  • I agree that the overall pace is hurried....... the opening bars are not at all musical..... he must have been in a hurry to get for a date.............

Rubinstein and Zimerman do an awesome job on this piece........ Richter's is perhaps to explosive but is surely wonderful

  • lol he makes this sounds like the transcendental etudes

  • He TRULY hates Chopin's music, doesn't he ?

  • What's wrong with you all? This is a fine performance. Not my favorite one, but he ABSOLUTELY doesn't rush it - it's a normal tempo, sometimes really slower than other great interpretations. And it has a beautiful tone. At 8:00 the scales and arpeggios passage doesn't have so much nuances (the following chords passage has), but it is exciting, it is a matter of choice. You don't have to praise this performance, but I absolutely don't think it's bad.

  • i tried to like the performance because he is B.B, but i could not. he seems he doesn't want to play the piece there, especially the sloppy scales and chords after 8:00 to 9:00. it looks he needs a masterclass on that piece

  • This is truly a disaster. He's got to give it up. Compare with the peerless Bunin.

  • Too much pedal - too much banging - too fast and not melodic enough - where is the harmony? He was better pianist before.

  • In an interview (here on YT) he stated he hates Chopin.

Well... you can see some of this in his playing here.

  • @Elicgt

BB was joking when he said he 'hated' Chopin!

  • Berezovsky simply rushes through over half of this piece. This piece isn't a race or a show off piece, there is an incredible amount of depth in it. Plenty of polyphony and complex harmonies that can't be blurred over by going too fast. The pianist has relax and enjoy it!

The performance is quite crisp, but the interpretation is shallow in many way.

  • @ETermplor absolutely correct , compare it with the performances of lugansk or pollini than you can feel what is a correct interpretation - beresowsky is wunderfull for medtner or ohter russions butnot for chopin , at least for me

  • @ETermplor It's not my favorite interpretation (that would be still RubinStein), however he doesn't rush here. I've seen much faster tempi (Richter) and much slower ones. Berezovsky will always be more "muscular". Nothing is blurred here, I''ve seen much muddier inpretations (Helene Tysman e.g.). I prefere this to weak and "salon"-esque performances.

  • Bravo!

  • Aww, his rubato is wayy too much, but I don't know whether its good or bad. I just like the way he played it, because he simply feel his music.

  • his rubato is a bit showy. and i missed hearing some concentration to the piece's counterpoint. otherwise, it's well paced and played. I really don't think he was entirely into playing this piece. i'd like to hear him recording this again 10 years from now and see how it sounds then.

  • The purpose of a comment is to enlighten or to offer a different point of view. I normally would give my long critic of his playing but in this case this pianist is so woefully inadequate in so many areas, it is not worth my time. In sumary, his playing is "painful to listen."

  • @freeqwerqwer Well said, Mr. Collins!

  • So controlled passion, possibly the result of a mature insight into this piece, is not to freqwerqwer's taste? Fine. But please not "I can tell that his mind is not mature enough..." :) Maybe he has gone through a young Richter stage and come out the other side.

  • I don't see his performance as immaturity, but as power and rigidness, which is a breath of fresh air on this piece, to me. :)

  • I have to agree with freeqwerqwer, I just don't think he's 100% into this piece. This masterpiece demands passion and Berezovsky, although a great pianist, just doesn't seem to play it with any.

  • I can tell that his mind is not mature enough to play this piece.

  • @freeqwerqwer lets see how you can do... he's just not playing it in the way you want him to

  • @freeqwerqwer , this comment of yours is both extremely stupid and - well - immature. Because you're unable to realize it's your TASTE he's not catering to - so what!?! Switch channels and don't pester this page with self-important nonsense

  • Listening past the first 30 seconds is enough to stop this & forget for ever, sorry (I mean this guy's playing and Chopin's masterpiece, of course)

  • piopare nice comment
