And yes, the tax codes are a major reason for the gap between the uninsured and the insured. When an employer provides insurance, it is not considered income and therefore not subject to income taxes. This is why employers prefer in most situations to provide benefits instead of wages. They have to pay additional taxes above what you see on your pay stub. Those who purchase insurance on their own, have to do it post tax. The best they can hope for is a tax deductible.
So yes, our tax system discriminates against the unemployed, the self employed, the under employed, and those making minimum wage. Maybe you should do a little research into these subjects before opening your mouth.

I spend (with several chronic diseases mind you) about $1,000/year on my health care. By paying out of pocket, I save approximately $3,000/year. If you times that by twenty years, that comes out $60,000. By the time I'm 72, that will be $120,000. It is not rocket science. Insurance is nothing more than a lottery where the bureaucrats take out their admin fee.

These Democrats in Congress have now helped AARP to throw Senior Citizens under the bus with this awful bill, which will cut Medicare funding so much that Seniors will have to use the Medigap supplemental coverage. Conveniently for AARP (big donor of the DNC) AARP gets a huge amount of their funding from these Medigap insurance plans.

If I am down on my luck for a few months and have no health insurance, why is it so bad that people, kids etc get treated. A $10.00 presciption can cure a $40,000 er visit.

Why can't the U.S. just expand MEDICAID to help those who cannot afford health care and need and want it? The company you work for or if you have a private plan, they are raising your rates 15% January 1, 2010. AARP, AMA, and the head of the largest small business organization supports the new bill. Why are you against the "opt out" provision? I think that is the best idea yet. Lets see these red states put their money where their mouth is. Opt out the day after the bill is signed. That being said, I support the Libertarian take on health care. So many doctor and E.R. visits could be eliminated if people weren't required by law to get a script for their needed treatments. Actually they have been for several months now. Rep. Ryan first proposed his at the same time as the Democrats. There are a few others out there, but they haven't acquired enough cosigners to get to the debate stage within the committee, which is where all bills must begin. Unfortunately, too much T.V. time has been spent on the Democrat's bills and not on the other bills or the other suggestions. I for one support the libertarian stance of eliminating the FDA and the AMA to improve access.

The last 350 pages of the 2000-page bill frightening illiterate Republicans discuss improving Indian health care and fixing the Indian laws. I really have no idea what to make of that other than the outrage at the bill size seem disingenuous.

No. Being libertarian means that I trust the average citizens to be able to medicate and take care of themselves without having to be forced to see government approved professionals. We are already too regulated by the government. We force asthmatics to go to an ER for simple breathing treatments, because our government has a hostile view of nebulizers. We force them to dish out $100/year to have a doctor say, "Yes, you are still asthmatic," to get their needed meds. It is all lawful waste.

The other flaw in your thinking is that I HAVE to go to a hospital for everything. Not true. Also most procedures that I would be prone to face, cost less than that. And compare the one time $30,000 bill with just 20 years of savings at $3,000/year ($60,000). So by the time I am 52, you would have spent double on your precious bureaucrats. And yes, the tax codes are a major reason for the gap between the uninsured and the insured. When an employer provides insurance, it is not considered income and therefore not subject to income taxes. This is why employers prefer in most situations to provide benefits instead of wages. They have to pay additional taxes above what you see on your pay stub. Those who purchase insurance on their own, have to do it post tax. The best they can hope for is a tax deductible.

I challenge you to look up your premiums (including what your employer pays instead of real wages) and add them up the next twenty years. To help you understand the math: My premiums are $350.00/month w/out prescription drug coverage. For a year that adds up to $4200. I spend (with several chronic diseases mind you) about $1,000/year on my health care. By paying out of pocket, I save approximately $3,000/year. If you times that by twenty years, that comes out $60,000. By the time I'm 72, that will be $120,000. It is not rocket science. Insurance is nothing more than a lottery where the bureaucrats take out their admin fee.

I do watch Fox. Mostly for laughs, but I admit I am part of the problem. But if you watch it for "news" you have problems my friend. Fox's ratings don't mean it is the truth. "Kung Fu Panda" made more money at the Box Office last year than "Iron Man." Does that make it a better movie? No. Fox has hot hosts to increase ratings and focuses on controversial wedge issues to hook viewers. Sadly for CNN, they focus on the real news in other countries. Americans are mostly dumb so they tune out.

