@Forkbringer244 He proved in his other video that the way he's tilting the ruler has nothing to do with it. Sorry buddy, guess you're not as smart as you thought
He tilts the ruler slightly to the way he's heading and puts so much weight on the rulers other side that it forces the lower wheels to be in charge instead of the big one wheel who would be in charge if you just gently slided the ruler.
You don't have to be a rocketscientist to see this, you just have to know how to count past potato and to have eyes.
Perhaps, if you implemented that system into a dynamo, with the outside physical force as the ruler and the the coil or magnet as the cart you could harness far more kinetic energy and thus produce a higher voltage?
@planetofthescums - um stalker weirdo, never claimed to KNOW EVERYTHING. I just made a comment implying this vid was pointless tripe. And I am entitled to do that. Go creep someone else.
@nitaell Your comment never appeared on my profile so you probably blocked me before making this comment. You can claim to be entitled to do many things but I don't think this is one of them.
@nitaell To clarify, you asked what the point in all this was, and it is to show certain people that they do not know everything. I don't need to be harassed for answering your question.
Imagine no wheels, as if everything's a cube. If there is a enough friction between the ruler and the cube to break the static friction with the ground, the car will move in the direction of the ruler at the same speed as the ruler. Now put the wheels back in. Wheels aren't effected (nearly as much) by friction. So as the cart gets pulled the cart wheels turn against the ground, they in turn make the big wheel turn, which walks along the ruler pulling the cart faster then the ruler.
Can you make more videos. Your voice is so soothing... lol i get like a pressure in my forehead/center of head when i listen to your voice explain things that feels so good... others seem to agree! (Its almost feels like an opiate, your voice that is!)

The driving force is from an external lever (the person), so, as you point out, the small wheels are driven, against the paper. The big wheel is an important factor too, though. The small wheels have mechanical advantage over the large wheel (large surface radius to small drive radius), so they drive it, rather than vice versa. A much smaller top-wheel, and the opposite happens. Also, if you mount a motor, instead of using external force, the opposite happens. The video should explain this.
"look at the angle of the ruler. see how it angles out when he moves it? he's NOT trying to move the big wheel, but instead, he's pushing down with the ruler to move the smaller wheels at the bottom. he's using the force of the ruler pressing down to provide traction for the smaller wheels to move. the big wheel is just to distract you.
Amazing, just marvelous, here the point is, where is your strenght going to? the big wheel? no... goes to the wheels in the bottom, by putting pressure in the cart against the floor, the little wheels are the ones doing the movement, and as they move to the right the big wheel will move in the opposite direction making the cart go faster. Am I correct?
Would I be correct in thinking that if you "bent" your ruler into a circle around the device, then rotated it, it's equivalent to a planetary gearbox, with the associated gearing effects? If so, this helps me understand DDWFTTW as a means of "gearing up" the vehicle speed relative to the windspeed. It would then be equivalent to holding the central sun gear (ground) fixed, and rotating the ring gear (wind), with the result that the planetary gears (vehicle) travel faster than the ring gear.

