@TheShizue777 Yes he is,and don't you think he would have made an amazing Bert in Mary Poppins?I admire Dick Van Dyke,he is another underrated/underused entertainer but really his cockney accent let him down.Tommy was born to play the role of Bert.If not him-i think he had commitments on the stage-then Tony Newley.

@TZEITEL10 You'll never find a more talented man. Teen idol, actor, musical star, writer (including his autobiography "Bermondsey Boy"), and sculptor. Just a delight to watch, too. Yes, he would have been perfect as Bert. Dick Van Dyke is one of my idols, but, I have to agree his accent was a little unusual. Funny you should mention Dick. I've always thought of Tommy Steele as a combination Bobby Rydell and Dick Van Dyke. Charming people all.

@TheShizue777 Yes i read the book,enjoyed it.I was born in 1960 so i missed out on the fifties,i listen to all kinds of music really.My partner born and bred in Bermondsey,unlike myself,saw Tommy on stage as Kipps in "Half a sixpence",anyone who doubts Tommys origins should watch the film clips on YT,his east end roots are obvious,unmistakeable.

I think the locals regard him with a great deal of pride.

@TZEITEL10 Wow, what a nice coincidence! I look at Tommy Steele and think how lucky you, your partner and I were to have known a time when entertainers knew how to entertain and when singers were expected to actually know how to sing. Tommy Steele is a real jewel in the crown!

That's the best thing about YT. People can share all these clips and there can be discussions and sharing first-hand knowledge about Tommy Steele and stars like him. His autobiography is one of the best.

@MrsPippinBaggins I don't know where you are from,surely not Ireland.I have lived in Bermondsey for some years,i can assure you that he was born in this part of south east London.I have met a number of people who remember his early days as our first,some may say our greatest, rock and roller. Some people l have met knew his family.

Southwark council placed a blue plaque near his birth place,now built over,and Tommy and his wife came to unveil it,in front of a large crowd of well wishers.

Disney has always had a magic formula for everything they do. While films and other from this era were shortly before my time, they were an essential element in my childhood upbringing available through the miracle of VHS.  As a child I had two heroes. One was Superman, and the other was Mary Poppins. On any given day, you could have seem me running around with a red towel tied to my back, or jumping off the front porch with my mothers automatic umbrella. Thanks for posting. God Bless.

"The Happiest Millionaire" seems to have been lost in the shuffle over the years. I haven't noticed it being played anywhere in recent years. This has to be partly due to the fact that it came out in the mid-late 60's during what TCM calls the "slow fade" of movie musicals. They seemed to be less believable by that point--"People don't break out in song in real life." At least here, these works get attention again.

@post42neon This is true indeed. It is unfair to compare Millionaire with HSM since they are so different and serve different purposes. They do not belong in the same ocean, if you will. My apologies. I do not think HSM sucks, but I would like it much better if it had more charm and less glamor. That's what I like about movies like this and, say, Mary Poppins. But, it's all a matter of opinion and taste when it's all said and done :)
