Had not heard this in several decades, what a beautiful song! And he was about 18 years old when he recorded it, or even younger. He could do jazz style, folk style, rock style (with Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck on his records), the guy was great. He truly faded from view sometime in the 1970's, so it good to hear this again. Thanks.
aaah, love this song. on a year out in berlin at the moment and the sun is shiiiining, but this song makes me miss london SO much! this a waterloo sunset by the kinks make me so nostalgic...
I appreciate this. My reaction was similar to baracine's: I thought of of the Judy Collins cover on Colors of the Day, which really differs from Donovan's Eleanor-Rigby-meets-Dylanesque-phantasmagoria-meets-cooljazz version. The darkness of Donovan's arrangement seems more appropriate to "violent hash-smoker" and other beatnik images than Collins's circus-y arrangement.
brilliant song,..i dont give a shit theres no vid,cos its such an ace song...all these complaining about the lack of video must be the violent hash smokers he speaks of.they should go and shake a chocolate machine, get involved in an eating scene
It's amazing that people like Judy Collins saw the possibilities of this song from this version. I mean it's all there but it's so jazzy-mysterious-underground-beatnik-fifties- grotty and Judy Collins made such a colourful psychedelic production out of it.
Now how do you like that? I always thought Donovan generally and this song particularly were like a bridge, musically, between hipster and hippie days. I wonder if he had any interaction with Kerouac, Ginsberg, et. al.(?)

There is a video and it's beautiful. Shot with Donovan walking around in a frilly shirt....shot in B & W. See the Donovan Documentary.

Thanks! Didn't know about the Documentary. I'll check it out.
What's happening with Donovan nowadays? Hope he's well. One of God's experiments :)
