Excellent video -- clearly and precisely demonstrated. When setting up the tripod, I would suggest crossing the outer poles underneath the center pole; this method causes a portion of the load to be supported from the wood-to-wood contact of the outer poles. Setting up the center pole underneath the outer poles places nearly all of the load on the lashing instead of the poles.
hay paul, I know u think your way is the only way but ive ben setting tipis up for 20 years and the Indian way is bomb proof. your way is alot like the yakama Indians do there tipi tripods. I like the lakota way the best its fast and u can take it down easy and dont cut any rope it can b reused.. BC
Good ideas for the tripod however the poles were crossed wrong. They should be crossed with both side poles crossing each other in the front so the weight is bearing down ont the crossed poles instead of the weight bearing down on the cordage. other than that, great video.
Isn't it harder to make than you need? I remember seeing a video with siberians natives mounting a tepee fashion shelter based on a tripod, poles and cariboo skin. But for the tripod, they just lashed three saplin poles togethers with only one loop going over the three poles, made from leather. It worked well too!
@Rhinoch8 Yeah, that is a good point... this is more of a bomb-proof set up so to speak, but the simple method could work fine too... especially if conservation of cordage is an important factor. But, for anything that requires a strong lashing, I'd prefer this technique... thanks for your input!
Thanks Paul, I never thought about using a tripod to make a backrest, but now that you've mentioned it, it seems so obvious! I'll definitely try that next time I'm out.
@HedgehogLeatherworks Yeah, I was thinking something like that, or maybe weaving together some smaller sticks into a mat and leaning it against the side. Either way, it'd be great to have something to rest your back against!
Thanks for the upload! I love watching your videosbecause you explain things so well and clearly and your respect for nature is awesome! Keep up the good work!
@gzussturbo Thanks! Glad you are enjoying these videos and nice to hear that you are one of the folks that "get it" when it comes to the respect element! Thanks for your encouragement!
Thanks! No, not unless you put a strong pole between them and hung the hammock from the pole... but you would need some pretty large tripods for that.

@wbequet as long as they don't slide against the ground it should be more than enough.