My theory is that he may have put pressure on the ruler, canceling the big wheels spin and as he moves to the right, the prussure and movement will make the bottom wheels move in that direction, turning then big wheel the opposite, so it's as if it is an illusion
it all has to do with the spools on the bottom. the part of the spool touching the ground has a larger radius (assume 2x) than the part touching the big wheel. this means the wheel only rotates at half the speed of the spools. so when you move the big wheel instead, the spools move twice as fast.
A really cool video and I love the velvety voice and smooth articulation!!
I understand why the cart moves faster than the ruler - due to the larger radius if the outside if the cotton reels than the part that is touched by the big wheel, or in the case of the first video, the paper. But why does the big wheel turn against the direction if the ruler.
I still believe it after seeing all four of the videos - particularly the Christmas sprecial; I just can't get my head round that part!
I assume that the wheel turns against the ruler because the force of the ruler pushing it one way is stronger than the counteracting force from the friction, or is it more complicated than that?
After seeing this many times and after a long time to think about it I STILL cant get my head around it. can you do another vid explaining WHY this happens?
This is basically the same way overdrive works in a transmission. The input shaft spins faster than the output shaft. As long as the ratio between input and output is less than 1:1, then the output will spin faster. If this were the other way around and you had two big wheels being spun by a single small wheel, then it would move slower than the input speed.
no, actually. it doesn't matter how big the big wheel is or how big the small wheel is. what matters is that the inside of the spindle, which is getting turned by the big wheel, has a different radius than the outside of the spindle.
If the inside spindle has a radius r1 and the outside spindle has a radius r2, then the ratio of the cart's speed to the ruler's is
r2/(r2 - r1). If the little wheel were a cylinder without the spindle shape, the car would be jammed.
I think that the energy he needs to exert down on the ruler to generate friction between the ruler and the cart makes it impossible for the big wheel to spin either way. But when he moves the ruler, that friction causes the cotton reels to roll, and once the cotton reels roll one way, the other wheel rolls the opposite way, at the same speed, but due to their size differential, the big wheel turns the little wheels much faster then with just the ruler pushing. Explained.
The entire machine is...upside down. Perhaps it would be easier if...you thought the ground underneath the cottonwheels became the ruler, and the ruler became the ground...Hrrrmmm I am doing a bad job of explaining this. Because the big one wheel is the kinetic energy source it flows with that wheel, and the dual cotton wheels act as gears that increase the speed.
I think i have it. It lies in the two cotton reels. When it is pushed right the to reels turn counter clockwise because the entire machine is moving right. When the reels go counterclockwise that has to mean that the big wheels moves the opposite direction. Being that there are 2 reels and there is one force (ruler) the speed is doubled (in theory). Im kind of proud of myself for thinking of this so if there is a hole in my logic dont be to harsh.
Okay, I've been trying to figure this out with pen and paper for quite a while now...and my brain is as frozen as ice in the middle of Antarctica. Anyone care to explain, in layman's terms, exactly why a) the car moves right and b) the car moves faster than the ruler? I've read the comments, and have just become more confused...
I didn't really watch the whole thing but here's my take. Velocity for the wheel is constant, but the radius of the large wheel is obviously larger than that of the smaller wheels. Velocity for a wheel is radius * angular velocity. The angular velocity is the same for all wheels, but the radius differs. Because the radius is larger for the large wheel, the velocity is larger, making the large wheel move faster. The small wheels have a smaller radius therefore a smaller resultant velocity.Got it?
Big wheel can't spin, cause he has to push down on the cart hard enough for his sideways pulling to actually have an effect, yeah? When the little wheels spin, the big wheel spins at the same speed, but since it's larger then then the little wheels, it makes them spin in the opposite direction much faster. I hope that helped. I hope I'm right.
