I am having a ball with the English version of this game. It's fantasy with actual depth and challenging game play. If, like me, you got bored with Dragon Age after an hour and can't be bothered to play through Oblivion for the umpteenth time (no matter how many mods) I thoroughly recommend giving this a go. The Germans are still making decent games to appeal to people OLDER THAN TWELVE, whereas the rest of the western world has gone downhill.
@TrancoTechnizer It's the mature gamer's RPG, whereas Dragon age is a rip off of Lord of the Rings for kids. Germans have culture and mythology dating back thousands of years, whilst Americans/Canadians don't. That's why Germans can create medieval fantasy off their own backs, while Americans/Canadians have to 'borrow' from English authors (I'm 1/2 English 1/2 American by the way).
@themachinist1000 hmm, if you put it that way, I must aggree with you. I never played Dragonage, my machine cant run it, tho it can run Drakensang at mediocre-minimum....and as its a kinda cheap laptop, I deducted the Drakensang budget wasnt that high as Dragonages. Tho I do aggree with you about the history, background of the germans...and all the games german make are a lot better tham most out there in every aspect... I know cuz i used to play almost only german rpgs,, Gothic1,2,3 for ex,,,
@roboticsun i disagree, the game is NOT a total failure :it's music and art design is VERY NICE. i can only remember few games look prettier.
But...yes you got a point, being soulless actually is a problem. Most germanic games have best looking and best music but usually soulless, i don't know why. maybe the entire culture being suppressed after ww2 and lack of confidence T_T
Can anyone please tell me the difficulty of this game? I heard the combat is really clunky but what exactly does that mean? Is the combat like Fable or like Two Worlds?
@crashpal No, it's far from either of those. It's more like Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age, but with added "clunkiness". It's hard to explain, really, I recommend you try the demo. I know it's somewhere...
Dragon age 2 is a huge failure, but it's still better than this game. this game though gameplay wise is similar to baldur's gate series or NWN2, still it's soulless and no immersion at all. I guess no developer right now can catch the spirit of party-based computer rpg except bioware/obsidian. it's sad obsidian does not have enough funds for their games, and bioware obviously gives up on this genre.
My favorite developers are Piranha Bytes. Looks like I will have to learn the name of Radon Labs too. Finally they made an RPG that isn't dumbed down for idiots! :D
The TRUE purpose of a RPG is to create a living world that you feel that you are apart of. A real world where you can change things, from small to large changes. Where you can create relationships of different kinds with individuals of the world. It's not to clone random Pen and paper/dice RPG from the 80s.
@ronan32 I loved mass effect one and two aswell as Dragon age(the first play through) And I've played the original Buldars gate and own part 2 and I have the Ps2 version, all of which are very different experiences, and after all isn't haveing a different experience what we actualy want out of our games?
The first RPG I played was Baldur's Gate 2, I fell in love with RPG because of it. I've played so many other RPG games after that but it still remains as my #1 RPG game I've ever played.
lol Herbstgespenst a swizz talking about defining roles..Priceless! Sort of like when the swizz defined their role in world war 2 by staying absolutely neutral.
woah she runs like she's got Constipation. and this aint WOW! sigh,,,, games do try to compete with world of warcraft. all epic Fail! wow wins simple as end of
Thanks to Tolkien We're albe to play this games, because he was the best fantasy writer ever. All games are based on his story's: The hobbit, Lord of the rings.
@simfamSP oh you just love sucking that throbbing bioware dick, dont you?
i agree witcher is good though. BUT Geralt of Rivia and the Witcher series have a history of almost 20 years, and that brings me to another reason why DAO is stupid - they stole from Witcher's Lore shamelessly...poor, oppressed elves, fanatical humans with a monotheistic, christianity-like faith, "adult" themes, dark world.... Bleh.
@simfamSP oh, stuff the fanboy crap ffs. Every single Bioware Release since BG2 got crappier because people like you demand more "awsum graphixx!!11", DLC, sex and whatnot. Sorry, i might be a bit serious about this but i really hate DAO and especially its Fanboys. And yeah i played it until the end. Never got the expansion though.
One of the major pro's is the variety of many quirky characters in the game.
The story is is nice and no "Let's save the world"-shit. It's also very well placed in the DSA-Timeline leading over perfectly to the period of the two/three emperors.
The biggest con is, that there are only 5 characters for your party (6 with the addon). It's a hard choice to decide which companion should die at one point...
