looking for Katarina Witt's "I'm the Only One" piece. early-mid 90's, she skated it for Stars on Ice. Anyone come across it or know where to find it??? It's a piece that I remember being beautiful and hope to see it again. You you know where to find it, let me know plz!

I am not weighing in specifially on whether she used steroids. But she has been named the lead person of the German Olympic Board that is appealing/petitioning to the IOC to have the 2018 Winter Games awarded to Germany (I think the city is Berlin, but I am not sure). If she is a known cheat and steroid user, this is a very wierd appointment for her to get.
@claireshana The East Germans kept extensive records with meticulous efficiency, many of which survived the colapse of the state. Her steriod taking is well documented, she is refered to as the star, she knowingly took the drugs as did sprinters Wockel and Koch. Koch even complained to the state that Wockel was getting stronger doses of steroids because her uncle was president of the pharmaceutical company. Witts family benefited greatly from her co-operation with the state.

I believe that Katarina Witt was, and still is, the greatest female figure skater in the modern era. She used western glamour to her advantage, and, during the 80's, she was a better athlete than Mary Lou Retton was in her sport.The sexiest female athlete too! I love you, Katarina!

She said in an interview, that right before this performance (and right before her performance in the LP at the 1984 Olympics) she had a chocolate bar. She said that Jutta Mueller would have killed her if she knew about it, but she said that it gave her energy and she couldn't resist. You have to love her for that.
@md65000 Loved your comment. Debbie Thomas was never anything more than a second rate skater pushed by the USFSA because of her race. That is the truth. I am not racist-Debbie was a lovely and brilliant girl(now a doctor)but never deserved the intense attentention and support lavished on her by the USFSA. There were many others of her era not treated like the golden goose.

Even though Katarina Witt didn't have all the triple jumps that competitive skaters today have, one thing she has is great SHOWMANSHIP and MAGNETISM, and those are sorely lacking in the young skaters today who are just jumping around and going through the moves like pre-programmed robots.
Steroids _can_ be used to build muscles. But it's not what steroids do. Steroids allow you to train more and harder. Sure Katarina benefitted. She's still a great personality on the ice. Can't take that away from her. But a more interesting question than steroids is perhabs: How many of you would even have remembered the communist financed Witt today, had not rules and economics forced Denise Biellman out of competition skating '81 at the age of only 18?
I'm not arguing here about whether or not she took steroids. Assuming she did, the East German program must have had alot of confidence in its methods. Figure skating takes strength, but any muscle gain can also throw off the delicate balance and precision that a skater needs to execute the jumps. Katarina was their most famous export.... to give her steroids, they must have known exactly how much to give her without causing any excessive development that would have thrown her balance off.
@ForzaAquila If you are asking that question ... than you don't know the sport of figure skating very well. Secondly you make it sound as if cheating in figure skating is O.K. ?? Jumping requires strength, as does the countless run-thrus of one program which figure skaters do, they rely on muscle memory which has a great deal to do with how strong you are, so you can do the run thrus, steriods also help the body to recover faster to enable the run thrus....get it ..
Figure skaters do constant repeats and run thru's of their programs, and rely on muscle memory, so taking steroids would be a definate assest to a skater. More run thru's, better recovery and so on, not to mention strength.

@lodengreeneyes You really have very little understanding of what you are talking about ! what do quads and triple have to do with it ?? Taking steroids... they are taken to improve strength .. so one can train longer and harder, and recover faster... they are also know to have what is called a physco- symatic effect on the brain of feeling invincability. So whether one can do a triple is not an issue, it is an issue of strength and training which is definately an assest.
I'm a fan of Kim Yu na and a friend told me to check out Witt.....she was right....Kim Yu na is fantastic....but WITT is THE QUEEN on ICE....damn this woman makes it look so easy!
This was a glorious performance! Absolutely deserving of the gold. Katarina was exquisite, dramatic and gorgeous. Manley was athletic and dynamic but far from interesting or captivating. Thomas seemed deflated. Ito a great jumper but no story behind her skate. KATARINA ABSOLUTELY DESERVED THE GOLD. It wasn't even close. Viva Katarina!
Please be civilized persons, just talk/write without swearing. It's easy and natural. I think Ito winning gold would be the great thing, but she was out of the top 3 going into the long program. And there was the figures portion, which makes winning more dificult. I think the reality and best thing would be Ito second or first place in the long program, but then Manley winning the gold overall. These two were the victims, but they were clearly the best women that night.

