Am sorry to say that people in Chicago are still doing the chair/table/couch thing to save their parking spaces. It's of course illegal, but when one shovels out a space, they feel that they own it. This "tradition" began with the 1967 snowstorm (which was REALLY unbelievable!) and it still continues to this day. I'm glad that I live in a hi=rise condo and have indoor parking. When the weather gets bad, the car stays in the garage and I use the bus. Haven't shoveled snow in 35 years.
I grew up in Hometown and Arlington Heights before my family moved us to Atlanta. I moved back to Chicago for a year in 2008 and I loved living downtown and being within walking distance to nearly everything, but the city rule of moving your car every 7 days or risk having it towed for "abandonment" was the craziest rule I've ever encountered.
I was using 'chairs' but they would move them and park anyway. So I went and bought two 'spike' strips (the kind the police roll out when they have a car chase) that are only 5 feet long. Now if they want my space they can have it til the tow truck comes to remove thier car!!
I remember that blizzard, can't say I miss all the snow now that I left . Tell me, are there any white people left in Chicago? or is just the dumb liberal whites who are there?
@poidog44 well idiots keep voting for the same crooks (democrats)year after year and election after election and keep expecting things to change. just shows how STUPID people like YOU and they are. have fun paying your 66 percent tax hike.
well when u live in a complex, "MOST" residents are givin 2 spots, atleast where I'm from anyways, so if i bust my ass for MY car i would have it towed, even if it was the COMPLEX owner. I dont care, my work now move it, don't like it then don't park here?! That would be like some one else chasing YOUR paycheck for work YOU did. But I allso c that others here think it's "gangster" to claim a parking spot that u busted ass to get, but why not? YOU STILL WORKED FOR IT!!
my mom got the chicago tribune newspaper with the front page saying 79' blizzard last christmas from my grandparents but my dog chewed and ripped it up
When I lived in Chicago at that time and someone parked in the spot that took me a couple hours to shovel out for my parents, I went back out and shoveled all the snow back in front of and behind their car so they HAD to get out and shovel the snow again if they wanted to get out. Needless to say, they didn't park there again, and yes, we put chairs out there to mark our spot.
just because you dug out a space doesn't mean you own it. Ever think that the person wanting to park there dug out the space they were originally parked in? So it would all even out in the end wouldn't it. Vadalizing a car is a crime.
@kcimos I never said that I agree with it. I just pointed out that some people take it very seriously.
You seem to be taking this personally. Probably one of those idiots that wait for someone else to shovel out a space so you can park your car there like you are fucking entitled.
@agentk1986 they do, and I was at my brothers looking for a spot, couldn't find one, so I drove over the chairs covering a spot in front of my brothers house. Let me tell you the dude whose chairs was there was pissed, but when my brother and his friends showed up this guy shut his mouth straight quick with no more to say. I say screw the chair rule, and just park where you want. P.S. remember to thank the guy for shoveling out a spot for you. LOL!!
@agentk1986 LOL!:)) me and my guy use2do the same trick!:P living on 5534N.Spaulding Ave,next 2kimbal ave,,begining from 92 until 96'' then we stopt!:( cuz the neighbors had enough from it:P lol!:))i guess that oldfashion trick didnt work anny more!:P

That just shows you how reckless snowplow drivers can be and why you should never trust them with your chairs.

Oh how I remember this storm?
I was standing at a bus stop for almost an hour for a Irving park bus in this storm.
When the bus finally drove up it was packed w/passengers.
The poor bus driver was so upset that he wrote a sign & taped it on the front of his money deposit...
I'M SORRY THIS WAS NOT MY FAULT!
It did make us laugh!

When someone goes through the trouble of shoveling a mountain of snow to clear a spot then you had better respect that effort.
It has been that way for as long as I can remember here in Chicago.