@Herbstgespenst I like both...dont come insulting bioware ...its made alot of more great games than this company...im not saying drakensang is bad..i like it
@MrHoloSight Bioware STARTED with good games as baldurs gate. But with every bioware release, the rpg elements of their games shrink. In Dragon Age 2 you can't even choose your race anymore, but i'm sure all you bioware fanboys will eat it up anyway ;)
The purpouse of a ROLEPLAYING game is to DEFINE your ROLE.
@Herbstgespenst That's ONE perspective; but the truth is that defining stuff like your race before, did not have much impact on the game at all. It was only in dialogue and visually that it would show. Now other role-playing elements such as choice/consequence have been introduced greatly into Bioware's games - for the best. It's not worse, not better - just different.
The Witcher is one of the greatest RPG's ever, and racial-customization was not part of it. So there.
Sorry, the Wither is crap, even in it's enhanced edition.
Some reasons:
1. So, your fellow Leo died and your castle was attacked... what to do? Of course! F*ck that readhead b*tch... (I quited the game on this part because THIS was too hilarious - and I'm happy I only rent it...)
2. People love the good ol' RPG party - see all the companion mods for classics like Vampire: Bloodlines or Oblivion
@Herbstgespenst Exactly, and they are trying to simplify things to fit wider (RETARD) audiences, which means that they are redefining the RPG genre to something that isn't RPG at all!
I'm really pissed about this, I will miss games like what they use to be...
@Herbstgespenst You have a point.. But even Dragon Age 1 was sort of a 'lite' RPG. that's the way it seemed to me anyway. However, having a preset history/backstory does mean they can make the storyline much more focused, like ME2. It would be awesome if they made a new rpg, based on the old games (SoA, PS:T, etc) though
The purpose of Roleplaying is to PLAY your role, not define it, defining it is only a part of some roleplaying games, D&D is not the definition of RPG. Bioware has the best story-telling on the game market, and they try to make it so that you can change your surrounding and evolve in the relations with your companions. This is RPG, not picking from several races.
@Herbstgespenst Defining your role isnt always as shallow as picking your race (Deus ex), you can call people fanboys but you are just a cynic, no matter which way you try to argue yourself out of it mate.
@Herbstgespenst I agree totally and have been flamed constantly for saying it for the past 3 years. Thank god for the smaller European developers that in the space of time got Fallout 3, Dragon Age and Fallout New Vegas, gave us, Risen, Gothic 4, Two Worlds, Drakensang and Drakensang The River of Time, the Two Worlds series, the Sacred series, Silverfall, Spellforce, The Witcher series and the Divinity series,. etc.
@Herbstgespenst not being able to choose your race is NO REASON AT ALL to hate on the game. it's a tiny detail that i personally never cared about. you define your role as whatever race you are, whether you can choose the race or not. i agree with the shrinking of RPG elements though. Mas Effect 2 was a joke in that aspect. i am no fanboy, as i didn't like DA1.
@Herbstgespenst that doesn't mean DA2 is not a good game -.- ... i don't need a game to be 100% RPG to enjoy it... Bioware simply changed the style cuz it worked better... you can see a similar style in Mass Effect
@kavi089 judging from DA2's metacritic i'm right. Bioware didn't change it because it worked better, they changed it because EA wanted to milk the franchise by dumbing it down for the CoD/console masses.
@Herbstgespenst >>>The purpouse of a ROLEPLAYING game is to DEFINE your ROLE.<<<
Thank you! So true. And Dragon Age 2 is pure garbage. Even my girlfriend who plays and finishes EVERY RPG or quasi-RPG she can find is having a hard time getting into it.
@Herbstgespenst I completely agree with you but its not surprising though. Did you know how much those shitty Bigfish Game HOG make them per year? Lets just say its leaps and bounds ahead of any AAA title (but seriously do go look it up, be amazed). If Bioware "dumbs" it down for gaming Moms to play they stand to make a killing then. There isn't a huge enough group of players that just like hardcore, takes you awhile to learn, RPG titles any more. Its quite sad they are going this route.
@Herbstgespenst DA2 was such a disappointment :/ I didn't really regard it as a roleplaying game as such. It's just a hack and slash game with a story line.
I cried a little when they released Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance... that was their first step away from the good thing they had going. BG2 is their best game ever.
@Herbstgespenst Not being able to choose your race is quite bad indeed. I was so looking forward to be able to play as a Qunari.
But in Planescape Torment you can't choose the protagonist's race and sex but it takes role-playing ti a whole new dimension, quite literally in it's case.
