  • What laws were broken? I thank that the kid in question belongs in special education, not in a classroom with "normal" kids. Perhaps eugenics is the best answer. We can nip this whole asspie thing in the bud now.

  • @hrg22 The teacher broke the law (Americans With Disabilities Act, Title II) when she failed to accommodate the child in her classroom. She is required by law to give reasonable accommodation to the child. The child, I'm sure, had been assessed, placed at his level, and probably spent time with a special education teacher every day. The school should have provided an aide for the child. Thank you for taking an interest in this subject. Do you have kids? Just asking.

  • @genmama1955 I do not believe that there was an ADA violation on the teachers part. The school is required to provide reasonable accommodations for disabled students. The teachers job is to develop a education plan prior to the beginning of the school year or track. That plan is approved by the school who is responsible to prohibitively assure that all federal, state and local laws are abide by. The teacher was wrong and action must be taken but there were no ADA violations. I have 4 kids.

  • @hrg22 This was a public school, therefore they received federal funding. There were more than 30 employees in the school district. Therefore, there was a violation. By the way, the school district fired all the teachers and principal and assistant principal the summer after that year, so the whole school was full of inadequate teachers.

  • she's absoloutely right!!

  • Insightful & wise. Where I teach, an aide will accompany a special needs child into the regular education class & be there to help him or her, as well as help other children. It's a win-win situation. Also, If a regular education child has a meltdown, hitting, defiance, screaming, biting, whatever, the principal is there in an instant, to support the teacher AND the student. Teaching is a tough job, but I feel lucky every day to have support like that as I teach kindergarten.

  • I agree in unity. Segregation is not the answer. Teachers aid is a better model. Information and education is key. Bullying is a big enough problem for "normal" kids and even more damaging for a child with disabilities. Great video.

  • Exactly. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment!

  • The teacher in this case is black and the boy is white and nobody is crying racism. If the boy was black and the teacher was white people like Al Sharpton would be on tv crying racism.

  • Race should have nothing to do with it. Discrimination against disabled people is the key issue in this case. Period.

  • You're right genmama race should have nothing to do with it and discrimination against disabled people is the issue. I was just saying I find it strange that nobody said Alex is white and his teacher is black. If this story involved a black student and white teacher you have to admit it'd be all over the news. Once again I agree with what you said.

  • cne08, I think that race would be more important than discrimination against the disabled in SOME areas of the US, but not in other parts. I don't know if I'm right, but it seems that more Americans focus on race than they do on disabilities. It's the other way around where I live. We do have racism, but disable people are highly visible and have services like advocacy, accommodation issues, etc. Our news didn't mention race at all.

  • @cne08

    I know, it's not fair.

  • Let's let five year olds vote on everything!

That would make about as much sense as what this teacher did. Right? Great video.

  • Sure, let's teach our babies how to run the world. Talk about the tail wagging the dog!!! Good comment.

  • PERFECT RESPONSE! I have Spina Bifida & I think it is of the utmost impotance to educate, educate, EDUCATE! That does not mean yo uget intto all the gory details, but it is my belief that the child understands about a physical or mental disability, the better prepared he/she will be to deal with it if they were to encounter a person with one.

  • @landyachtfan79 Exactly!

  • very sad situation. People don't like to talk about these things..and THAT is what's wrong. I agree.. EDUCATION is the key

  • Another thing the teacher should have done is, on her own time, educate herself on this disability. My son had a teacher who did not bother to do this, and he suffered throughout the entire year. I had meeting after meeting with his teacher, the special ed teacher, the principal, all to no avail. I had to quit school and have therapy as well as having my son in therapy during this year. There was no other jr hi to put him in. He learned a lot that year about how people treat the disabled.

  • teachers can make or break a child ... its wrong how people are so judgmental ((((HUG)))) ..

  • That is so true! After that horrible year with an ignorant teacher, things returned to normal, he did very well in 8th grade AND high school, now he is in college and is making top grades. AND he can advocate for his disabled friends. He will speak up when people start up their shit to a disabled person.

  • You made good points. It is a shame that a child with a disability to be treated that way but the worst thing was that the other children were taught at age 5 to treat those with disabilites as odd and different instead of learning to accept them.

  • That is one thing I forgot to put in my video and it is a VERY good point that should have been brought up. I need to make a video response to my own video! Thank you so much for pointing that out.

  • Wow, very well said, and you're so right. It's a travesty how the situation was handled, and I feel so sorry for the child who had to go through this. Thanks for having the courage to speak up.

  • I am a very opinionated person! I was taught critical thinking in College, even in gym class. It was part of the curriculum! I do a lot of research about things happening in the world today or about things I'm interested in or things I think I ought to know about.

  • Yes that was wrong!Adults are supposed to be the ones to set limits for children and teach them to accept one another.

  • I've never taken the education classes, but I should think that dealing with disabled children should be a required class. (I need to look that up). I understand that the teacher took this situation and handled it on the fly, but if that is so, she could have at least told the kids that she would have to let her explain to them at a later time. Then she could handled the situation in an adult manner.

  • I agree with everything you said Lee Ann, how sad and wrong!

  • That's right! It's VERY wrong. As I said earlier, I've never taken education classes after I got my BA, but if I ever do, I would be raising my hand a lot if this subject were never brought up.

  • wow, this is one of the craziest thing i have ever heard of!!! where is the compassion!!!!

  • One thing people don't understand about autism is that non-verbal CAN think just as well as the next person, if not better. They don't have the means to verbally express themselves. Silentmiaow (here on YT) has the equipment to explain all this, and she writes and films her own videos. English is her second language. She learned it, is fluent in it and she makes very educational videos. Everyone please go check her out if you want more education about autism.

  • @genmama1955 BTW, I found out that Amanda Baggs was totally mis-representing autism. Google Amanda Baggs controversy. Doing something like what she did is what gives people false interpretation of autism. It un-educates people.

  • Yeah it's a crazy situation. Can't fathom how it happened or wasn't immediately corrected. Check out aspiegirl, another person with asbergers here on youtube.

  • here in the UK we have an 'equal opportunity' policy in schools and work places where we must not discriminate against people who are 'different'

You are quite right in what you say

    x hugs x

  • They should have that everywhere. Here in the USA it's a national law.

  • i agree with you . i didn't know you had kids.

  • I have one who is 20 now!

  • awesome , if i knew this i would have wished you happy mothers day, so happy late mothers day.
