He can't fly because his wings aren't fully developed at this point (hence the 'Kid' in the title). He's older in the second game, which is why he can use them to slow his descent.
are you playing on the computer? cause that would explain the keyboard and the hard controls. cause i played this area before and in the super smash brothers masterpeices and i played with the calssic controller and it wasn't this hard.
to answer that question of what the grime reaper was doing there is that pit is in the underworld. medusa did somthing to goddess palutena when they invaded skyworld or somthing like that. and pit being captain of the guard had to go on a quest to safe her. and i think meduse did somthing to his wings taht made it hard for him to fly. i think... NOT A 100% SURE!!!

The key to make it easier is to go through slowly, otherwise the enemies will group up on you.
That way you can also collect more hearts to buy potions early.
Gotta love the Reaper and his little mimic troops :D
