Custer had to know he was screwed as soon as he retreated up the ravine. The closure rate of an enemy force is something someone as experienced as Custer can just feel.
Consider the speed of the Indian ponies with riders, how many there were, how many were firing at them and their rate of fire. There is no way the Indian force was not going to be among them in close combat, overwhelming and annihilating them.
All the above is something Custer realized, intuitively.
@HerrCollier No, he's being honest. But he is wrong; without heavy armor the cavaliers would in any case be at a major disadvantage. However, Custer had thrice as many men under his command than is stated.
Custer was impetuous .. at both The Washita & at The Horn, he failed utterly to recon properly & establish the strength of his foe. He failed to believe his indian scouts when they advised caution & that the seventh was greatly outnumbered. He split his force into 3 disparate elements when almost in contact with the enemy. In his own perception .. he was obsessed with preventing the indian village from running away. He was exceedingly brave .. no dispute .. but FOOLISH bravado is often fatal.

200 hundred against 2000, if the indians didnt had white made rifles they would have been smoked even with that kind that kind of odds

@HerrCollier That has been proven time and time again, its not any other type of thinking apart from the historical one.
