This is 1 impressive tank! Best tank in Asia. L55 gun of Leo2A6 and can survive L55 hits frontal. I've also read protection comparable to M1A2 Abrams (which is the best protected tank) but at lighter weight.
It can engage targets up to 10km(!) away and has an autoloader that actually works.
Drawback: Its the most expensive tank ever and current version uses ERA (which is obsolte). But the ERA will be replaced by passive in update.
Only thing missing is all-round protection like TUSK or PSO.

Its maximum range is 8km away and to achieve that range it has to fire like an artillery gun. ERA isnt obsolete and its a chance for any tank to survive a Sabot round, and passive is basically base armor. Chally 2 needs ERA. Without ERA, the Challenger 2 would have exploded when it was attacked by an RPG-29. Abrams w/o ERA also got knocked out in one hit....
Not true. Abrams is better protected. It has chobham variant + DU. Chal. has no DU. Abrams has blow-out panels to crew can survive if ammo is hit.
ERA is obsolete. It has little protection against KE and dual warheads defeat it. Passive armor protects against KE and HE just as good and multiple times. Despite K5 ERA Leo2 A6 and Abrams can kill T-90 or T-80U with 1 hit at 4km.

No ERA can stop high-caliber KE. It adds a tiny bit of KE protection but not much. It can stop a singe HE or missile without dual warhead.
Abrams does not need ERA. 1 RPG-29 penetrated side hull (which is weakness) but there were no injuries. Just a little hole. As a result the TUSK upgrade added ERA to side hull.
They could better use passive like Leo2 PSO/A7 because it protects against both KE and HE just as good.
Israelis were the first to use ERA. They have only used it as cheap way to add protection to (older) tanks. The Merkava doesn't have it because it doens't need it.
ERA was used to upgrade older M60 series as Magach 6. But in more modern variants such as Magach 7 and Magach 6 Batash (AKA Magach 8) it has been replaced with passive armor.
Same is seen in other western countries. French AMX-30 has ERA but Leclerc does not.

The technology is for it is copied from western countries primarily the U.S.. Too much money has been and continues to be spent baby sitting this country to protect it from North Korea. K2 (vs Leopard 2) is 7 tons lighter, has equal firepower, equal speed, shorter operational range (+100 km for Leo), superior protection, superior power/weight ratio. Smaller crew of 3 (leo - 4). But K2 costs around $3.5 - 4 million more.

This is 1 impressive tank! Best tank in Asia. L55 gun of Leo2A6 and can survive L55 hits frontal. I've also read protection comparable to M1A2 Abrams (which is the best protected tank) but at lighter weight.
It can engage targets up to 10km(!) away and has an autoloader that actually works.
Drawback: Its the most expensive tank ever and current version uses ERA (which is obsolte). But the ERA will be replaced by passive in update.
Only thing missing is all-round protection like TUSK or PSO.

@NationalSniper The best protected tank is Challenger 2 and Abrams only has the heaviest and fattest armor(heavy/fat doesnt mean better). Its maximum range is 8km away and to achieve that range it has to fire like an artillery gun. ERA isnt obsolete and its a chance for any tank to survive a Sabot round, and passive is basically base armor. Chally 2 needs ERA. Without ERA, the Challenger 2 would have exploded when it was attacked by an RPG-29. Abrams w/o ERA also got knocked out in one hit....

Not true. Abrams is better protected. It has chobham variant + DU. Chal. has no DU. Abrams has blow-out panels to crew can survive if ammo is hit.
ERA is obsolete. It has little protection against KE and dual warheads defeat it. Passive armor protects against KE and HE just as good and multiple times. Despite K5 ERA Leo2 A6 and Abrams can kill T-90 or T-80U with 1 hit at 4km.

No ERA can stop high-caliber KE. It adds a tiny bit of KE protection but not much. It can stop a singe HE or missile without dual warhead.
Abrams does not need ERA. 1 RPG-29 penetrated side hull (which is weakness) but there were no injuries. Just a little hole. As a result the TUSK upgrade added ERA to side hull.
They could better use passive like Leo2 PSO/A7 because it protects against both KE and HE just as good.
I expect they replace ERA with passive in M1A3.

Israelis were the first to use ERA. They have only used it as cheap way to add protection to (older) tanks. The Merkava doesn't have it because it doens't need it.
ERA was used to upgrade older M60 series as Magach 6. But in more modern variants such as Magach 7 and Magach 6 Batash (AKA Magach 8) it has been replaced with passive armor.
Same is seen in other western countries. French AMX-30 has ERA but Leclerc does not.

If you put ERA on a tank with already strong base armor T-90's Wolframium Carbide armor plates(same as Leo 2A6), it would mean it could not be killed in one hit while the base armor stays intact. The Asad Babil with outdated and underpowered RU ammunition that took out an Abrams in Iraq in 1 hit Urban proves how ERA can save lives.

Before you are comparing the K2 with the M1 Abrams... The K2 is from 2010. The newest version of the Abrams the M1A2SEP is from 1992. That are 12 Years difference. In 6 Years the M1A3 should be in Service already, the were 6 years (+) than you can compare the Grandfather to the Daddy.

K2 (vs Leopard 2) is 7 tons lighter, has equal firepower, equal speed, shorter operational range (+100 km for Leo), superior protection, superior power/weight ratio. Smaller crew of 3 (leo - 4). But K2 costs around $3.5 - 4 million more.

Korea has been manufacturing M256, which is the American licensed version of the Rhinemetall L44... and you know that L55 is essentially the same as L44... and just like the Israel has stretched the L44 and turned it into 55-caliber gun, it is conceivable that the Koreans have done the same.

Yes, I got the message. But I don't agree with you.
I heard the smoothbore gun development plan with my friend who works in ADD and he said K2's main gun is made by ADD and WIA.
But I can say to you that when ADD made a design of the K2's main gun, they refered to the Rheinmetall L44 in K1A1.
But it does not mean that the gun is under license by Rheinmetall, got it?

Oh, no.
140mm is not useless in Korea's mountainous districts.
So, We do NOT want the 140mm gun and we do NOT consider it. Instead, we are preparing ETC(Electro Thermal Chemical) gun. We have a plan to develop the ETC gun until 2015.

Boy ... it is a official matter that South Korea want the Rheinmetall 140mm L/47 gun.
Rheinmetall has discontinued the development and so has South Korea decided to the Rheinmetall 120mm L/55.

The next thing I've found ... the K2 engine is the MTU MB 883 - Ka 500. MTU is a German company. The Leopard 2 has a MTU MB 883 - Ka 501 engine ...
And the license version from the Rheinmetall 120mm L/55, called KM256, has the French autoloader from the AMX-56 "Leclerc" ...

Why are u veering off topic on world w/o ballistic missile, stealth, light etc?? We r debating on MBT right now. When war happen, do look into lack of resources & time for maintenance. So tanks that require less service & being able to pack some punch wins. Leo2 seems to have lots of technical servicing. Not encouraged during wartime.

The K-2 has higher chance to see battle than Leo2. Leo2 is just too expensive to be sent into battle. Most owners will be less willing to allow Leo2 into battle.
