  • 45 ACP my favorite pistol round

not too big, not too small

    juuuust right

  • Ron Paul 2012 ! to fix the world.

  • Excellent review, thank you!

  • AL GORE DID NOT INVENT THE INTERNET !!! AL GORE IS A COOOK AND A LIAR !! Great Vid Otherwise !

  • Beastly round I carry everyday! So do many of the Officers in my town.

  • what part of tn you in im from knoxville

  • i have a question for you, how do you get ballistic gelatin? did u make it or purchase it? if u made it do a video on how to make it or if you bought it how much is it? and where do u get it? thank's

  • Over penetration.

  • Wow, it b an overkill, it will go wright thrue someone and keep on goin, never knew these rounds are so powerfull they tearing up the milk jugs, never saw it against the ballistic gel. Thanks for posting info!!!! i Love them 1911's

  • i love that these are enclosed base.

  • im not sure how the ballistics gel compairs to human body. worried about over penetration, and constantly see ballistic gel tests that show up to 12 in.

  • @budgray18 most gel is about 3 times as soft as flesh, particularly when the gel gets warm.

  • @gunman848 not if you calibrate it correctly.

  • @mattc1683 what i usually see, is that its very soft, bb penetration is 6 inches, i use gel at 2.5 inch penetration with bb's, with 1 inches of ice to simulate a breastplate.

  • Is the bonded better than the non-bonded ammo ? Just curious

  • I have 1500rds of this ammo in .9 .40 .45 I love this round my dad depends on this round everyday when he carries it in his glock 30

  • 2:37 made me sick to my stomach .. D: that happend to the inside of my leg.. D: budlight doesnt taste good with bullets!

  • @wraptin6strings Fuck! You shot your leg with Hydra-Shoks? What caliber?

  • Merry Christmas! I always really appreciate your ballistics vids. It seems to me that most or all of the comments I've read about unreliable expansion of this round have been from folks firing it from a short (less than 4") barrel. I am definitely NOT knowledgeable about ballistics - just an observation. I'm wondering if you've ever had occasion to test .45 ammo through a shorter barrel(?). IS there a .45 round with sufficient velocity to expand properly through shorter barrels? Thinking G30/36.

  • I've been using Hydroshok's for a long time, and I will continue to do so. This test is consistant with what I have found, and proves to be a very effective SD round. Thank you for taking the time to post this.

  • Comforting it is to know I have 11 of these at my back... and 10 more at my hip, if I need to reload, I'm doing my job wrong.

  • I would stick with this round only in calibers above 9mm. There was a shooting where a guy was struck twice in the chest wiith 9mm hydroshock and both failed to expand, he did not go down.

  • @Vernonu9, its a 9mm, if u use .45 you'll take anything down unless you shooting a bear

  • @Chinunit22 .45 will take any human down, animals are a whole other story. Bears, hogs and big cats may not be stunned so quickly. Sure it might kill them, but it might not stop them before they kill you lol.

  • @pac6010 actually .45 will not take any human down. I have seen several times a man getting hit with a .45 and not going down even after 3 shots hit center mass in Iraq. It depends on the person and the quality of the round as well as thousends of other factors. with modern bullitt technology there realy is no diffrence between 9mm and .45 in a good quality hollow point. Before hollow points is when .45 was better. now days its ALL about shot placement, nothing more.

  • @mattc1683 Ya I mean to say is a man with three .45 rounds in him center mass isn't going to live. I wasn't really counting on stopping power before an animal or human reach's you. That's something different entirely in which I have to differ to you if you have said real world experiences with it. But a .45 will kill a person in time, its by no means a weak round.

  • @pac6010 I didnt say its weak, by no means are any rounds weak. from .380 to .45 as long as you have a good hollowpoint like a speer gold dot or any other reliable round and you place your rounds on a vital area the enemy will die. but the fact that its a .45 makes no diffrence at all in how fast they will die. the argument about caliber with modern ammo is pointless and stupid. they all kill just as fast. EVERY caliber has killed someone effectivly

  • @Vernonu9 You hit someone with .45 hydroshock whether it expands or not it will still knock the attacker down and mess him up, its like he be getiing hit by a car @ 50 mph.

  • @Chinunit22 ok Chinunit, saying that a .45 hydroshock is like getting hit by a car @ 50mph is taking it waaaaaay too far.

