  • How is this "Perfect Quality"?

  • If only all women looked like this when they turn 50. World would be a heaven.

  • It's a LEGEND!!

  • A fantastic German machine... Wish my German PVD machine was at least 10% as perfect as Katarina ;)

  • I say forget everybody else. Here I would only concentrate on Katarinas' videos only.

I always admired her performance and beauty. "She is devine," as one of my dance instructors told me recently.

  • One of my most memorable sporting moment. Katerina's performance is only made more shiny, by Debbie Thomas already excellent performance previously. Amazing moment.

  • Kati Witt was the best of the best ! Very beautiful skater.

  • How can you not love this woman??!! Gorgeous, athletic but feminine, NOt on steroids. She KILLED it here, she squashed that monkey Debbie Thomas, and it was awesome!! I'll take an East German over a sistuh anyday!!

  • @cwinifredg yeah, and debbie thomas is an orthopedic surgeon now. what are you doing?

  • 素敵っすぅ~。当時を思い出しますね。

  • da war die ja noch schlank und von ihren dicken titten is auch noch nix zu sehen

  • @888886 spaßti

  • she did playboy

  • @bufalosabresrock4444 So what?

  • Katarina Witt always was the best ! I always adored her skating style. Sehr schoen !

  • OMG, her jumps are absolutely gorgeous! So lithe and graceful, it's truly amazing to watch.

  • .id say that the figure skating generation now is better than previous more artistic and difficulties when it comes on style

  • I was named after her! she's a really good figure skater ! go Katarina!

  • @fanfreak3399 Me too! My dad said he thought the name was so pretty so he named me it. LOL, it's spelled differently because they wanted it to be unique so it's spelled Catarina

  • @ShadesXPants Well Our Name is generally spelt: Caterina. My Aunt Spells mine Katerina when it's Katarina

  • @fanfreak3399 Yeah but due to everyone alling us Ka-trina i go by Nina

  • @fanfreak3399 My name is also spelled Katarina. People always assume it's spelled with a C or they call me Katrina.

  • One of the absolutly best competitions in skating ever !

No chance for Manley, Thomas and Ito and all the others.

    Danke, Kati !

  • @westfaner NO woman who uses steroids can look that good in the pages of PLAYBOY, besides I think that for anyone to think that steroids would be used in figure skating is using very bad logic. Come on, dude, think about it!

  • The very rootable darling of the ice, Katarine Witt

  • She was the only good thing the ugly DDR system ever produced.

  • @SUSuess You are an idiot, I have never seen such a stupid statements !!!

  • she won that 10 seconds before the start.

    That means authority.

The only man I know who has that is James Heatley from Metallica.

And by the way. I´m not from East Germany.

  • @SUSuess it´s james hetfield. but good try.

  • wanted Roz to win.

  • @mnichols1959 Roz retired in 1984

  • has katarina witt ever done a triple lutz in her career?

  • Wow! she just soooooo amazing!

  • she skates to "Carmen" so perfectly because she captures the essence of the character...great vid!!!

  • ...and then Debbie Thomas came out and fell apart like a two-dollar suitcase - and Katarina won the gold.

  • @md65000 Loved your comment. Debbie Thomas was never anything more than a second rate skater pushed by the USFSA because of her race. That is the truth. I am not racist-Debbie was a lovely and brilliant girl(now a doctor)but never deserved the intense attentention and support lavished on her by the USFSA. There were many others of her era not treated like the golden goose.

    Former USFSA Member

  • @markbob120 surya bonaly of france was dissed too.

  • @20YRoldembryo As she should have been. Surya skated like a chimp on ice-no line, no style. On second thought I have seen chimps skate better!

  • You should be ashamed at a comment like that, you are a disgrace

  • @20YRoldembryo You should be ashamed at a comment like that, you are a disgrace to humanity

  • Those who keep quarrelling about steroids-yes-steroids-no in front of this do really not deserve all this beauty. Thank you Katarina!

  • Katarina Witt!! my best skater with Queen yuna !! though Katarina Witt's skills were little bit immature than these days super skaters, u don't have to compare her with contemporary skaters.. she's still a legend..

  • Even though Katarina Witt didn't have all the triple jumps that competitive skaters today have, one thing she has is great SHOWMANSHIP and MAGNETISM, and those are sorely lacking in the young skaters today who are just jumping around and going through the moves like pre-programmed robots.

  • @ViVi80 I agree. She is SO magnetic! I've never seen another skater who skates with as much fire as does!

  • Steroids _can_ be used to build muscles. But it's not what steroids do. Steroids allow you to train more and harder. Sure Katarina benefitted. She's still a great personality on the ice. Can't take that away from her. But a more interesting question than steroids is perhabs: How many of you would even have remembered the communist financed Witt today, had not rules and economics forced Denise Biellman out of competition skating '81 at the age of only 18?

  • I'm not arguing here about whether or not she took steroids. Assuming she did, the East German program must have had alot of confidence in its methods. Figure skating takes strength, but any muscle gain can also throw off the delicate balance and precision that a skater needs to execute the jumps. Katarina was their most famous export.... to give her steroids, they must have known exactly how much to give her without causing any excessive development that would have thrown her balance off.