Witt was beautiful, glamorous, sexy; the costume was hot, the choreography was right on, BUT.... this is a sport, the Olympics for fucks sake!!!!! All posing and vanity. Watch her worlds free program from a year before (1987) to see what she's really capable of. I would have had Ito win gold, Manley Silver, Witt Bronze, and Thomas 6th or 7th. Let's face it, Thomas's free skate was a disaster.
I have no idea what your talking about and neither do you. I only searched for 'battle of the carmens' because it is a piece of ice skating history for me. The reason I made that comment is because Debi wore a cat suit for her short program, which ultimately led to a new rule that women were not allowed to wear pants or trousers any more, however it should also be pointed out that Katarina's revealing costume also led to new rules about costumes as well, and personally I wanted Debi to win.

@deeprose4 Yes, it was Debi Thomas' 'cat suit' that showed all and was frankly unflattering -- emphasizing every muscle and then some on Thomas. I'd thought that was the final straw that cracked down on the costume rules, not Witt's 'dresses'.
@lodengreeneyes according to wikipedia, katarina's showgirl costume worn for her short program was considered too revealing and led to changes in the ISU for women to wear more modest clothing, including skirts. However, based on the sheer volume of comments you have made here today, you must think of yourself as some expert.
@lodengreeneyes It is pretty clear from every comment written here by yourself that you only believe your own opinions, so it does not matter what anyone else says. Katarina's costumes were the main reason for the changes in the rules, regardless of what you believe or think to be correct.

@deeprose4 Any idea how Debi Thomas got away with that terrible one-piece leotard 'cat suit', which you negatively remarked about in an earlier comment? I wonder why that wasn't the 'final straw' when it came to bad taste? She would have looked so much nicer in a more classic figure skating outfit which may have made a difference in the judges mind (knowing how they can be capricious with their scores).
@lodengreeneyes Both Debi and Katarina 'got away' with their costumes because the rules changed AFTER the Olympics in 1988, due to the rules regarding costumes not being clearly defined, at that point in time judges couldn't deduct for costumes, the rule then dubbed as the 'katarina rule' states women must wear skirts, no trousers, no bare midriffs and buttocks must be covered. In addition there are rules for men, and deductions of 1/10 to 2/10 of a point will be made if not followed.
@lodengreeneyes and I agree one hundred percent, all skaters, including Debi and Katarina look much better when wearing more modest costumes. I would rather see 'classic' skating dresses over some of the risque' costumes we have today. The rules about costumes have become somewhat more relaxed in recent years, even after the 'Katarina rule' was put in place, especially when you consider some of the costumes worn by ice dance teams.
I know that Kim Yuna just win the Olympic champion, but does everything has to be about her? These days no matter which skater's video I Iwatch, there are Korean people posting comments about how great Kim Yuna is or compare her to the skater in the vedio. People watch these vedios because they just want to see the persons in them，there is nothing to do with KIM, so just leave us alone！！
This was outstanding.. The music selection was perfect for that time as well as her executing the choreography so technically and beautifully.. Best skate up until Yuna Kim this past month

I think figures should be added back into the sport. I also believe that the winter games as a whole is crap! Figure skating is the only thing worth watching although I did watch a little luge. Skiers should have to perform all the types of skiing and the best over all gets the metal, sort of like in gymnastics. Let's face it curling is not a sport, it's a game!

a bit of hostory: as a result of this costume, new Olympic rules were written. Thigh-high cut panties were banned because too much of her posterier was showing. It is still known as the "Katarina Rule" to this day, even though it is common fashion now. This was very risque at the time. Pictures of her bum (she wore flesh-coloured tights of course) were all over the papers the next day, and EVERY man in the world wanted her. she could have been a movie start, but she's dumb as a post.

The quality of skating was much, much better in 1988 than it is now. The current batch are lacklustre. Not even Yuna Kim can hold a candle to Katrina...
No way, you can't compare the two. Kim Yu Na would have an upperhand in difficulty of jumps since figure skating has progressed over the years and standards for technical difficulty have been raised--that's not to put down Katarina's skill in any way, it's just how evolution happens. In terms of personality and artistry, you really can't compare the two.

I disagree. I think the skaters this year are dull compared to the skaters of the past. I think the quality of the performances has declined overall. If one compares this performance to Yuna's long program, which I watched today, Katarina would win. Yuna's a good technical skater, but I think her performance lacked the energy, passion, and elegance of Katatrina's. Just my opinion...
I agree with you. Yuna has grace, artistry and athketism, and also perfect, but she is not as passionate, dramatic nor expressive as katrina. maybe because she's too young... I think this will change as she ages.
nevertheless, both of them are great athletes, and they cannot be compared. katrina is twenty years ago, and of course, ppl tend to have more difficult routines from the past.

