  • where can i find/download the om2007.2 image for my gta02v5??

    link please!!

  • where can i buy this

  • Looks cool, it may fit great with Android, Slackware or then simply Openmoko Freerunner. That's the beauty of this phone, it is customizable, opensource and it has many of the advantages Linux have. You have the choice over your phone :D

  • I would buy one if it would be slimmer :-(. I hate nothing more than a phone or mp3 player which don't fit in my pants pocket.

  • @LunaticQuutamo lol something which dosent fit in your pants xD

  • location, location, location

  • does the openmoko neo free runner work as a phone now or do you have to program it yourself? If it does operate as a phone then what network do they use? Pardon my ignorance in this subject?

  • I got my Freeruner preinstalled. It is easy to phone with it as a normal phone. I phone with it often and write SMS, no problem. But you can't use all carriers. I use T-Mobile and it works great. Klarmobil does not works in the moment. It is still under development, but u can use it as a phone, yes.

  • Any GSM carrier would work, I think you just put the SIM card in.

  • I ordered one of these and can't wait to get it. The only thing I'm not terribly wild about is the oval case. I may venture to try to make my own, or at least a square case that goes over the whole phone.

  • Yay! Finally a phone running entirely on Free Software with the freedom to program and alter the software to do anything i like. One question, is it possible for openmoko phone to be bugged or used as listening device? I heard that many phones running proprietary software contains backdoors where cops or FBIs can secretly tap the phone's mic as listening device even when off. Bet damn sure the Openmoko running free software is free from backdoors, i hope.

  • Well not just free, but opensource. Meaning the sourcecode is readily available for review by anyone. I imagine if there were any "backdoors" it would be readily apparent. Aside from that, I can't imagine a company based on this concept of free/open/anti-control would even considering obliging any requests for such a feature from government officials.

  • It's not all open source. They can't open source parts of the AT commands which require FCC approval.

  • So if you write your own operating system or programs how would you be able to get software updates???

  • Write your own?

  • They'll probably create a palm sized printer next, so that they can connect it to these phone/computers.

  • Finally, a phone I can program that won't ring when there are unrecognized numbers. The most fucking obvious thing, and nobody produces it.

  • ....if you dont like it dont buy it, its in development. Also its open source, I could really care less, but OSS is usually cheap and better. Have fun with vista ;)

  • the point of commenting is to give an honest opinion about it. He may not like it but he has a valid reason not to--although he could be a little less brash about it.

  • But as nuke said, it's under development. It's clearly said that this phone is not yet ready for use by the general public. The website even clearly states that the softwares incompleteness allows for only a 1 day battery life. I feel you should be properly informed before calling something stupid.

  • linux isnt slow, its just that this phone is still in development, the software can be updated ofcourse, the only difference is that the user themseves can do it, unless your a lazy wintendo user, where you just moan and moan until a more expensive "better" model comes out, if thats the case buy an HTC phone will the almighty windows mobile bullshit on it.

  • > Stupid, because if you want a portable

    > handheld computer, you'd buy just that.

    > This phone's hardware is slow and running

    > slow Linux on top of it isn't going to fare

    > any better.

It's 400 Mhz AMD processor, moron - that's MORE than enough for Linux, which runs fine on computers that run at 20 Mhz.

YOU don't know *anything* about embedded uCLinux. Nothing. Don't comment on industries which you don't work in.

  • Are there any other interesting linux/open source phones ready for users yet? I've looked around the internet for a fair bit, without any result.

  • might be for linux geek-users. It is linux and it will become more and more userfriendly, but it still will take some months or years. Be patient..

  • Motorola Ming (A1200) runs Linux, however it isn't open source. Lots of people are hacking on it though and some have got OpenMoko and Android running on it.

  • As like me with the a780, hehehe :D

But I have just ordered the A6 freerunner so one or two weeks later I will have it :P

  • use mine

  • So I take it you don't like Iphone either?

  • I can't believe my comment got trashed. Anyway, I just tried the iPhone. The calendar function SUCKS, and entering text is AGONIZINGLY SLOW, even after a few days after I got faster. Entering text on my old Treo was LOTS faster. So no, I don't like the iPhone.

  • this phone has its flaws too but I agree I have one of these and my brother has an iphone the iphone belongs in the trash. I'd still rather have an iphone than any windows mobile device though.

  • the phone boot way to slow but it is a great idea

  • stupid comment and not even very long :') waste of my time

    imo

  • you could easily add a camera to this phone if you used your brain. it's open source, it can be made to do anything.

  • i can think one easy way to do it for example. see that usb port? I've seen portable USB cameras on sale on various parts of the internet that are about the size of a quarter. Just hook up one of those, write or even download a driver for it, and you have a camera.

Although really, if you put your mind to it and with enough effort you could probably hack the hardware and put a camera inside the phone if you're really dedicated enough.

  • anyway, since this phone can basically be programmed to do whatever you want I'd say it's worth more than what you pay for.

  • Only if the USB controller support Host mode. Neo1973 supports USB host but not sure about Neo FreeRunner.

  • neo FreRunner supports host mode..

    :)

  • i wish there they release this with a "multi-touch sensor" screen. in any case imma gonna buy it! :D

  • si ma mi sembra lentissimo all'avvio

  • é fantastico! LO VOGLIO!!!!

  • the best phone i think... totally open... if you qant to install a camera(for example) you ca do it... ah it's possible to make phone calls with skype... like a computer! with wi-fi connection!

  • install a camera??

    how ???

If i can do that i will buy it just when it comes out

  • this phone is great for those of us who can write our own apps... no looming threat of ad's like android os, either... the iphone market can't claim to include folks like us

  • Yep who the hell would wanna buy third party apps on itunes when we could download them for free. This phone is opensource

  • Yes and the Apple SDK isnt open and there are tons of rules restricting what you can develop with the SDK so dont expect other than games.

  • This phone is so awesum! Based on openembedded and fully opensource, I WANT!

  • programmers' phone. nice for anyone who knows python,linux,etc..

  • The freerunner can be used by anyone!

Neo1973 gta01 is the developer edition if you were thinking of that one...

  • I think he means that you can get the full experience of the phone if you know how to code. Otherwise you would think about it as just another smartphone.

  • confused

  • Web browser, media player, calendar, etc...

It's an open platform so it can do whatever you can do.. or me.. or that guy over there.. Know bash ? python ? ruby ?! java?!?! gtk ? Then use your mad skillz and build-in GPS to write some cool real-life Tron game etc.. lots of opportunities.

  • o ok! thanks!

  • And why exactly does it suck?!

Wifi, 3d accelerors, 2d/3d support, touch screen and the best of it all it is Open Source!

  • it's a phone that can be programmed to do anything. if that is too much for you to understand then you're the one who sucks.
