So now the punchline... The true trick is on the TV audience who generally don't question their belief that "he collected all the cash because of the techniques in place", and thus Derren seems like he's doing some sort of psychological magic. But perhaps he's not. There was no control trial. There are other possible explanations for why people gave that money, but they weren't tested either. But when the result is chalked up to a different explanation, then it's not really impressive.

Would Derren have received just as much money and a pair of shoes without the suggestions in place? Yes it is very possible.

Would he have earned more without the suggestions? No, that wouldn't be likely.

Would he have earned less without the suggestions? This is also quite possible.

Personally I think they had some effect on the results, but the impact wasn't too big.