You are all partially right, even coolaun. ALL the radius(circumference) ratios play a part in making this device move faster than the ruler. Some ratios work better some worse. Just think in terms of your transmission and tire size. Some ratios will not even work because sufficient force might not be transferred to move the device. See the videos "It works" then "8 to 40" and last "40 to 40". Perhaps you'll figure it out.
nadahere, mathematical analysis shows that the size of the blue wheel plays no part in the relation between speed of cart and speed of ruler. This is easily confirmed in an empirical test. If the radius of the ends of the cotton reels is b, the radius of the part of the cotton reels where the blue wheel touches them is a, Vr is the speed of the ruler and Vc that of the cart, then:
Vc = Vr(b/(b-a))
The cart goes faster when the two values are close.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I made a general statement regarding ratios of gears/wheels their velocities, power transfer and non/functionality. I should have clarified that if the center wheel was small the ruler might not be able to transfer enough force to make the device work. Ergo, even the center wheel contributes to making this device move faster than the ruler.
Yes, indeed: when b = a the cart doesn't work! Up to a certain point, the closer a is to b, the faster the cart goes in relation to the ruler (you can see this if you look carefully at panoik's videos). But this can't go on indefinitely: when a is very close to b, the ruler starts to slip. You can see what happens when b is exactly equal to a in avian6's video, "Experiments with a three-roller cart": when the ruler is moved, it just skids over the wheel.
@coolaun When you use Vc=Vr*b/(b-a) you're assuming that Vr is non-zero, AND the no slip conditions that you used to derive this hold. Then, you get infinite speed. Both are not possible simultaneously however. If you calculated everything in the frame of the cart, you'd get V1=V2*b/a where V1 and V2 are the speed of the cart relative to ground and ruler respectively. If b=a, V1=V2 , which is Vc = Vc - Vr or Vr =0. Thus the ruler cannot move if the no-slip constraint has to survive.
The thread spools used as wheels aren't cylinders. Their rims (in contact with the ground) have a larger circumference than their shafts (in contact with the large wheel). I don't think the large wheel is relevant; you could run the ruler over the tops of the spools' shafts for the same effect.
arctic, you're right that the important thing is the relation between the rims and the shafts. However you wouldn't get the same result by running the ruler over the shafts: the essential function of the large wheel is to reverse the direction of rotation (its size is irrelevant). You'd get the same motion without this wheel by running the ruler _under_ the shafts (like in "along the paper faster than the paper"). Running it over the shafts will make the cart advance slower than the ruler.
Because the big wheel has a larger circumference than the smaller wheels, any force acted upon the large wheel will be multiplied to the small ones. While the ruler moves, say 1 inch, the larger wheel also turns 1 inch worth of its circumference. Then this one inch is multiplied onto the small wheels because their circumferences are significantly less allowing more revolutions from that one inch of movement.
Its a basic ides of gears, how big ones are used to make small ones turn faster.
I don't think this is quite right. The small wheels also move one inch worth of their (shaft) circumference. If the wheels were cylinders, the cart would move at the same speed as the ruler. But these are threadspools. The ratio of the wheels' rim circumference to their shaft is about 2X.
.....i think im a pretty smart guy.... i get good grades, but i kno grades dont tell ur intelligence, only how hard u work, i consider myself to be a bit of a philosopher, i think about the world and etc... but this vid makes me think too hard. ME!! the one who thinks about everything from teleporters and if we had them there would need teleporter insurance and teleporter hackers, i think alot, alot! but i cant figure this out...........wtf.....it freaks me out
It works because the ruler is moving the whole cart, not just the top wheel. The ruler moves to the right, pushing the cart to the right; the little wheels move clockwise, the big wheel moves anticlockwise, which pulls it along the ruler faster than the ruler because of simple gearing.
To understand the unexpected direction, you have to stop thinking of the ruler as another wheel in a system of gears. Instead, think of it as an object that is pushing the whole cart via the top wheel
@Forkbringer244 He proved in his other video that the way he's tilting the ruler has nothing to do with it. Sorry buddy, guess you're not as smart as you thought