  • @Chinunit22 no its not...not even close. the recoil you feel in your hand from the pistol is the same impact the person getting shot will feel. It is simple physics, for every action there is an equal and oposit reaction nothing more nothing less.

  • Yes

  • @Vernonu9 Could you post the source for that? I would like to read about that.

  • I SEALED the nose with Elmer's glue, do you think this will help? it is a solid tip that will have the effect of a Hornady

  • @Doyouknowhowmuchusuc Never a good idea to modify your ammo unless you can then test it like in this video.

  • @Kylef7735 I am waiting on the stuff to come in the mail now, yes, I am going to test it with the gel.

  • @Doyouknowhowmuchusuc Ohh ok, Awesome!

  • Not trying to rush or be a pain, but if you could get around to it I would really love to see a review of the pow'r ball ammunition in .45 acp. We show your videos at the gun shop I work at all the time. Keep up the good work.

  • This has been my departments' issued duty ammo for going on 20 yrs.

  • Out-dated, my foot. Great review!

  • I have been shooting this for years, its better than any other kind out. I carry 40 and 45.

  • This is still a good round after 20+ years ! The heavier bullets in all handgun calibers penetrate more than the lighter ones.

  • "right before Al Gore created the internet and global warming."

    LOLz

  • That's comforting that I got 14 of these in my xd lol just gotta do my part and hit them in the right spot.

  • shooting someone with anything less than a 45 is just gonna get you killed. Sorry 9mm and .40 fans.

  • @SupremeAmerican Many fell to both 9mm and 40 S&W. Tell that to the families of WWII vets who died at the hands of a Walther P-38 in 9mm FMJ !

  • @TommyGuns40 9mm has never killed anyone. Provide me the sources or else you lie.

  • @SupremeAmerican You never heard too many wwII war stories have you ? I hung out at a VFW and those guys would know if any !! The germans killed many with the 9mm, especially jews ! What planet are you from ?

  • @TommyGuns40 My Grandpa was in the 101st airborne. He para trooped on D-day, and got leave when he was at Wolf Mansion. I'm extremely familiar with war stories.

  • For a hollow point this slug penetrated slightly deeper than a lot of Hollow points,

even in 45 many hollow points barely go 13 inches deep. Where full metal jacket rounds general go over 20 inches. There lots of hype about over penetration hitting a by stander, which is B/S in a 100 years no bystander been killed by over penetration. Where as Placement and penetration, are 100 times more important than expansion or caliber. Believe the hype? or protect your life? FMJ is the way to go,even in 380.

  • @surfside006 especially in 380

  • I am curious as to how it would perform out of a Kimber Ultra Carry II. It's a pretty short barrel, so not sure if the velocity is up there. Always been a hydra shock fan, though,

  • Ditto on what comiax said ! No offense to the people of the great state of Tennessee, but an Al Gore slam will earn you a subscription from me. Plus I really enjoy the ammo data and your info goes well with what one can glean from Hickok45. If I was from Tennessee, I'd be proud to remember far more of Howard Baker. :-D

  • so far your tests have been showing 45ACP is out penetrating 380, 9mm, and 40cal. Is thos correct?

  • @MrAzcabowabo Not exactly correct, not exactly much difference between 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP if they are JHP Premium Defense ammo at $25.00 a box of 20. All penetrate about 13 inches more or less. Now if you shoot 380 in JHP pricy Gold Dots you get about 10 inches more or less. However if you shoot most all Cheapo FMJ target ammo most all calibers will exceed 20 inches of penetration. With FMJ The dead body will have the same hole as JHP but twice as deep. Temporary JHP Excision closes up.

  • I've been a fan of the HSJHP line for quite some time. I think the issue is that when you get down to the smaller calibers like .380 and 9mm there simply isn't enough cross section to work with. I've had nothing but impressive results with .40 and .45

  • when are you going to do a test on the 200gr +p "flying ashtray" ? the best ammo tests on you tube. thanks!

  • Can you test the CorBon .45ACP 185 gr +P cartridge? Thanks

  • Fill that cavity with bathroom silicon seal and fire it through 5 layers of denim and see what happens.

  • Why the head of the bullet is like that.

  • Try drilling the post out of one of these old Hydra-Shok bullets.

    Won't expand.

  • ok so i am looking for a gun that would be able to keep for self defense but wouldn't kill a human, just stop them. would this kill a human?

