  • great review

    =

i liked the pic of cat at end thought was cool

  • I’m sippin on my chimay red right now. It’s fruity (peach) and really fresh. Youre right it’s a little bit sour. I finished a bottle of chimay blue before and that one is not that good. It tastes like a mix of yeast, caramel and a flowernote. Cheers from Belgium

  • Excellent my man! Def. enjoying a smaller bottle, but have had the corked one before. Glad you're made the distinction! Great review!

  • jus back frm belgium myself fell in love with the beers , and the women lol

  • superb!

  • question! can you re-seal the bottle for later the big bottle. cuz i just bought one yesterday and thats all my beer store had, and i honestly dont want to drink the whole thing right away. btw good review, looking forward to my chimay red.

  • @gundambob646 Well, I don't think it would be much good re-corked. Just invite a friend round and drink it all in one sitting. Cheers!

  • @ZakAvery just opened it! thanks for the video its very good and it went BANG!! when i opened it hahha. keep up the channel.

  • @gundambob646 kaboom! how did it taste?

  • @ZakAvery it was a cross between wine and beer. with the fruit taste you were talking about. i would have to say its 1 of my top favorite imported beers.

  • i'm live in chimay !! ^^

  • one of my favorite belgium beers

  • Okay,so I noticed one of my old channel's I don't use anymore I replyed with a few video'sand some comment's. Well I guess 5 month's back i found the big corked version and tryed it. Today I found a small caped version 2 try out and will make a review video when I do. I could of got a small caped bottle of the white but it was like $2-$4 more so i pased. Month's back I rember hearing that the corck version is different from the cap. still wanna try there chese and can't find. cheers!

  • I really like this beer.

Wine goblets work, as do brandy sifters. The idea is to get you face down in it. Let it breathe.

Also it is high alcohol. So the brandy sifter or chimay goblet allows a good pour. A 750ml corked bottle is for sharing. Or for getting effed up on great beer.

  • "face down in it" - nice phrase!

  • Very indepth reviews. I've been writing and blogging for years but I've never considered video blogs, I think I'd probably be abysmal. Anyways, keep up the great work! Time for a Terrapin Brown IPA and Brewdog Paradox. Whoop

  • cuite cat. i found the corp bottle version yestirday and bought it knowing nothing. i am thinking of reviewing it in a video Friday. I hope I like it since the bottle was not cheap. Nice video. Where are you from?

  • It's a great beer, just rember to use a big chalice-type glass, and avoid the sediment. Cheers!

  • sediment? So,kinda like a wine glass? I may not have that type of glass you speak off and if I don't then what and um,what will the glass do? I am not normaly a drink beer out of a glass but was planning on it. Some say it's like red wine this ale, is that true?

  • That's funny the beer could taste different out of the different bottles. I want to get the bigger bottle, but I'm not sure if I want to drink all of that myself.

Speaking of which, did you drink BOTH bottles by yourself after the video? that would put most people a few sheets to the wind.

I just ordered an official Chimay chalic, as soon as it arrives i'm drinking this beer!

  • where are you from"? I found the corp bottle yesturday and bought it. Not cheap. My review video when i try it out may be on Friday cheack it out. I don;t know much about it. Knew nothing when bought it.

  • no thats the right glass. you may be talking about they chimay chalice. ok cool you have it but its just a glass and is no better. alot of belgian breweries make glasses for their beers. its a marketing technique

  • no, that's not apropriate. also, the pouring is incorrect.

  • i need to learn how to pour better. i dont think i do it correctly with some types of beers. wat do you mean by not apropriate?

  • Raphael, you should post some videos demonstrating your great knowledge of beer. It seems like you know an awful lot more than me.

  • If it interests you I have some about making beer. Actually, about yeast culturing. But they are in portuguese.

  • It would be good to see you make some videos about how to pour beer correctly and which glasses to use - this seems to be what you think is most important, so you should share your expertise.

  • @slm6025

It might be a useful marketing technique but it isn't just that. Don't forget that, allow me to be chauvinistic, Belgium has a tremendous beer culture and many of these glasses are designed to get the best and most out of your beer.

The main issue I can immediately detect with these glasses is that they aren't supposed to become more narrow toward the top.