I don't agree. It's a good performance for the time, but it's not up to par with the artistry and athleticism of modern skaters such as Yu-Na. Katarina's choreography was mostly just posing--not the best fluidity. But she was the best on the scene at the time.
It's amazing how she impersonates the character... I'm amazed! And living in a country where the winter sports are not so popular, I wish I could've seen her before...
It doesn't matter to me if she took drugs or not. No amount of drugs will give someone the grace that she had on the ice. THAT'S why she was s winner.

I'd like to see body builders skate, actually scrub that, I wouldn't. I'll tell you what steroids don't do and I used to take them. They don't improve your co-ordination or make you skate with consummate grace and artistry. They don't make you more technically proficient. Katarina was a brilliant skater from a very early age and went on to be arguably the greatest female skater of all time. Deal with it.
If it were up to me, I would have done the following to make the program more "balanced". Move the first double axel to the slow part of the program (near where her butterfly jump was). This would add heft to the slow part and also give her more time to add some rotations to her first combination spin. Also, in the slow part, add maybe a short spiral position or Ina Bauer, again to give it a little more substance. Finally, she needed to do the triple loop. But it is very artisitic.

viclcook, yes very big cheater is Marion Jones. But many say the big cheater is really lying with the usa federation who supply the substance because they are so defensive especially today with wanting to be powerful in any fields and ranking. I think usa has always had great runners, but they have now many cases and scandal of banned substance. american runners must always be examined and with asterisk whenever they appear. It is unfortunate ( really it is) but the IOC really only seem care about the money and keeping themselves away from controversey - rather than fare play. They have a rule and if 8 years have passed - even if they cheating is know they will not do anything about it. In the case of East Germany can you imagine how many medals would had have to been returned and records been erased. I still think they should have done it - but it would be a massive undertaking and blow to the games.

Even though Katarina Witt didn't have all the triple jumps that competitive skaters today have, one thing she has is great SHOWMANSHIP and MAGNETISM, and those are sorely lacking in the young skaters today who are just jumping around and going through the moves like pre-programmed robots.

Steroids _can_ be used to build muscles. But it's not what steroids do. Steroids allow you to train more and harder. Sure Katarina benefitted. She's still a great personality on the ice. Can't take that away from her. But a more interesting question than steroids is perhabs: How many of you would even have remembered the communist financed Witt today, had not rules and economics forced Denise Biellman out of competition skating '81 at the age of only 18?

I'm not arguing here about whether or not she took steroids. Assuming she did, the East German program must have had alot of confidence in its methods. Figure skating takes strength, but any muscle gain can also throw off the delicate balance and precision that a skater needs to execute the jumps. Katarina was their most famous export.... to give her steroids, they must have known exactly how much to give her without causing any excessive development that would have thrown her balance off.

@ForzaAquila If you are asking that question ... than you don't know the sport of figure skating very well. Secondly you make it sound as if cheating in figure skating is O.K. ?? Jumping requires strength, as does the countless run-thrus of one program which figure skaters do, they rely on muscle memory which has a great deal to do with how strong you are, so you can do the run thrus, steriods also help the body to recover faster to enable the run thrus....get it ..

Figure skaters do constant repeats and run thru's of their programs, and rely on muscle memory, so taking steroids would be a definate assest to a skater. More run thru's, better recovery and so on, not to mention strength.

Taking steroids... they are taken to improve strength .. so one can train longer and harder, and recover faster... they are also know to have what is called a physco- symatic effect on the brain of feeling invincability. So whether one can do a triple is not an issue, it is an issue of strength and training which is definately an assest.

This was a glorious performance! Absolutely deserving of the gold. Katarina was exquisite, dramatic and gorgeous. Manley was athletic and dynamic but far from interesting or captivating. Thomas seemed deflated. Ito a great jumper but no story behind her skate. KATARINA ABSOLUTELY DESERVED THE GOLD. It wasn't even close. Viva Katarina!

Please be civilized persons, just talk/write without swearing. It's easy and natural. I think Ito winning gold would be the great thing, but she was out of the top 3 going into the long program. And there was the figures portion, which makes winning more dificult. I think the reality and best thing would be Ito second or first place in the long program, but then Manley winning the gold overall. These two were the victims, but they were clearly the best women that night.

Witt was beautiful, glamorous, sexy; the costume was hot, the choreography was right on, BUT.... this is a sport, the Olympics for fucks sake!!!!! All posing and vanity. Watch her worlds free program from a year before (1987) to see what she's really capable of. I would have had Ito win gold, Manley Silver, Witt Bronze, and Thomas 6th or 7th. Let's face it, Thomas's free skate was a disaster.