  • @jubbadupa how does steroids have anything to do with this sport? oO

  • @ForzaAquila If you are asking that question ... than you don't know the sport of figure skating very well. Secondly you make it sound as if cheating in figure skating is O.K. ?? Jumping requires strength, as does the countless run-thrus of one program which figure skaters do, they rely on muscle memory which has a great deal to do with how strong you are, so you can do the run thrus, steriods also help the body to recover faster to enable the run thrus....get it ..

  • @jubbadupa yea ok you're right i dont know much about figure skating. but frankly i would choose calming drugs over muscle boost drugs ... dunno...

  • Figure skaters do constant repeats and run thru's of their programs, and rely on muscle memory, so taking steroids would be a definate assest to a skater. More run thru's, better recovery and so on, not to mention strength.

  • Oh you watched Doping for Gold ... and your an expert now londengreeneyes, and because there was no mention of Witt, well she could have taken steroids, and if she did it had to be minimal compared to the track athletes and swimmers, and she only did it, because she had to.... Idiot !!!!! You are so uninformed and really have no business comment on what you obviously know so little about.

  • @lodengreeneyes You really have very little understanding of what you are talking about ! what do quads and triple have to do with it ?? Taking steroids... they are taken to improve strength .. so one can train longer and harder, and recover faster... they are also know to have what is called a physco- symatic effect on the brain of feeling invincability. So whether one can do a triple is not an issue, it is an issue of strength and training which is definately an assest.

  • @yescanto Meant to type "feeling of invincibility" , sorry

  • I'm a fan of Kim Yu na and a friend told me to check out Witt.....she was right....Kim Yu na is fantastic....but WITT is THE QUEEN on ICE....damn this woman makes it look so easy!

  • A big whoops at 2:43.

Not a gold-medal worthy performance, but it makes sense since she did so well in the CF and the SP. And her makeup makes her face look rather scary.

  • This was a glorious performance! Absolutely deserving of the gold. Katarina was exquisite, dramatic and gorgeous. Manley was athletic and dynamic but far from interesting or captivating. Thomas seemed deflated. Ito a great jumper but no story behind her skate. KATARINA ABSOLUTELY DESERVED THE GOLD. It wasn't even close. Viva Katarina!

  • omg! that costume! oooo the 80s!

  • Please be civilized persons, just talk/write without swearing. It's easy and natural. I think Ito winning gold would be the great thing, but she was out of the top 3 going into the long program. And there was the figures portion, which makes winning more dificult. I think the reality and best thing would be Ito second or first place in the long program, but then Manley winning the gold overall. These two were the victims, but they were clearly the best women that night.

  • That was Great!

Katarina Witt ist my Hometown hero.

For that i wake up in the Night, local time after 03.00.

  • QUEEN WITT!!!

  • Midori Ito deseved the Gold Medal in 1988 Calgary Olympics

  • @Basileus1983 Manley deserved the gold, Ito the silver.

  • Enchanting.

  • i am named after her [my name is Katarina]

  • She is amazing. <3

  • カルメンをスケートで表現。22歳のカテリーナ

  • Look it Kataroida !

  • her program fits perfectly to the music

  • every move is perfectly timed with the music. pure art.

  • so extremly beautiful

  • Maybe Debi Thomas would have won if she hadn't worn that ridiculous cat suit? Katarina had the superior performance.

  • i dont know how despaired you searched for reasons why she didn´t won. thats really ridiculous

  • I have no idea what your talking about and neither do you. I only searched for 'battle of the carmens' because it is a piece of ice skating history for me. The reason I made that comment is because Debi wore a cat suit for her short program, which ultimately led to a new rule that women were not allowed to wear pants or trousers any more, however it should also be pointed out that Katarina's revealing costume also led to new rules about costumes as well, and personally I wanted Debi to win.

  • Comment removed

  • @lodengreeneyes according to wikipedia, katarina's showgirl costume worn for her short program was considered too revealing and led to changes in the ISU for women to wear more modest clothing, including skirts. However, based on the sheer volume of comments you have made here today, you must think of yourself as some expert.

  • @lodengreeneyes It is pretty clear from every comment written here by yourself that you only believe your own opinions, so it does not matter what anyone else says. Katarina's costumes were the main reason for the changes in the rules, regardless of what you believe or think to be correct.

  • @lodengreeneyes oh, and just so you know, it became known as the 'katarina rule' when the rules changed regarding the costumes, thanks to her showgirl costume, but someone like yourself should have already known that.

  • @lodengreeneyes Both Debi and Katarina 'got away' with their costumes because the rules changed AFTER the Olympics in 1988, due to the rules regarding costumes not being clearly defined, at that point in time judges couldn't deduct for costumes, the rule then dubbed as the 'katarina rule' states women must wear skirts, no trousers, no bare midriffs and buttocks must be covered. In addition there are rules for men, and deductions of 1/10 to 2/10 of a point will be made if not followed.

