Not sure if it was true but ive heard that Eubank had to be physically carried and put into the shower by Trainer Ronnie Davies the morning after this fight such was its ferocity....great fight with a tragic end.
Watching this again after 20 years is very difficult indeed;Watson's fight outside the ring dwarfed all his boxing achievements and they were amazing ones. An amazing individual and a tragic end to his career but he fought himself back...amazing
I often wondered if the beating Watson took from Mccallum in his previous fight to this was in some way to blame for what happened to him here .
I remember that none of the top middleweights would go near The Bodysnatcher till he was almost 40 yrs old - but Watson gave him a helluva battle , The KO was brutal - many feel to this day that Duff should never have let im out for that last 11th round - he went down hard and was totally out of it.
@BringerOfTheTruth Watson was unwell when he entered the ring with McCallum , he had a bout of flu and a fractured nose and his corner told him to do the wrong stuff in the fight. He`d have done better doing his counter boxing rather than chasing McCallum.
@chisacat Well Watsons fight with McCallum had been delayed twice and he'd been out the ring for nearly a year because of this, also Watson had a bout of flu and a fractured nose when he fought McCallum. Watsons corner gave him the wrong instructions telling him to go after Mike, very bad plan, Watson would have done better doing his counter punching,
What happened to Watson was a damn shame, he was an excellent fighter. Just wish it wouldn't have taken something as tragic as this to get peoples heads outta their arses :(
@qdis662 It also didnt help the fact that the ambulance went to the wrong hospital, Watson was lucky to even survive, he's a born fighter and a true gent.
@WadzillaBhoy Yes I understand that bit, but at that time there were not that many hospitals that specialised in nuerological problems, also Ambulance crews always went to the nearest casualty. Which, at that time, was deemed the correct thing to do by Dr's and Ambulance trainers. Only now can Amb staff by pass one hospital to get to a specialised unit.
@AnglOsAxOn2 Dude seriously I made my initial comment two months ago, I can't be arsed to have this conversation, to be honest. I was just reiterating what I saw in the documentary. I was 4 when this fight took place so how the hell am I going to know what the NHS was like back then? Anyway I was simply saying he was lucky to survive. I wasn't having a go at the amb staff so I dont understand why you are messaging me. I was mearly stating a fact.
Its a shame. Most people dont understand Eubanks humour or just dont care to. I though, think he was a great champ and top man. I actually dislike Nigel Benn. I think hes a bit of a bully. Even as a convert.
thats top 5 super and middleweights all time..not up there with hagler but i think he might of given roy jones a good fight, thats a prime jones not the jones that overrated Joe Calzaghe beat..prime Eubank would of beaten joe
dont rant jones up to be all that good, go take a good hard look at his career it was built up from ex sparring partners and over the hill fighters.
even b-hop was no where near peak wen they fought and toney entered the ring 18lbs overweight. so really he beat no1 in his prime and got wooped from tarver an johnson. these are just facts not my opinion.
Eubank was the best middleweight, super middleweight of his era..hated by most..but he was honest and didn't diss his opponents..and beat em all in his prime..respect fella
Incredible battle , Eubank a tremendous finisher , I saw Watson in a wine bar a few years back and we exchanged hellos , shame he had to endure such injuries , If i see Gary Newbon on road i will slap him
yeah the comment was open to interpretation, but I give Eubank the benefit of the doubt, you don't accuse someone of taking steroids in the middle of a sentence in which you are praising them. Not unless you have schizophrenia!
Yeah the 1st time he said it i knew it was a joke but when he said it then 2nd time i was unsure lol but i guess he was just clarifying again and then got interupted
@lshannon41 - yeah chris was still pumping after the hardest fight of his life - he was amazed by watsons strength at 168 pounds - but during the run up to fight night - he qouted Mike Mccallums comment on watson when he was asked how the fight would progress Chris said " his bravery will be to his detriment " I dont blame Jimmy Tibbs for the 12th round - Watson was in worse shape against McCallum when Micky Duff sent him out for the last round.

Eubank was complimenting Watson???? Give over!! If he had been complimenting him, there would have been some hint of irony in his voice and there wasn't.
Eubank was taking the piss with his comments about drug use. He was actually complimenting Watson on his strength and durability. Trust the press to blow it all out of proportion.
Absolutely. The guy had just had the hardest fight of his life and made a tongue in cheek comment about how tough Watson was. Newbon isnt stupid, he knew what Eubank meant but he was trying to go for an angle to get his headline. In a way i wish it had been headline news because that means the tragedy that stuck Watson would never have happened.
Its funny they have all the cameras on it when they are fighting in the ring, but when there is a fight in crowd they wont show it? Newbon is a twat, he would ignore is dying grandma to get an interview.
Are people that thick these days that they cant work out a back handed complement. He was complementing watsons power by sugesting he was on drugs. Please tell me not everyone is as stupid as these two dim shit comentators.
No one knows Watson was'nt on drugs Im sure he wasn't but in the world of athletics today who really knows? Great fight Watson deserved the victory but hey its the hurt game.

Watson was a brilliant boxer, underated and robbed of a fantastic career.
The guy made peanuts from the game and his next fight after knocking Nigel Benn out with a jab, earned him £15,000.....while Benn got £650,000 for his.
Still cant believe some dik head said that about tumours!!!! cock
no proper medics at ringside with oxygen etc what a disgrace.the wbo belt is a shower of shite.joe calazghe 10 years a holder of it and nearly always fighting european fighters who posed no danger.joe your unbeaten record is a sham.

An honest and caring guy that he was, he cuts the interview with newbon as soon as he knows there's a problem with watson.
I remember Nigel Benn celebrating, oblivious to the fact that Gerald Mclellan had collapsed.
But Eubank always villified in the press whereas Benn a hero.