  • @obamasucksdick999 a .22 LR will kill a human. A slingshot will kill a human. A baseball bat will kill a human. Of course this will kill a human. I would recommend a Taser or pepper spray......... perhaps a large dog.

  • "Way before Al Gore invented the internet & global warming"....LMAO that earned my subscription.

  • @comlax22 he was joking right

  • @comlax22 I subscribed too.

  • I love that gun...

  • try the federal Hydra- Shock HST its better than this one

  • I'd guess that the reason they keep selling this is that they're making a profit on it and it's not hurting HST sales. Simple economics.

  • I was asking myself, what's the point in using hollow point bullets for self defence? it's not self defence, it's destroying the burglar/thief/raper or whatever he is... don't say that he doesn't deserve that but, it's a little more that self defence, it's self defence plus damaging and likely killing. It's like self-made justice. what do you think?

  • @ibook06 If you want to stop someone from raping your wife I'd rather use a bullet that will STOP the attacker. If he dies so be it, I don't want to fire a round into him and to have him keep coming at you after that first shot. "It's like self-made justice." If someone is trying to harm you or family, as a law abiding citizen you should use "self-made justice" in defending yourself. Not my fault the perp made the choice to harm me. The round he gets hit with is irrelevant in what is "just."

  • I hope that the Al Gore thing was for joke O.o

  • I have a box of these in .40 S&W sitting the gun lock for a while now. Even though I also invested in Winchester and Speer Gold Dot Bonded ammo as well as the exotic Federal EFMJ, watching this result makes me want to give the ammo another look. It does have some pretty good ratings in Evan Marshall's research on handgun stopping power. Thanks for posting.

  • The hydra-shok i think is officially the small block chevy of HP bullet designs, it just seems to work.

  • Great test as always. While I don't think the Hydrashok is a bad round, I do think it is fairly outdated. With offerings such ass the HST and the Ranger T-Series, this rounds performance looks mediocre. DO I have some stashed away? Yes. Is it my primary load? No.

  • global warming lol

  • i've shot a deer four times with this round in .40sw and it still ran off.

  • Federal makes 45acp in 165 grain and 230 grain. Can anyone tell me the difference and what's better for self-defense?

  • @JGD1985 I believe the 165 grain load is designed more for pistols with shorter barrels where muzzle velocity will not be quite as high.

The 230 grain load is designed for full size (4.5-5" barrel) pistols.

  • The .45ACP is an amazing firearm, great stopping power.

  • @pcursed - You have to look deeper than the caliber of most handgun rounds.. some of the 9mm 124g +p can produce some amazing results and some of the .40 s&w loads can exceed the energy of .45 acp rounds.. Stopping power based on caliber is a joke, it's all about shot placement !

  • Joint the opinion of xtremearmor. I was waiting this testing for a while as I have a few boxes of these ammo. Great job as always. Thanks a lot.

  • I really like these sim tests that you do! Thank you so much for doing them and please keep up the good work!

  • Expanded nicely; I would like to see the 230gr .45cal Winchester Ranger T using the SIM test.

  • I love your ammo reviews, they help me so much in making purchases.

  • Way cool ballistics test. Really enjoy the close ups of the bullet once it was removed from the media. It did an interesting expansion. Now these are not bonded bullets are they? I sure do enjoy your ballistics tests and I have say that I use these as my reference when I buy ammo for carry. Keep up the great work.

  • @xtremearmor

I am reasonably certain these are NOT bonded bullets.

  • I'd love to see you do a test on the Grizzley ammo.

  • This is good info. I have a box of these that have been sitting in my safe for several years. Maybe I will keep a couple mags loaded with them.

  • 1 person must have stumbled upon your' channel by mistake

  • Well done. IMO, the Fed HS in 230gr JHP is the benchmark that all other 45acp JHPs are compared to. Granted, bullet technology has steadily improved, but the HS in this caliber can still be counted on to give you deep penetration and at least a .45+ sized hole.

  • I was very excited to see the cavity left by this round, "nasty" sums it up.

    Great job again!

  • That kind of bullet is very dangerous to human. The surgeons will have some difficulties in saving the lives of the recipients.