  • @lodengreeneyes and I agree one hundred percent, all skaters, including Debi and Katarina look much better when wearing more modest costumes. I would rather see 'classic' skating dresses over some of the risque' costumes we have today. The rules about costumes have become somewhat more relaxed in recent years, even after the 'Katarina rule' was put in place, especially when you consider some of the costumes worn by ice dance teams.

  • @deeprose4 agree debi's outfit wasnt the most flattering

  • You are so right!

  • Comment removed

  • Katarina's flare, drama, & presence are undeniable and sadly show how badly the decline in figure skating has become.

  • No medals for some people's grammar! and the winter games are not 'crap'.

  • It is amazing how much more difficult the routines seem today than they did even in 1988.

  • hello Kitty,

die Frage ist nicht dein Ernst, oder?

Natürlich ist sie Deutsche und war doch jetzt in Vancouver auch als Expertin dabei...

  • i have the same initials as her!! my name is katerina wurster and i am german. idk...is katerina witt german too? but anyways, nice video. beautiful!!

  • охринеть х)

  • People bicker about who's better. Katarina Witt dominated her time as evidenced by her 2 Olympic gold medals. Enough said.

  • @mhou24 you're so wrong. the judges are always biased and giving the gold medal to the wrong person is something we keep witnessing, again and again.

  • of course this was a statment 1, 2 and three. However ridiculas your replies are, No2 was perfection

  • beautiiiiiiiiii

  • all these negative responses to my comments over a costume??? These are facts people; look it up.

  • Did she do a spiral sequence in this? I didn't catch it...

  • She's so beautiful...

    It looks like she's flying.

  • @HINCHCLIFFE69 Remember the faux romance with Tomba the Italian skier? It was a fun olympics.

  • .. I had forgotten about that! but it does remind me that it came out later Kurt Browning was involved with her too...

I'm beginning to think Katarina is on here herself with all these negative responses.... why you?

  • No way, you can't compare the two. Kim Yu Na would have an upperhand in difficulty of jumps since figure skating has progressed over the years and standards for technical difficulty have been raised--that's not to put down Katarina's skill in any way, it's just how evolution happens. In terms of personality and artistry, you really can't compare the two.

  • I agree with you. Yuna has grace, artistry and athketism, and also perfect, but she is not as passionate, dramatic nor expressive as katrina. maybe because she's too young... I think this will change as she ages.

nevertheless, both of them are great athletes, and they cannot be compared. katrina is twenty years ago, and of course, ppl tend to have more difficult routines from the past.

  • I don't agree. It's a good performance for the time, but it's not up to par with the artistry and athleticism of modern skaters such as Yu-Na. Katarina's choreography was mostly just posing--not the best fluidity. But she was the best on the scene at the time.

  • I don't need to 'take notes,' what I was saying is, it's nearly all opinion. You prefer one way and I prefer another.

  • @sunsetsncarcrashes Okay :) I wasn't trying to be to rude; please don't take that way. I agree; it is a matter of opinion...

  • Oh yawn with all the Kim Yuna talk! She's a different generation than Katarina! Just shut up about it.. The sport has moved on... GEEZUS

  • @claireshana

I totally believe it, but I wonder how much of that confidence is from the placebo effect?

  • Comment removed

  • It's amazing how she impersonates the character... I'm amazed! And living in a country where the winter sports are not so popular, I wish I could've seen her before...

  • Katharina war und ist top... genial

  • It doesn't matter to me if she took drugs or not. No amount of drugs will give someone the grace that she had on the ice. THAT'S why she was s winner.

  • what a beautiful girl!

  • Comment removed

  • good for you !

  • @indiatree It is so lame for someone to act like she didn't take performance enhancing drugs when she did, and even lamer to ask for proof and act like you can't find any reference to it, when it is all over the the net. She was willing and tried very hard to have her files made private when the wall came down, even I remember those reports from news broadcasts, if you didn't see them, there is nothing that can be done, stop acting like everyone that mentions it, is crazy, because they r not !

  • Well, I never knew about it and never saw any articles about it. If there is evidence, they should just take her medals away. I don't understand why they don't if she has admitted it.

  • It is unfortunate ( really it is) but the IOC really only seem care about the money and keeping themselves away from controversey - rather than fare play. They have a rule and if 8 years have passed - even if they cheating is know they will not do anything about it. In the case of East Germany can you imagine how many medals would had have to been returned and records been erased. I still think they should have done it - but it would be a massive undertaking and blow to the games.

  • @Rapsidious Absolutely, I know ???

  • Perfekt! Sie ist Angel. I love Kati!!! Jest absolutnie pięka.Nawet po 22 latach.A może nawet piekniejsza..

  • Get a life ... it is no one responsibility to find any article or proof for you. If you were serious you would be offering more than $100 try $1000. I just punched in her name and steriods and a whole shit load came up. It is Old news !! 21 years and counting ...

  • I never knew about it or saw anything about it. I saw the articles about her Stasi files, but never saw anything about the steroids in there. If there is evidence, they should just take her medals away. That should solve things.

  • Why are you so outraged? Like you said, IT HAPPENED TWENTY YEARS AGO!!! NEWSFLASH: Not everything you read on the internet is true. You probably learned that after you gave your credit card number to that Nigerian prince that e-mailed you...
