  • the turks were not from what is today known as turkey. They came from Algeria and Morroco and at that time its was known as Tyrkjaveldið (the turkish empire). Later they took over Constantinoble and the land was called Turkey.

  • @MrA1WAR Didn't the Turks originally came from Central Asia, between the Altai mountain range and Lake Baikal? Their military successes in Anatolia made Alexios I Komnenos aks for help, which resulted in the first crusade.

  • @MrA1WAR You are wrong, turks came from Central Asia and had were nomads.

  • @wilhelmrk I'm not wrong. I wasn't talking about were they originally came from, but were the turks that invaded Iceland were from at that point in time.

  • @runedesoleil you are right. But Algeria belonged to Turkey or was a vassal at the time, thus came that they were Turks. ;)

  • What does the name mean in English?

  • @Svindsson

    The Turkish

  • @Svindsson It's more than just "Turkish". "Tyrkja" are those who come from Turkey and "ránið" means "the theft".

In the 17th centrury pirates from Turkey came to Iceland and stole many people from Iceland, shipped them to Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya to be sold.

  • @eidure1 Interesting, I never heard of that event before. I will read into it. Many thanks!