  • THE 9MM HYDRASHOK HE MEASURED OPENED UP TO .80! IF THEY BOTH OPEN UP TO ABOUT THE SAME, HOW THE FUCK CAN ANYONE ARGUE .45 IS MORE EFFECTIVE THAN 9 WITH THE MODERN BALLISTIC TECHNOLOGY?!!! HOW?!!! WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE LET ME KNOW?!!! PLEASE?!!!!!!

  • @MichaelRudnicki I believe the old saying goes, "A 9mm might expand but a .45 will never shrink" the thinking being there that if the 9mm fails to expand it's only a .30 cal round where if the .45 fails to expend it will be bigger than the 9mm. Then there's the argument of weight and speed, do you want a faster lighter bullet or a slower heavier bullet? In the end what matters most is what you can shoot the best, 9mm or .45 won't help you if you can't hit what you're shooting at.

  • That is one heck of a nasty round.......

  • i'm sure this has been asked & answered many times so i apologize in advance, but could you please let me know where you purchased that steel silhouette target? thanks so much

  • @FoodFolksandGuns

Mike Gibson Targets, located in Idaho. Once it cools off I need to break out all the targets for a review.

  • @tnoutdoors9 thanks for the reply. i just ordered one from Brownells. with my 03 FFL discount it wasn't too bad!

  • @tnoutdoors9 Please do!

  • very nice round.....think it would good for home defence

  • Well done. Like you said...you either hear really good things or really bad things about that round. Great job!

  • I've always wondered what the results would be if you filled the hollow point with silicone and let it cure...I bet it would expand more reliably....just a thought...

  • As I recall, the 45 ACP Hydra shock has always had the best record for expansion in the Hydra shock line.

More interested in seeing how this performance would be in say a 9 mm. As I've heard more bashing done on the smaller calibers.

  • Great video as usual.

  • You have the best ammo reviews I've ever seen. I've been subbed for a few years now and this has been my "go to" channel for ballistics testing. Please continue the great work!

  • nice test I have a box of the 9MM federal hydra-shok and i would use it if need be, cool to see the efects od that round. Thanks!

  • nice i assume the 9mm reacts closely to this i may have to look into this round

  • do you add the night sounds?

  • @ZDubz802

Nope, they are real. In live in a jungle.

  • @tnoutdoors9 awesome

  • @tnoutdoors9 No my brother, I live in a jungle- south Florida- inside the Everglades- a stones throw from the Seminole.

  • @tnoutdoors9 haha....You're more than welcome to shoot with me anytime. In Florida...

  • i was hoping to see some cavity expansion in the middle of the bullet's path but its seems like it didnt have any. dont get me wrong, im a .45 1911 owner..

  • Those are some wicked looking cutting edges on that jacket! That is exactly the result I was hoping for... Federal makes some good ammo, and I have always been a fan of the Hydra-shoks, but I have not tried them in my 1911 yet. Based on this test, I will definitely give them a try, though. Thanks for another great video.

  • that sim test block got what was coming to him. good shooting

  • Anybody know where I can go to view effectiveness of real world use? Not just the round but others as well?

    Another awesome video.

  • Nice video

  • I just love, love your videos in hd! Once again, thanks for taking time to make these quality tests.

  • WooT TN, I'm always happy when one your ammo tests is in .45acp, My Favorite Caliber =)

  • I'm glad HS is in my Glock. Thanks.

  • The second you said Al Gore invented the internet, i clicked the like button, hahaha. i used to carry Federal Hydra-Shok in my glock 22 180 gr .40 S&W, i liked them a lot.

  • Nice to see you testing this round, it's what I carry in my EDC full size 1911.

  • I have never seen any bad reports on the 45 ACP hydra-shock. I have always counted it as the standard that other 45 ACP loads are judged by.

  • Always great information. Thanks for your efforts.

  • Would love to see the Hydra Shok 9 millimeter tested.

  • Another great ammo test. Thank you sir!

  • Excellant video.

  • TN you forgot to mention ManBearPig

  • I've been thinking, the .45acp is so big to begin with any expansion is gravy. If I lived in a state or county that outlawed hollowpoints the .45 would be the only thing I would carry. Maybe 10mm. If you look at some of the .380 and 9mm tests, some of those bullets in HP might not even expand to .45 inches.

  • it looks like a nipple, lol

  • love ur vids, i wish i can shoot all these rounds, but cant afford them hahah keep up the great work

  • Do you think changing the block temp. to around 98 degree's would affect the results/ add a more realistic quality to the media?