Okay, I've been trying to figure this out with pen and paper for quite a while now...and my brain is as frozen as ice in the middle of Antarctica. Anyone care to explain, in layman's terms, exactly why a) the car moves right and b) the car moves faster than the ruler? I've read the comments, and have just become more confused...
getmoreatp 2 years ago
I didn't really watch the whole thing but here's my take. Velocity for the wheel is constant, but the radius of the large wheel is obviously larger than that of the smaller wheels. Velocity for a wheel is radius * angular velocity. The angular velocity is the same for all wheels, but the radius differs. Because the radius is larger for the large wheel, the velocity is larger, making the large wheel move faster. The small wheels have a smaller radius therefore a smaller resultant velocity.Got it?
acardwell3 2 years ago

Perhaps you'll figure it out.
nadahere 2 years ago
nadahere, mathematical analysis shows that the size of the blue wheel plays no part in the relation between speed of cart and speed of ruler. This is easily confirmed in an empirical test. If the radius of the ends of the cotton reels is b, the radius of the part of the cotton reels where the blue wheel touches them is a, Vr is the speed of the ruler and Vc that of the cart, then:
Vc = Vr(b/(b-a))
The cart goes faster when the two values are close.

I made a general statement regarding ratios of gears/wheels their velocities, power transfer and non/functionality. I should have clarified that if the center wheel was small the ruler might not be able to transfer enough force to make the device work. Ergo, even the center wheel contributes to making this device move faster than the ruler.
nadahere 2 years ago
But surely in that case, when b=a the velocity of the cart goes to infinity, which is impossible.
iburnedthedinner 2 years ago
Yes, indeed: when b = a the cart doesn't work! Up to a certain point, the closer a is to b, the faster the cart goes in relation to the ruler (you can see this if you look carefully at panoik's videos). But this can't go on indefinitely: when a is very close to b, the ruler starts to slip. You can see what happens when b is exactly equal to a in avian6's video, "Experiments with a three-roller cart": when the ruler is moved, it just skids over the wheel.
coolaun 2 years ago 6
Haha, it's almost like a small scale case of special relativity. Assume a << b otherwise the laws of physics break down!
:p
iburnedthedinner 2 years ago
@coolaun Exactly. If b=a, the no slip condition will not work unless the ruler is not moved at all.

@coolaun woo relative motion two frames of reference's FUN!
StargateMunky 1 year ago
@coolaun now do it by angling the ruler contrary to how you were doing it before.
Pressure.!
StargateMunky 1 year ago
@StargateMunky I've already done that. Have a look at "under the ruler 3: tilting the ruler".
coolaun 1 year ago
@coolaun ftw
StargateMunky 1 year ago
@coolaun When you use Vc=Vr*b/(b-a) you're assuming that Vr is non-zero, AND the no slip conditions that you used to derive this hold. Then, you get infinite speed. Both are not possible simultaneously however. If you calculated everything in the frame of the cart, you'd get V1=V2*b/a where V1 and V2 are the speed of the cart relative to ground and ruler respectively. If b=a, V1=V2 , which is Vc = Vc - Vr or Vr =0. Thus the ruler cannot move if the no-slip constraint has to survive.

@coolaun
equation should be Vc = Vr (b/a)

The thread spools used as wheels aren't cylinders. Their rims (in contact with the ground) have a larger circumference than their shafts (in contact with the large wheel). I don't think the large wheel is relevant; you could run the ruler over the tops of the spools' shafts for the same effect.
arctic123456 2 years ago
arctic, you're right that the important thing is the relation between the rims and the shafts. However you wouldn't get the same result by running the ruler over the shafts: the essential function of the large wheel is to reverse the direction of rotation (its size is irrelevant). You'd get the same motion without this wheel by running the ruler _under_ the shafts (like in "along the paper faster than the paper"). Running it over the shafts will make the cart advance slower than the ruler.

can someone explain to me, in really simple words, how the cart is moving faster than the ruler? im no major science person.... [0=
whitennerday 2 years ago
Because the big wheel has a larger circumference than the smaller wheels, any force acted upon the large wheel will be multiplied to the small ones. While the ruler moves, say 1 inch, the larger wheel also turns 1 inch worth of its circumference. Then this one inch is multiplied onto the small wheels because their circumferences are significantly less allowing more revolutions from that one inch of movement.
Its a basic ides of gears, how big ones are used to make small ones turn faster.
theStadiumUstreamers 2 years ago
I don't think this is quite right. The small wheels also move one inch worth of their (shaft) circumference. If the wheels were cylinders, the cart would move at the same speed as the ruler. But these are threadspools. The ratio of the wheels' rim circumference to their shaft is about 2X.
arctic123456 2 years ago
More pressure is being put one one side, and the wheel has nowhere else to go but where there is less pressure. So it quickly moves the other way.

GCmaster5000 2 years ago
It works because the ruler is moving the whole cart, not just the top wheel. The ruler moves to the right, pushing the cart to the right; the little wheels move clockwise, the big wheel moves anticlockwise, which pulls it along the ruler faster than the ruler because of simple gearing.
To understand the unexpected direction, you have to stop thinking of the ruler as another wheel in a system of gears. Instead, think of it as an object that is pushing the whole cart via the top wheel
