I was told in 1974 by a geologist in the oil business that oil had been discovered in the Gulf of Tonkin prior to our entering into war there.
A recent google search found that to be true. Also Mobile oil drilled there in 1975, and was the first to strike oil in the Gulf of Tonkin. Friends coming home from Nam all complained the war was designed to not be won...(but just in we did-there was oil)
