Sadly, Obama is still to the right of conservatives in most developed countries. When was the last time I heard Dems addressing gun control or the death penalty? Obama wants only a heavily compromised healthcare reform, but refuses to discuss a single-payer system.
For anyone who has actually traveled or lived outside the US, they would know this. The insularity of Americans helps keep them woefully ignorant of just how far to the right political discourse has gone in the US.
America is one of the most conservative nations to call itself a democracy. Yes, I am including so-called democracies in that. And besides, McCain is going to win for two reasons:
1 Closet racism. The Bradley effect on a nation wide level will be even more dramatic than it was then because the rest of the US is no where near as accepting as CA.
2. Widespread fraud. Let's face it, the Republicans have a lot of practice when it comes to rigging elections.

Polls consistently show that the majority of Americans believe in creationism, oppose gay marriage, have a natural aversion to government intervention in the economy, oppose universal health care, support the death penalty and etc.

the thing with American politics is America as a whole, Congress being somewhat of a cross-section, tilts more to the truly right-wing than the truly left-wing. speaking in extremes, so nobody get pissed, right-wing nut jobs are far more represented than the truly super-liberal people. The fact that there is even debate over gay marriage etc. evidences that. The right calls on religion a lot, and it seems that a lot of issues have religion as a factor, which is not as it should be

People need to realize that "pure" capitalism and socialism are both idealistic and unrealistic. A completely unregulated economy leads to monopolistic corporations seizing power, whereas a lack of private property stifles innovation.
The U.S. is one of the most capitalistic countries in the world, and yet our healthcare and education systems are in the dumps. Even our economy is slipping behind. The only thing we're number 1 at now is military spending.

The Republicans have had the worst campaign. The candidate looked like there couldn't possibly be anyone in the country more dumb, but he scoured the continent, found someone who was and made her his deputy. Then a disastrous economic crisis began weeks before the election while they're in charge, then their own side started deserting to Obama, they've been caught spending half the economy on dresses, but they're STILL only 5% behind.
So go on, try and claim that the US is not conservative.

Cenk is wrong on this one. The US is still hardcore conservative even if the democrats are running the show. People still get 10+ years in jail for selling pot, there is still no universal healthcare, prostitution is still illegal, and evangelical christians are still a huge portion of the population. I'm not saying these are bad policies, but the US is still the polar opposite of many "left wing" European nations.

I think he's spot on most times, but here I think he over reaches. Yes, the country is not as Conservative as Newt Gingrinch thought it was, but that doesn't mean that the Democrats are picking up seats because it's now turning more liberal. It's swinging the DNC's way because the GOP leadership has been a miserable disaster with very little to offer the country this election. And it has very little to do with voters loving the Democrats message. They don't as the Congress is polled very low.

Whether or not you think the U.S. is more right wing or left wing depends upon where you are coming from...I think most people who commented are forgetting this. To an Iranian or a Saudi Arabian, the U.S. may seem liberal, whereas to a Dutch person or a French person it may seem conservative.

Sadly, Obama is still to the right of conservatives in most developed countries. When was the last time I heard Dems addressing gun control or the death penalty? Obama wants only a heavily compromised healthcare reform, but refuses to discuss a single-payer system.
For anyone who has actually traveled or lived outside the US, they would know this. The insularity of Americans helps keep them woefully ignorant of just how far to the right political discourse has gone in the US.

America is one of the most conservative nations to call itself a democracy. Yes, I am including so-called democracies in that. And besides, McCain is going to win for two reasons:
1 Closet racism. The Bradley effect on a nation wide level will be even more dramatic than it was then because the rest of the US is no where near as accepting as CA.
2. Widespread fraud. Let's face it, the Republicans have a lot of practice when it comes to rigging elections.

I am saying that Cenk has disappointingly poor judgment and I would rather choose not to waste my time watching a person speak who has such little understanding of the broader topic in which they are referring. It does not take a genius to see that Americans on average are a right-of-center people. I am not speaking of opinions, but rather judgment. In terms of opinions, I agree with Cenk over 90% of the time, but if he does not provide me with insight, then I have no reason to watch him.

I love this guy, but he's misinterpreting. The columnist is right, democrats in this country are really center on the issues and republicans are swinging far far right. It's a matter of definition. If you define center as exactly between a democrat and a republican, then cenk is right, but if you define center as the ideological center, big gov vs small gov, sep of church and state and all that, then we're still a ways to the right of center as a nation.
