I first heard this on a recording by Susan Reed in 1959 -- an album tragically no longer available. For reasons too complex to explain here, it truly changed my life. Yours is the first performance I have heard of this exquisite song that equals -- and sometimes exceeds -- the poignant enchantment of the original. Thank you; blessed be.
What a beautiful song and how beautifully sung. Your voice is sincere as well as accomplished. It's especially powerful if the song depicts love of homeland. I might cover it myself. I can imagine it with violin and acoustic guitar. Thanks for sharing!
I first heard the Eileen Donaghy version of this song in the 1960s and this is best I have heard since then. This song needs to be performed at a slow tempo to bring out all the emotion it contains. Maureen's version is hauntingly beautiful and captures the emotion perfectly. It is a privilege to listen to her sing the song.
My Lagan Love" is a traditional Irish song from the 15th to 16th century found in Donegal.t was written during a time in Irish history when it was forbidden to write openly about Ireland, or express love, devotion, or nationalism towards the country.[The Irish had decided to write songs that indirectly would reference their love for their mother country; they would refer to Ireland as a beautiful woman. Its not a love song about a woman but about Ireland the country.
Is not Kate Bushes version so much more heart crushingly beautiful. So stark and simple. But I guess we all grow different ears. And what we hear is for us alone.
I wish you sang it slower. Not because there is anything wrong with your tempo, but just so it would last longer. I'll be content with listening, a few hundred more times.
I wish you sang it slower. Not because there is anything wrong with your tempo, but just so it would last longer. I'll be content with listening, a few more times.
Maureen, I just listened to this after several months' absence, and it's as beautiful as ever - the greatest version, IMHO. Thank you again for sharing your gift.
Lovely song and the complete poem has some lovely verses such as "her welcome like her love for me is from her heart within, her warm kiss felicity that knows no taint of sin"
Thank you very much, Maureen for introducing me to this song. It is the first time I have heard it, and I love it. Your music is so soothing and peaceful. Thanks D
I love this song; my grandfather had recordings of this song by John McCormack and Father Sidney MacEwan. Later I heard Kenneth McKellar sing this in concert ; McKellar made an acapella recording . This is a lovely rendering her. Anthony Kearns has recently recorded it as well. I have always thought it has a magical quality that expresses exactly what Gaelic cianalas (longing ) is.

@simonwright44 You can find it on Sheet Music Plus. It's by Harty, and you should be able to find it by typing in "Lagan Love C." At least, There is also a higher version in the key of E.
As has been said, this is the definitive version, but if you like a man singing this, Finbar Wright does a marvelous version also with excellent piano accompaniment
Funny , my Father was from Belleek and married a first generation Irish girl when he came to America , my Mom , Parents from Garrison , still here always told me My Lagan Love is her favorite song and always said Irish music can be so sad and wonderful , this song which you do beautifully . I will let her hear your way which is foremost the best I've heard and makes one feel .
@maureenderry Hello Maureen , I did not explain what I meant about "Funny " , as I read the comment before of the author Joseph Campbell , my Grandfather was a Joseph Campbell (Belleek ) , I know he's not the author but still interesting , I will be searching on this .
What a wonderful voice you have. Full, rich, with a beautiful and slow vibrato. And a very beautiful piano accompaniment. Really, the best version I ever heard of this song. It touches me profoundly.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. It gives me much pleasure to sing this song...In my opinion one of the most beautiful love songs ever written.
It is just a beautiful song to sing. I love the melody and the words. I have heard many men sing this song but a beautiful song is a beautiful song so matter who sings it.
I'm off to bed and I can´t think of a better song as the last thing to hear. May your version, Maureen, be the last thing I hear on this earth... it's beautiful, beautiful beautiful
I was born and raised in Belfast and all I ever listened to was salsa, cumbia, vallenato. Now I live in colombia and I´ve started to listen to a lot of irish music for the first time really.
The last reply was me but I was on the internet in the library and the person 'Davelister' who had used the computer before me had not signed out so his name came up in my reply......so this is me saying thank you for your lovely comment. I love this song and love the chance to sing it.
This song was written by Seosamh MacCathmhaoil about the Lagan in Belfast hence the reference to Lambeg which is a village between Lisburn and Belfast and the further reference to Drum which is the site of a
bridge across the river and the canal that was made beside it. Yes Donegal is beautiful but it's about Belfast's river Lagan.
You will see some more songs of this type if you look through my channel....She Moved Thro' the Fair is one of those I can think of immediately and a few lullabies.
