  • Am sorry to say that people in Chicago are still doing the chair/table/couch thing to save their parking spaces. It's of course illegal, but when one shovels out a space, they feel that they own it. This "tradition" began with the 1967 snowstorm (which was REALLY unbelievable!) and it still continues to this day. I'm glad that I live in a hi=rise condo and have indoor parking. When the weather gets bad, the car stays in the garage and I use the bus. Haven't shoveled snow in 35 years.

  • That just shows you how reckless snowplow drivers can be and why you should never trust them with your chairs.

  • I grew up in Hometown and Arlington Heights before my family moved us to Atlanta. I moved back to Chicago for a year in 2008 and I loved living downtown and being within walking distance to nearly everything, but the city rule of moving your car every 7 days or risk having it towed for "abandonment" was the craziest rule I've ever encountered.

  • I was using 'chairs' but they would move them and park anyway. So I went and bought two 'spike' strips (the kind the police roll out when they have a car chase) that are only 5 feet long. Now if they want my space they can have it til the tow truck comes to remove thier car!!

  • I remember this 1979 Chicago Blizzard! But this 2011 one is a monster! Anybody remember the 1967 and 1999 blizzards?

  • @Chicago10281 Wasnt born yet in '79 but I remember '99. It was a doozy

  • Get those chairs and milk crates out for 2001 : )

  • yes we still use chairs...usually the only ones we have...it's all we can afford for furniture due to all the fees and taxes.

  • Yes they stil do use chairs for there parking spot over there .

  • This is a great video. Wow...

  • Someone left a nice lamp to save a spot by me...I took it and I use it in my frunch room !

  • @WHTSOXX74 That was my lamp you bastard!! :(

  • Why the hell would a human choose to live like these people. Man, what a depressing swamp...not to mention the Cubs and da Bears!

  • smoking blunts watching the blizzard right now

  • oh yeah but its true they move your stuff or they take it lolol! we lost about 6 chairs doing that lol!

  • Get ready for the blizzard that's going to top that... Tonight.

  • I remember that blizzard, can't say I miss all the snow now that I left . Tell me, are there any white people left in Chicago? or is just the dumb liberal whites who are there?

  • @chitown1966 I believe the dumb people are with you.

  • @poidog44 well idiots keep voting for the same crooks (democrats)year after year and election after election and keep expecting things to change. just shows how STUPID people like YOU and they are. have fun paying your 66 percent tax hike.

  • well when u live in a complex, "MOST" residents are givin 2 spots, atleast where I'm from anyways, so if i bust my ass for MY car i would have it towed, even if it was the COMPLEX owner. I dont care, my work now move it, don't like it then don't park here?! That would be like some one else chasing YOUR paycheck for work YOU did. But I allso c that others here think it's "gangster" to claim a parking spot that u busted ass to get, but why not? YOU STILL WORKED FOR IT!!

  • That is retarded.

  • Wow chairs to reserve parking spaces.. the more you know. lol

  • I remember the snowstorm that hit Maryland a year or two ago.

  • i saw a group of people "tip over" a car because some lady got out of her car, moved a chair and parked in a spot that someone shoveled.

reserved parking in chicago is no joke.

  • @agentk1986 they try, if I see them on my street which is entirely multi unit apartments, I toss them in a dumpster.

  • Last time someone moved my chairs I put out some tire tacks this guy made at work in the shop and it didn't happen anymore,

  • my mom got the chicago tribune newspaper with the front page saying 79' blizzard last christmas from my grandparents but my dog chewed and ripped it up

  • i rember this well. i lived in villa park at the time.now i live in sav ga.dont miss the snow lol.

  • @musicman257 I remember this day well too now i am not living there anymore live in tornado alley Tennessee

  • Michael Bilandic's waterloo.

  • Oh how I remember this storm?

I was standing at a bus stop for almost an hour for a Irving park bus in this storm.

When the bus finally drove up it was packed w/passengers.

The poor bus driver was so upset that he wrote a sign & taped it on the front of his money deposit...

I'M SORRY THIS WAS NOT MY FAULT!

    It did make us laugh!

  • When I lived in Chicago at that time and someone parked in the spot that took me a couple hours to shovel out for my parents, I went back out and shoveled all the snow back in front of and behind their car so they HAD to get out and shovel the snow again if they wanted to get out. Needless to say, they didn't park there again, and yes, we put chairs out there to mark our spot.

  • @rrbond07

sounds really productive. Do you have a deed for the space that you "own"?

  • Why dont people just throw water on their cars to get the stuff off?

  • @GayTexasBoy Because water freezes, you moron.

  • i was in high scholl and my parents made me shovel snow all that night and early morning. I shoveled snow in front of the house 6 times!!

  • IS THAT THE HOUSE WHERE FAMILY MATTERS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FILMED AT?(0:35)

  • i remeber that year i was living in northlake

  • I lived in Berwyn, Ill. @ the time of the blizzard. What a mess. I moved to Florida the following year.

  • If you see a chair, broom, bucket or grandma in that spot,

    move on!

  • For those of us who were not there, it looks like they had a blizzard of chairs, lol.

  • Do people in Chicago still use chairs to reserve parking spaces? They were doing that when I lived there in the 90s.

  • sometimes, but in some neighborhoods ppl will just move you shit, i got into a fight last year because sombody moved my board

  • yes they do.

I remember when i was a kid in the 70's,my uncle moved somebody's chair from a parking spot, when he returned his tires were slashed.

  • yes they do

  • @agentk1986 - yes they do even 2010....I have seen dinette sets

  • @agentk1986 yes they still do. i live in chicago, thats how i know. lol

  • @agentk1986

No, they stopped doing that right after you left! *rolls eyes* Stupid ass question!

  • @agentk1986 Yes they still use chairs

  • @agentk1986 Yes they still use chairs in certain places

  • @agentk1986 yes they do :]

  • @agentk1986 Yes.

When someone goes through the trouble of shoveling a mountain of snow to clear a spot then you had better respect that effort.

It has been that way for as long as I can remember here in Chicago.

  • @Philtration

just because you dug out a space doesn't mean you own it. Ever think that the person wanting to park there dug out the space they were originally parked in? So it would all even out in the end wouldn't it. Vadalizing a car is a crime.

  • @kcimos I never said that I agree with it. I just pointed out that some people take it very seriously.

You seem to be taking this personally. Probably one of those idiots that wait for someone else to shovel out a space so you can park your car there like you are fucking entitled.

  • @agentk1986 YES!

  • @agentk1986 lol yeah i live in chicago too and i remember that and for some reson it seems they've stopped doing it so much.

  • @agentk1986 Yes, we still do.

  • @agentk1986 they do, and I was at my brothers looking for a spot, couldn't find one, so I drove over the chairs covering a spot in front of my brothers house. Let me tell you the dude whose chairs was there was pissed, but when my brother and his friends showed up this guy shut his mouth straight quick with no more to say. I say screw the chair rule, and just park where you want. P.S. remember to thank the guy for shoveling out a spot for you. LOL!!

  • @agentk1986 ...they still doing it..LOL

  • @agentk1986 LOL!:)) me and my guy use2do the same trick!:P living on 5534N.Spaulding Ave,next 2kimbal ave,,begining from 92 until 96'' then we stopt!:( cuz the neighbors had enough from it:P lol!:))i guess that oldfashion trick didnt work anny more!:P

  • @agentk1986 Yes they do, but the city is gonna start putting out fines for doing it.

  • @agentk1986 LOL yeah I think they still do.