  • @cwbyfan223

It won't make it to 98 degrees. If realistic is something similar to a sticky goo, that would do it. Calibrated gel has to be refrigerated, so its temperature is likely much lower than the typical 68 degrees I'm getting with SIM-TEST. SIM TEST is safe to store at a cool room temperature. Once exposed to heat SIM-TEST will melt then dehydrate, transitioning to a dark, more solid mass. I have some slices in the backyard that could be used as shoe soles.

  • 1080p Woohoo!

  • LOL, Al Gore!

  • You're video quality is fantastic! thanks for sharing.

  • have you ever tested the Speer Gold Dot's and/or compared them to the Hydra-Shocks? i've been carrying the Gold Dot's forever, they are incredibly consistent. never seen a core/jacket seperate with em. subbed.

  • @ADaisyCutter Yes he has, check out some of his older vids, he carries GD 9mm 124 in the summer 147HST winter. He has several tests of the GoldDots

  • @dphitch

interesting. i'll check it out. the tests on the GD i've seen were really good, including my own. good ammo.

  • God god!

  • i'v been carrying the hydra shok for nearly 20 years, in mainly .380 and .40 smith & wesson. it's the only h.p. I trust.

  • Good review,Best ammo test on youtube thanks.

  • Very nicely done. I think the one thumb down is from an Al Gore fanboy.

  • Wow. .77 inch expansion. 3/4 inch +

With the 15 inch penetration, I would say this is a good round.

  • Great video. I was curious how these actually perform. I use these for my home defense.

  • i uae this in my. 40 s ill have try it in 45 great test

  • oh the bugs

  • Every time I see one of these tests, I grab a big bowl of Coca Pebbles and take a seat in front of the monitor. These are almost like television shows for me.

  • the post that hurts the most

  • Thumbs up if you want to see some monkey testing to get more realistc results~

  • If my department issued the hydrashok, I would have no problems carrying it. I think the hydrashok is still one of the best loads available.

  • i love how comperhesive your reviews are.....very good work thomas! sure beats the the typical shooting water vids

  • Great review.

  • good stuff

  • Thumbs up for the Al Gore comment alone. lol

  • Awesome test! This is my main carry load.

    Thanks for posting tnoutdoors9!

  • I'm not surprised. There is a reason it has been around for 20+ years and is still selling among LEO and CCW holders.....it works.

  • That expansion is purdy

  • Great vids!!!

  • Great video !!!! If you could it be great to get some playlists organized by caliber. ;)

  • @MrRubberducky216

You mean I haven't done that already? :-)

  • Very Interesting. Thanks.

    eb1

  • This is why I subscribed to your channel, you don't push your opinion onto the viewer, you don't ramble on with a bunch of useless talk that takes you off topic, and you are well spoken, concise, and cover in a couple minutes what others would turn into a 20 minute video. Keep up the great work.

  • @MThrow Well sais sir.

  • Great video. Glad to see the ole hydra-shok remains tried and true.

  • Good job.Well thought out and to the point.

  • I used to use them years ago. They seemed to have made the nose a bit more rounded than the original. Maybe it's just me. I always thought the Hydra Shock was a great round!

  • TN, thanks for posting this. I've got around 150 rounds of this collecting dust from 10 or so years gone by. I recently got back into 1911's after going through a Glock .45 phase. I had originally bought these off the shelf when I had a 1991A1 but never bothered with them anymore. I have to tell you, I'm surprised. Real surprised. I appreciate the effort and time you devote to these vids as they are great. Really, really happy to have stumbled upon this one this morning. I'm going digging now.

  • Have in my G30, looks great. 15" through your test gun is excellent, much more than I expected. Thanks for the test!

  • scary stuff being a grownup in a dangerous world. The debate about whether to kill or not, or carry or not doesn't belong on this evaluation video. Its a terrible thing, killing a man, like Clint Eastwood said in Unforgiven, but it is a part of life in a world gone over to the dark side.

To do it responsibly, and be effective, education and proficiency saves lives as well as it takes.

Antigunners, and safety Sallies have wasted more lives than proper firearm handling ever will.

    Hydra shok A+

  • Looks like a great round to me.

  • looks allright to me..outdated or not..appreciate you doing these test..

  • has the mid case crimp caused any feeding issues in your 1911? my kel-tek pf-9 dosent like that crimp and sometimes causes failure to feed, three different magazines same result.
