch of morrons. RALF SAMSON is the best in that time together with hakeem. sam bowie would kiss ralfs ass in the air . what ?? CHAMBERLAIN hahaha another nutcase chamblain was the only big guy in he's time do you think he can do that now?? stupidshits
I doubt this. Ralph was a good player. But two things that Ralph had going against him. Trying to play power forward against men much bigger than him in weight and his bad attitude. Ralph ruled in college.
Al McGuire was great. I recall him saying the reason Sampson didn't get close to the level of Kareem of Wilt is that he grew up in a town where kids get in their cars and drive around in circles. But Bird and West came from small towns so maybe it had to do with being black and coming from a small town.
Al had a theory called Cracked Sidewalks. In many poor and distressed urban areas, many of the streets and sidewalks are not properly maintained. Al always thought that anyone who came from this type of poor, tough background, or neighborhood with a cracked sidewalk, would make a great recruit.
....and to reply (one year later): Sampson did not come from a "cracked sidewalk" environment, so that's why, plus due to his knees, he didn't become Wilt and Kareem. Bird and West may not have had cracked sidewalks, but they were from very tough rural farming and mining towns respectively.

@jonesthecat00. That was true with Sicthing. But both lived off other players, Ralph with Hakeem and Jerry with Larry.

@jonesthecat00. I disagree. Sampson had height but not that charisma. Sichting was a WNBA player like Sue Bird, a total bitch.

I don't really think that Jordan lost any sleep having a losing record against Houston, his championship rings put him to sleep

Maybe not the first man touch the top of the backboard, but perhaps the first man to hang from the top of the backboard with two hands :)

They played against each other before. Irony of this is that they both went out due to bad knees.
