I think he's using pressure and release to teach the horse how to turn his head without having to pull hard on the reins. Then you progress to using legs and reins to actually make the horse move its whole body. Just reins -turn head only. Reins and leg pressure means turn whole body. Horse learns to be soft and easy to control that way. That's always been how i've trained them and that's my guess on what he's doing.
Thanks for the comment that frightened large TB's can be explosive. Almost got trampled by my tank-sized)broodmare changing pastures. She cannot handle loosing site of her pasture mates under any circumstances and looses all rationality. I had to be "rescued" before she used me as a door mat. No harm done other than my bruised pride, so your comment was reassuring and greatly appreciated. Glad that I picked this one to watch again. Always something new to take with me. Thanks.
Thanks to you and your team Paul. Your vids are very instructional and entertaining. My learning curve seems to be in an ever increasing spike, thanks for your insight and inspiration. Wish I could find the velcro butt I had before I had the kids though. I'm still looking!! Honestly, cheers for your vids. Let us know if you are coming home for a visit as I have a pony that needs to meet you and am happy to drive as far as it takes!!
Just watched this again: as said before, I'm not from racing, so don't know what the training regime is, so.. do these youngsters exercise on horse walkers & or tread mills? Asking'cos this one in particular seems so well developed & carrying superb condition for a 2yo? (Brilliant Bowie "count-down" timing by the way! lol lol.) I haven't seen such "good hands" as yours for years by the way. A rare treat indeed. Thanks.
No, these horses come straight from running around in the paddock with their mates. Some of the bigger farms might have them on horse walkers but not many..
hey endo, I was wondering, what do you think is the most important thing to remember when working with horses like this, especially young horses? and how do you know which note is a good note to end on for both you and the horse?
I've watched it again! This is the best yet. Listening to your insight and reasoning during the video is so helpful. Your logic and compassion for the horse really comes through. I don't remember why you said you couldn't speak the whole time and why you had to speed up the videos but please please talk to us in Part A....This one is perfect!!!
lol lol lol 'tho, as some parts brought back memories for me of some er, erm "interesting situations!" I don't half envy your stickability. Does anything EVER put you on the deck? Beautifully put together colt too. Thanks again.
Paul , another great vid , I have watched it at least 5 times and this horse sure tried to get you a step behind. He was harder than what the vid shows , this proves how great a rider you are and how you out smart his guy. Thanks for sharing your horsemanship with us.
I've watched 2 more times. He is beautiful!!He does kinda remind me of Denko. He looks like he may not like you just jumping on up there either. Save that for the next vid...Thank you again.
If I didn't have the haft-tap, I'd be still trying to get on him. My 2 staff wouldn't hold him. Taking off forward is this horse's thing and he's just way too strong for us Mr Puniverse jockey types..
You totally amaze me. I love when you talk us through the video. Just out of curiousity, have you ever had one you couldn't tame? I agree with filly4billy, your cool as a cucumber. Always in control, and nice about it. Like you said, just waiting for the next trick.
Thanks for sharing with us what you do so well. Great job!!! OH, another question. Are any other trainers or colt starters at the training center using the "tap"? Thanks again.
No horse can beat the TAP so there's no reason to get fazed, you just keep taking it to the next level until you have compliance.
No one uses the TAP here because very few have seen it. "Endospink" is an internet entity. Around here they see me ride outside at the training center, not what I do in an areena.
Well Master Paul-san... If I worked at the Training Center and watched you just ride outside I'd be intrigued. I'd introduce myself and ask if I could watch what you DO in the arena. There's a certain magic in watching you ride. It's TRUE!
That's why there's a shortage of riders worldwide Julz. Somewhere along the line people stopped asking questions. Out of every 200 or so young riders I see, only 1 will reach elite status if that. Once all the good riders are gone they will be no one to learn from. Pat his part to blame for keeping half the equine world on the ground.
You have that certain confidence in your approach and the way you handle horses. For a Mr Puniverse contender you do all right. LOL!
It does take a certain amount of courage (for lack of a better word) to start colts, not every one wants/can do it. But lets not get STUCK on the ground. Sooner or later you or some one has got to step up there.
Let's slap Pat upside his head for discouraging the willing and telling them to stay grounded with more games instead. :~)
Funny Jj... It was Paul's RIDING that got me right out of the gate. Watching him take those race bred colts and ride them like REAL horses. Left and right, snakies thru the trees and around the bushes, out in the fields to see the horizon. Making them PARTNERS.
Then I saw 'Cheeky' and came to appreciate all that the TAP could do to change a horses attitude.
The 1st vid I ever watched on YT was Paul riding a TB just out and about and I thought, "Who is this guy? This is EXCEPTIONAL on a TB!"
That is funny, Julz! The TAP on the Deception horse was the fist one I saw when I looked for a colt starting video. I must have watched it 100 times in a row, mesmerized... had never seen anything quite like that. Then I started watching the other videos trying to find out more and was sucked in by the fantastic riding.
Now, don't go getting too big a cranium, Paul... but it's true. (-;
Very nice. I like the way you train. He reminds me of my five year old that needs a lot of work. He gets explosive at times. He needs work. I did find someone to help me with him.
He has got so much better but i don't want to get into something that I won't be able to finish. Very nice video. I think he has matured mentally too which helps. but he needs someone that is firmer. Great job on the video. can't wait for the next one.
Don't really have a 'thing' for chestnuts but you get some beauties! Are these horses coming from the same breeder? Same sire/dam maybe? WOW! If so they're on to something there. NICE horses!
Great vid & voice over with your thoughts. Seemed like this colt was experimenting more than being naughty, just testing to see where he could go. Didn't really look to be grabbing himself just not so sure about that guy on his back. LOL! You are so calm and confident... you LOVE this job I can tell. :~)
Different farms and breeding Julz. I must be a chestnut magnet..lol
He put up a bit of a fight in Part A which shows you the TAP's power and legacy. Watching his movement here shows you the TAP is completely harmless. No broken spirits, no aggression, no abuse..just one very handy tool for trainers to upgrade their existing toolboxes.
If your *magnetic chestnuts* run as good as they look they're in business. We'd call them 'growthy colts'. Amazing they're so young, stout & solid looking, like TB's of old. Great to see that in race horses today. YAY!
Wish I would have had the TAP down to show RW this summer. Bummer! There's all ways next year, he's a guy that will appreciate it, much more so in person than he would by watching a video. :~)
Wauw, he's a stunner! And a nice mover too... Looks a bit like the Deception horse, actually. Always a bit of action in them chestnuts, huh? ...lol - Oh, and good job, Mr Paul! But hadn't expected anything else of you, he he... Thank you!
Why do you move the horse's head from side to side once you get on? Is it to get them a little more supple, or is it part of the TAP?

Good riding and nice dressage prospect there. Hope he gets a new career after running, unless he become a good runner.

It makes one´s flesh crawl, instructive and enjoyable as most of your videos, and the perfect music choice you alway do.
How do you find the balance between reining and letting go?
Have you ever heard of Philippe Karl and his École de Légèreté? What do you think about it?