I have no idea what your talking about and neither do you. I only searched for 'battle of the carmens' because it is a piece of ice skating history for me. The reason I made that comment is because Debi wore a cat suit for her short program, which ultimately led to a new rule that women were not allowed to wear pants or trousers any more, however it should also be pointed out that Katarina's revealing costume also led to new rules about costumes as well, and personally I wanted Debi to win.

@deeprose4 Yes, it was Debi Thomas' 'cat suit' that showed all and was frankly unflattering -- emphasizing every muscle and then some on Thomas. I'd thought that was the final straw that cracked down on the costume rules, not Witt's 'dresses'.

I hadn't found these older videos until recently thus the comments -- which are mostly comment *back* to comments made to me.

I wonder why that wasn't the 'final straw' when it came to bad taste? She would have looked so much nicer in a more classic figure skating outfit which may have made a difference in the judges mind (knowing how they can be capricious with their scores).

@lodengreeneyes Both Debi and Katarina 'got away' with their costumes because the rules changed AFTER the Olympics in 1988, due to the rules regarding costumes not being clearly defined, at that point in time judges couldn't deduct for costumes, the rule then dubbed as the 'katarina rule' states women must wear skirts, no trousers, no bare midriffs and buttocks must be covered. In addition there are rules for men, and deductions of 1/10 to 2/10 of a point will be made if not followed.

@lodengreeneyes and I agree one hundred percent, all skaters, including Debi and Katarina look much better when wearing more modest costumes. I would rather see 'classic' skating dresses over some of the risque' costumes we have today. The rules about costumes have become somewhat more relaxed in recent years, even after the 'Katarina rule' was put in place, especially when you consider some of the costumes worn by ice dance teams.

I think figures should be added back into the sport. I also believe that the winter games as a whole is crap! Figure skating is the only thing worth watching although I did watch a little luge. Skiers should have to perform all the types of skiing and the best over all gets the metal, sort of like in gymnastics. Let's face it curling is not a sport, it's a game!

a bit of hostory: as a result of this costume, new Olympic rules were written. Thigh-high cut panties were banned because too much of her posterier was showing. It is still known as the "Katarina Rule" to this day, even though it is common fashion now. This was very risque at the time. Pictures of her bum (she wore flesh-coloured tights of course) were all over the papers the next day, and EVERY man in the world wanted her. she could have been a movie start, but she's dumb as a post.

No way, you can't compare the two. Kim Yu Na would have an upperhand in difficulty of jumps since figure skating has progressed over the years and standards for technical difficulty have been raised--that's not to put down Katarina's skill in any way, it's just how evolution happens. In terms of personality and artistry, you really can't compare the two.

I disagree. I think the skaters this year are dull compared to the skaters of the past. I think the quality of the performances has declined overall. If one compares this performance to Yuna's long program, which I watched today, Katarina would win. Yuna's a good technical skater, but I think her performance lacked the energy, passion, and elegance of Katatrina's. Just my opinion...

I agree with you. Yuna has grace, artistry and athketism, and also perfect, but she is not as passionate, dramatic nor expressive as katrina. maybe because she's too young... I think this will change as she ages.
nevertheless, both of them are great athletes, and they cannot be compared. katrina is twenty years ago, and of course, ppl tend to have more difficult routines from the past.

I don't agree. It's a good performance for the time, but it's not up to par with the artistry and athleticism of modern skaters such as Yu-Na. Katarina's choreography was mostly just posing--not the best fluidity. But she was the best on the scene at the time.

I'd like to see body builders skate, actually scrub that, I wouldn't. I'll tell you what steroids don't do and I used to take them. They don't improve your co-ordination or make you skate with consummate grace and artistry. They don't make you more technically proficient. Katarina was a brilliant skater from a very early age and went on to be arguably the greatest female skater of all time. Deal with it.

If it were up to me, I would have done the following to make the program more "balanced". Move the first double axel to the slow part of the program (near where her butterfly jump was). This would add heft to the slow part and also give her more time to add some rotations to her first combination spin. Also, in the slow part, add maybe a short spiral position or Ina Bauer, again to give it a little more substance. Finally, she needed to do the triple loop. But it is very artisitic.

But many say the big cheater is really lying with the usa federation who supply the substance because they are so defensive especially today with wanting to be powerful in any fields and ranking. I think usa has always had great runners, but they have now many cases and scandal of banned substance. american runners must always be examined and with asterisk whenever they appear. It is unfortunate ( really it is) but the IOC really only seem care about the money and keeping themselves away from controversey - rather than fare play. They have a rule and if 8 years have passed - even if they cheating is know they will not do anything about it. In the case of East Germany can you imagine how many medals would had have to been returned and records been erased. I still think they should have done it - but it would be a massive undertaking and blow to the games.
