A great clip. But I'm surprised this video as a whole doesn't have more dislikes when the uploader is flat-out calling this Lynch masterpiece a "crappy movie".
Frank is one wild uninhibited fucker! I know I've felt this way a few times after getting really drunk I'LL FUCK ANYTHING THAT MOVES! HAHAHAHAHA He's such a badass scary boogeyman!
okay yes its not a crappy movie at all infact i love it. but i hate all these fucking shit heads that get on here and bitch at this person for saying its a crappy movie. and then trying to talk about how its so artsy and different seriously shut the fuck up your just as bad and fucking annoying as the guy who said it was crappy. its a movie, a good one at that, BUT JUST A MOVIE.
Crappy movie? Oh, this is rich. Perhaps, you would prefer something a little more mundane, safe, & understandable. When I learned about the film style of Lynch being largely influenced by his Asperger syndrome, I was even more intrigued. But, for the simpletons, this tends to be a bit too advanced. So, I do understand you statement. I hear Van Diesel makes some wonderful movies.
You're an idiot who probably knows nothing about David Lynch anyway. It's one thing if the film isn't your cup of tea, but to label it crappy is ridiculous.
Hopper as Frank is a phenomenal character, but Blue Velvet is just a little above average and nowhere near other monuments like Mulholland Drive or Eraserhead. Calling it "crappy" is a bit of a stretch though.
To me, it's Lynch's most futile attempt at surrealism (that I've seen, I haven't seen Wild At Heart), with way too many scenes seeming forced for the sole purpose of making Lynch seem "mysterious". It works very well sometimes, notably the scene with Ben which is genuinely brooding, but the whole film comes off as a decent mystery story rife with lame thematic elements (small town, crazy shit) with a tacked on "surreal" touch. I'll take the visceral powerhouse of Mullholland Drive instead.
the film wasn't meant to be purely surreal, lynch does things odd things in his film's because "it feels right." you havn't looked at the film in right way, you havn't analysed it on a visual level. You haven't picked up on it's observations of the white pickett fence or it's coming of age theme through sexual maturity. Film makers, like lynch, don't just make films to be brooding, they often have an underlying visual subtext, dont just pay attention to the atmosphere, its much more than that.
I've picked up on those things, and sort of mentioned it in my above post (the small town comment, didn't have enough space to work with in the single comment), and none of them come off as executed in a well above average fashion. One of my favorite things about other Lynch films is the blend of moments that "feel right", complemented by fundamental themes that twist the psyche in a complex manner. Blue Velvet seems like an ambitious but incoherent attempt at that style he has refined now.
well i strongly disagree, maybe i's easier its viewed by someone who feels comfortable being bombarded by visuals, and you cannot say that the way blue velvet delivers its themes is average, have you seen a film (apart from previous lynch films) that is anything like this and is sold to a mainstream market? its hardly ambitious as well, lynch agreed to have the films budget cut in half just so he can have the final cut. surely if lynch was being ambitious he would require a larger budget
I'm perfectly comfortable with being bombarded by visuals (other Lynch films are among my favorites, notably Mull. Dr). It isn't a matter of being overwhelmed by content, it's just that the final product is far from stellar when it comes down to it. I'm not sure why you would mention the mainstream market (it's irrelevant when any form of quality art is the matter at hand), and I fail to see how ambition in making a piece of art inherently correlates with financial production values.
Well, an audience matters hugely to any art, people dont make art for the sake of making art they make to sell. The film was released to mainstream audience and such people are not used to seeing a film that calibre, it's logical to proceive that the film is not average, even if you think its not a very good film its not an average film. And youve stated that you felt the film was a mess, it made sense to me. can you explain any of the subtexts i mentioned? Explain how frank is sexualy impotent
A piece of art is a piece of art regardless of how large the audience that it is released to is, such a factor should have no bearing on the assessment of the piece of art in any way shape or form. When I use the term "average", I'm not asserting that it's a generic movie made from a template or anything, I'm just saying that the level of quality is nothing that I would consider outstanding.
As for the subtext you mentioned, I haven't seen the film in quite some time, so I can't comment on that in particular, but I think Frank's sexual deviance might coincide with his age (the correlation between sex and age is notable throughout) and his place in his gang of ruffians, possibly.
Well, there a LOT more to the subtext than that. Lol, it basically says that all male's want to fuck their mothers. And that even if something appears perfect, it's sick and shit on the inside. I don't see how you comment on the films quality if you don't even know the subtext of the film. But lets agree to disagree and to agree that mulholland drive is awesome.
I think that sort of view about the mother fucking is the product of commonplace over analyzing that is far too remote to have any concrete evidence outside of your own subjective hunch (all interpretations are these things, but some are more evident than others). The second point you made is just a reinforcement of the film's general theme of things that appear fine on the outside are often depraved on the inside (again, small town, crazy shit).
HA, you have not looked at the film at all. I've studied this in college, i know my shit about Blue Velvet. When it comes to analyzing a film, if you have a theory and you back up with plenty of evidence (which i can) it becomes fact. Thats the first thing they teach in college. I would write a huge load of proof of my theory, but there isn't enough room in the comment box. Instead read Blue Velvet by Michael Atkinson published by the British Film Intitute. it's all there. May be on the internet
Of course I understand the process of supporting the basis of a personal interpretation when it comes to any artistic medium, what the fuck do you take me for? No "theory" will ever be a "fact" (I take this term in a mathematical context) in art, as even if one's interpretation of a work's implications are in agreement with what the artist/s were looking to achieve, as that isn't the end all be all of the piece of art's value.
I'll look into finding that short by Atkinson on the internet. The Amazon reviews have piqued my interest, but there's no way I'm paying upwards of 30 dollars for it.

and at any rate, average films don't contain any subtext at all, while blue velvet is a subtext incarnate.
