I am so happy I run across this video. I got up to let my dogs out and was hearing this in my woods for about 40 mins. It is a very chilling sound to say the least, but happy I know it is a fox.

Ha. My son and I just got back from a camping trip and a fox literally walked past our tent making this blood curdling noise and my son didn't even move. I looked up "sounds of a red fox" and found your video to verify.

Thank you so much for posting this! My girlfriend and I were just woken up at 2:20AM by a terrible screaming just like this... sounded like either an alien invasion or a little girl being murdered - it scared the crap out of us. I've seen a lot of foxes on my road, so it makes perfect sense. Gotta love youtube and helpful folks like you :D

haha i just heard this tonight. i live in a fairly wooded area where its quite common to see a fox and their young but never in my life i have heard their mating scream. Not only did it scare the shit out of me but it had me reaching for my gun. lol ps the call i had was much longer and really sounded like a woman screaming.

I was just sitting with my laptop about 45 min ago and i heard this. I knew it was a fox so iwent up to the window to hear it, suddenly a crow starts cawing. so every time the fox would scream the crow would caw. except it hasnt stoped so its fucking annoying.

I liked in the mountain in Cali and my dog had 10 pups and 1 fox would make those curling crys and our dog would go to where the fox crys were to only have another fox come up on the other side to snatch a pup....we could hear the pup crying as it was being taken off. As they say Sly as a Fox.

Ohhh I've heard this sound before, but under much more horrible circumstances. I was sleeping and then heard this noise in a screaming pain felt way. It turns out the fox that was screaming had watched its mate get hit by a car, and its cry was the most horrific sound I have ever heard... I heard this tonight here in Colorado. Wondered what the heck it was, went outside and there was our neighborhood fox, standing in the middle of the street. She "shrieked" once more then took off. I came in, googled it and found it to be of normal behavior, especially in Autumn when they go into heat. Good audio here, it's exactly the sound foxes make!