  • This review was excellent. Very enlightening. Thank you.

  • This is straight from the Chimay website, during their descriptions of the three varieties..."you should not forget one essential fact, for it is important to appreciate that a large volume of beer affects the development of taste in the second fermentation of the beer in the bottle and gives it a fuller and smoother character."

  • This is a great idea for a tasting and one we were going to do. Very creative. One question did you account for these beers possibly being made at very different times. I have found age to profoundly change Chimay Red. If they were made at different times that could account for the difference in flavor.

  • You're right that it's important to compare the same vintage, and to be honest, I forget if I checked that they were. But the difference in them is much more than simple age - larger format beers always taste so much better.

  • Can you re-cork the big bottle for storage after opening it?

  • I guess you could, although if you find it a struggly to drink, I'd suggest finding a friend to share it with!

The other thing is that once you open a beer, it starts to oxidise, and there is a danger of bacterial spoilage. With much strogner beers, this isn't a problem (Sam Adams Utopias, for an extreme example), but I'd guess that a large Red is best drunk soon after opening.

  • Regarding the "F1 style spillage", try holding the cork and turning the bottle instead of holding the bottle and turning the cork. That should prevent most of the unpleasant surprices.

BTW, have you tried aging Chimay Red? I know that Blue and Triple age well, but I've heard conflicting stories about Red. Some say it doesn't age well at all and is best consumed fresh, but some others apparently have had some positive results cellaring Red.

  • That's a good question about the cellaring. I guess the answer is "it depends". I can see that as the weakest Chimay, the Red would probably age faster and suffer more than the other two.

I recently tried a 10-year old Blue, and while there was nothing wrong with it, I just didn't care for the way it tasted - very mature and oxidised, like oloroso sherry. I prefer it a bit younger, I think.

  • Wow! Great question! Is there a difference between caps and corks. Wow. I would say that the cork would be better, but not be able to give a real reason why. Your test seems to confirm this. BUT! BUT! BUT! Were these beers the same age? Were these beers stored under the same conditions? These are good questions that must be answered to confirm your thesis.

  • They are good questions, and I have to say that the beers were not the same age, although were shipped and stored in the same way. BUT!, I'm confident the the difference is so big that it can't be down to any of these factors - you should try it yourself and you'll see!

  • i tryed this beer for time back in 1987 in houston tx. usa

it only came in the large bottle with a cork and i loved it so much.

what i really like about it was that if you held up to the light you could see settlement in the bottom of the bottle.

i live in georgia. usa that is, i found it again but there`s no settlement in the bottom anymore why is that?

  • Good question - there shold always be sediment, as it's a live beer, refermented in teh bottle with a little priming yeast. I'd be surprised if it was being filtered for export to the USA (or anywhere).

    Short answer - I don't know, I'm afraid!

  • No, I don't think that they're filtering the beer for the U.S.

  • I love the red,I like to let it sit for a bit and then in a snifter inhale a little bit through the nose as I sip it, wonderful

  • Thanks for your comment. Your right that it is a beer that deserves to be savoured, and a snifter glass is a great way to do that.

  • I smell spices in the bottled version.

  • I think you're absolutely right - it does smell spicy, fruity, and very complex

  • Thank you, I prefer the larger bottle.

    Amazing beer.

  • I think it's much better than the smaller bottling - it seems much more "alive"

  • guess the cap actually might allow the beer to oxidize more... could also be that the beer was bottled from a different batch and there may be slight inconsistencies

  • Thanks for your comment - you could be right about the different batches, although the common wisdom is that corks allow more air into a bottle than a cap. The difference between the two samples is huge!

  • also, you should drink some water or something in between tastings to cleanse your palate (especially with different styles). another thing is that your pour is not entirely a proper one - you produce little, to no head when you are trying the beer. you should aim for "2 fingers" of foam in order to enjoy the beer at its maximum tastiness.

  • Thanks for your comments. It's true that a nice inch of foam helps to concentrate the aroma - I'll try to do that in the future.

  • its definitely a dubbel, there should be no confusion about that. good videos by the way

  • you know what just serve me a cup of chimay and shut up loko.
