If you would download yourself to a computer you become a logical computer program... Which is interesting... What is consciousness? Is consciousness like a program? Because were programmed to do specific stuff (getting hit -> ouch, having sex -> enjoyment), how we react to specific stuff.
After thinkng a bit about it, if you would download yourself to a computer as a program, you would ahve something that does the same stuff you would do, but is not you..... Which would be an interesting development because then human behavior can be predicted very accurately...
I think if consciousness or our brain were downloaded onto computers, it would take away experience and the meaning of life. Without individual experiences, how would life have meaning?
Maybe after three days, and I become bored with my supreme power I think "Okay, well.. maybe I'll try compartmentalizing myself into different experiences"?
I was trying to explain how mainstream science says consciousness does not exist, that only the brain exists. There is only a code being crunched, and that computational processes of the brain can be measured objectively and represented digitally. Then the faithful futurists come along and say technology will allow us to transfer our consciousness to computers. I don't know what they are smoking (or maybe the problem is that they aren't smoking something!?).
The problem with this mainstream science is, well... WE ARE CONSCIOUS!!! The reductionists will just respond by saying it's all an illusion, but how is it that using this illusion they are able to objectively measure the brain and decipher its computational language?
I'm trying to find a way to understand consciousness as something embodied. Hopefully this will help us find our way out of this crazy schizophrenic reductionist thinking.
I dont think i understand a lot of this, but when i first heard about transferring consciousness onto some sort of electronic device, I immediately just assumed it would be like an ultimate trip.
I thought a lot of people think life is suffering its what makes us aware and the mind and the body is one-isnt that eastern philosophy or something? But still we seek to have out of body experiences, and escape the anxiety/releif thing we all thrive on as humans.
so i think the experience would be something like one step further than highly dissociative substance, but perhaps one step less than death...I guess it would be death but there would still be something left...some sort of the old energy or information working inside of a new body. More like reincarnation than virtual reality, because i also think that the things we perceive as suffering in the human form would be replaced with new forms of suffering, machines dont have it so easy either.
I have a question for you, but please don't be insulted by it. Why do you care what these people think? I mean, there are SO many different crazy ideas out in the world, with people believing in them.
When I hear talk of putting downloading our consciousness onto a computer to extend our life span, I agree with the retort of "what about suffering?"
Then, I just don't care. The same retort works against attacking Iran/aq, the Bible/etc
I care what other people think because I see thought and language as something we all share with each other. I don't know what I mean until I try to communicate it to someone else. So when I hear others seriously discussing an idea (even if I disagree with it), I pay attention, because by virtue of the fact that I can understand what they mean, their thoughts are my thoughts, too. Who are my smart people? Anyone who understands what I mean when I speak/write is smart enough for me!
Its an action movie, with a small philosophical exploration, regarding transfer of consciousness.
If you like action movies (and philosophy which you of course do), then I suggest it. (I won't say more, to not spoil the movie if you do decide to watch it)

Which would reduce consciousness to nothing special...

This is really great thinking, Matt. Important. How about organizing and elaborating this into your book? :-)

if one says we can 'move consciousness' then that is saying 'consciousness' is a thing that can be moved.
But we dont know what it IS, and cannot measure 'it'.......so? I am not quizzing you ;)
lookin foreward to part 3. Fascinating, really

so yeah once again youd have dumbfounded awareness in an energy dependent vessel, trying to figure out what the fuck is going on.
