haha, honestly, I do better speaking to groups than an individual! I'm totally on the reverse. Its like for me, I hone in on a person's slightest movement, I can't help that I'm just way too observational (its good for studying for acting though). So when I'm speaking for a group, I hone in on the tone of the audience as a collective whole - but when I'm speaking to an individual person, I'm much more tuned into the person specifically and I get really nervous that way.
@glocherfan an example of the one person thing - like today, when I was calling about finding an apartment, I got randomly really nervous talking to the person on the other side. : /
I once had to give a presentation for a final project and I literally did not sleep all night I was so nervous and anxious. I think I was so tired that my nerves weren't as bad and I think it was one of my best presentations lol. I think what helps me is to just have confidence about myself and what I'm talking about. Without confidence I'm a total wreck. I also tend to procrastinate, which is what sometimes makes it more difficult to talk in public. Preparation is key.
One of my high school English teachers suggested focusing on something in the back of the room (it looks as if you're looking at the audience without actually doing so). I took this advice during my next presentation, and looked at poster in the back of the room. Little did I realize, one of my peers was sitting directly under that poster! It looked as if I was creepily staring at him for ten minutes. Whoops.... Anyway, totally get where you're coming from. I get really nervous as well.

@SwimmersMusic - LOL too funny. Yes - i think that could work for me, if in all my nervousness I remember to focus on the back of the room. lol