@jensen1901 You are pathetic, for instance Fox (Glen Beck) has come out with those czars? What up with that? Hannity, has shown the realationship with the other ratical socialist, what up with that. You can't argue with he facts. This is what these people are. And you support this, these people are running to the boarder with socialism, the facts are there. Dave you really do need to stop watching so much Fox, seriously. Here are sme facts for you: the very first "czar" was installed under Roosevelt. He had 12. GW Bush had 31 Czars, including an "AIDS Czar" an "Abstinence Czar" (Randal Tobias) and a Science Czar (John Marburger). Obama has 32 czars, but of the 32 positions in Becks list, only eight are Obama-appointed, unconfirmed, brand new czars. And the term "czar" is just shorthand for policy advisor. Not quite evil as Beck thinks.

If I hear another rich person say that we need to raised taxs on the rich, I will hide my money. Because they aren't talking about the rich are they.

That is false. They already do. When was the last time you were allowed to have a prescription renewed without having to go to a doctor first? When was the last time you could see the medical professional of your choosing to have a broken bone set? When was the last an asthmatic could buy a nebulizer without a prescription? We have TOO much government. That is what has driven up costs.

You didn't lose vietnam to people like me because I wasn't born when it was going on. You lost because you stuck your nose where it didn't belong. You still havn't shown me how you protected this country during vietnam. My hats off to you for making the decision to go but there are policeman and teachers who work in the inner city who do more to protect our country then you did. Hide behind that uniform and act like a brave man.

THEY have 1990 pages of legislation produced by days, weeks, and months of bargaining and compromise with US. Now, WE counter that with a few pages of talking-points by which we propose to scrap everything and start re-bargaining re-bargaining from the end of the process.
WE'RE so clever. WE think no one will catch on that WE can keep this up until the final result will be NO CHANGE. STATUS QUO. The insurance companies make out like bandits, we get reelected - and the public suffers. Ha ha.

So Obama is ONLY president because of legislation? Without the help of a bunch of white legislators he would have been unable to become president? Please explain how the Civil Rights bill is actually what produced his success. And what about all of the other African Americans in this country? Are you saying that racism is dead? Are you saying that massive amounts of African Americans are not still living in poverty?

Without civil rights legislation, Obama would never have been able to achieve his success.
Yes there are massive numbers of African Americans living in poverty (along with white people) but without the civil rights legislation, the ones that have become successful, would have still been riding the back of the bus, both metaphorically and literally.

Wow, what kind of a racist are you to state emphatically that Obama could not become president without the legislation. Seriously. Thurgood Marshall reached the highest court without the need for legislation. Several African Americans had succeeded BEFORE the legislation. You must think very poorly of Obama. And the very fact that massive amounts of African Americans still live in poverty proves that the legislation did not fulfill its promises.

It is quite simple. It would have been far far harder for Obama to win without the legislation. Hell, in some states, without civil rights legislation, it would have been illegal for him to even exist, as interracial relationships were illegal.

That is false. The only thing those states needed as had happened by the time of the writing of the legislation was to repeal the bad legislation on the books. Writing MORE legislation does not solve anything. And yes, you are a racist for saying that Obama could not be president without legislation. It is a fact that Thurgood Marshall rose to the highest court without the Civil Rights bill. Therefore your argument holds no water.

It was much harder for him to do it.
He was barred from the University of Maryland School of Law, for example, and had to go elsewhere to get his qualification. The number of hurdles that would have had to have been jumped for Obama to ascend to the presidency would have been far greater had there not been such legislation, right down to allowing black people the vote.

You do realize that African Americans were granted the right to vote shortly after the Civil War? The Civil Rights bill did not give them that right, since they already had that right. And you have just confirmed that the legislation was not necessary for Obama to become president. And are you still ignoring the massive amounts of African Americans that still live in poverty?

They were only granted the right to vote on paper.
There were many many Jim Crow laws that discouraged them from voting, especially in certain states.

And the court was already starting to overturn those unjust laws. The legislation was unnecessary. The fact that African Americans were succeeding before the legislation, and the fact that massive amounts of African Americans still live in poverty today prove the dismal failure of the legislation.

And they are still hindered today. So yes, the legislation was a failure. And as I have already stated. The bad legislation was being removed by the courts as it should be. Adding more legislation was unnecessary. And you still have yet to address the fact that massive amounts of African Americans are still living in poverty today. That means the legislation failed.

The gov. can't even handle Medicare and Social Security. So how will they handle something like this? Some say that it was actually written by the big insurance companies. Is that true? Others say that the Insurance companies dont want it because of the competition. I wonder who is telling the truth. What about the states who opt out? Will they too have to pay taxes to support this monster?
