when it comes to Ian, let us specify, (us being me) what we need is a new album, yes, and for you , Ian, to come out to us once again. Not just Alberta, but the rest of us want to see you, you are a true Canadian Ideal
great about the boots, actually it makes sense, what mrAzrancher is saying, but i am so happy people like Ian, the kind of last singing cowboy,. He really is more of an Alberta rancher, though, just sings sometimes these days.We love him, though.
The original "american" boots where square toed and low heeled and had no left or right, either boot worked on either foot. Only wealthy men could aford custom hand made boots with good leather and left/right designations. The mexican vaquero's used the pointed to high heeled boots which the texans later adopted which became the traditional "cowboy" boot. Now we have moved away from the high underslung heels and high tops and pointed toes.
As I have read; cowboys boots started out being one offs from old army boots. Cowboys needed tougher and more suitable equipment than before. As I hear it may have started in Kansas or Texas in the day of the big drives. Glad we still got some ol good cowboy singers that are good lyricists. That new stuff, I just don't know what to make of it. :)
I LOVE this video! What a great performer, and this shows his sense of humor, as well.
As for those boots, well, I break horses and still wear lace-up packers. They walk alot better in the mountains than slip-ons. I live in northern Colorado. But I could've stayed on that horse, and Ol' Ian would've too...that's what makes this video so much fun! I wonder how many times the camera man made that 60-some (at the time) cowboy take that dive before they called it good?!!!!?
Folks that don't know make fun of cowboy boots, some say they come from Spanish dancers ... them folks that know are grin'n ear to ear to see Ol' Ian get his boot outa that stirrup, cause he could still have his foot in a lace boot and be on a hell of a ride. ( Would make a good song tho) I really enjoyed your presentation and even tho i hail from Arizona i sure like Ian Tyson's singin'. I would sure like to see someone stick MC Horses on You Tube showin' that fine old outfit. PURTY WORK!
Hey CopenhagenSnuff15g - I love the part at 1.49 as I see visual proof he is my relative. See, I promised my old dead dad, George Tyson, that I would find all his relatives in Canada. We lived in England at the time. Dads family were split between 2 countries many years before I was born. I've been in Canada searching off and on for 9 yrs. I've found 2cousins and an uncle plus their kids over here. At 1.49 Ian is the spitten image of my dad. Aww. Thanks for posting this Lippman.
Jessie, have you tried contacting Ian? You may be onto something, I'm pretty sure his family was from England--part of the lively subculture of expatriate English gentleman ranchers in Alberta about a hundred years back. Good luck.
Ian and Sylvia were hugely popular folk singers in the early 1960s. They were pioneers in the country rock movement and Ian Tyson has been focusing on cowboy songs recently. They are also fantastic song writers. They wrote Someday Soon, You Were On My Mind, Summer wages and 4 Strong Winds among many others.
That is an excellant comparison of quality but Dances was about being big enough to reach out and reach down and be an Indian word , Human. You dont have to have cows to be a man, but you have to be a man to raise cattle. Tyson is a good hand and he plays down the part in a very humble fashion. In other words he wished he had stayed in bed but he knew better than .Its about trying your best even if its not good enough sometimes. Never a horse and never a cowboy as they say. You have a good one.
@wmstrop ummm...Dances with Wolves is crap if you're lookin for a cowboy movie. John Wayne made about 100 western and each one is heads above that Costner flick. But if you want true cowboy life, watch Lonesome Dove.
@wmstrop This video will get to real cowboying quicker than Dances with Wolves, Bill. Can't remember seeing a single cow in that movie, let alone a cowboy. Pretty good Western, but not a cowboy movie.
I'm surprised I haven't thanked you for this before, I've watched it a number of times. Title song from my favorite solo Ian album, though far from my favorite song. replying to other comments: I'm sorry that Ian has disowned songs like "Barney," which is one of his very best. Maybe even now it's hard to sing that one. It does seem like it could fit into his current "sound," unlike some of the others. People can still get the album, in a reissue on Bear Family as The Beginning of the End.
"...has disowned songs like "Barney," which is one of his very best. Maybe even now it's hard to sing that one"
I saw every performance Ian & Sylvia ever did at The Cellar Door in Washington DC in the early 70s ... probably 30+ shows? I don't recall that song, and I'd sure have remembered it.
I think you may be right. We do horse & dog rescue, mostly the old ones no one wants, and I don't think I could sing a song like that for long. No matter how many times you do it, it just gets harder.
Would somebody please put on the song's spring time and the coyote and the cowboy by Ian tyson. I have been looking for those two songs for years!!!!!!!Video or not just the songs I dont care please?
One of Ian's most starkly beautiful songs is "Barney". It's about a cowboy who has to put down his faithful old horse. This song never fails to move me to tears. Unfortunately, it's part of that huge body of old songs that he has disowned. I met and spoke with Ian once. I urged him to consider reviving this poetic beauty. I wish that everyone who gets the chance would make the same request.
Thanks so much for posting this. Ian Tyson is a Canadian legend, and it's a shame there isn't more foorage of him that's readily acessible. He wrote this song with Pat Alger, who used to write a lot of songs with a country singer named Garth...something lol
I used to live in Cochrane. I grew up on Ian Tyson's stuff. If you can find it, look for Navajo Rug. That's probably my favorite song from my childhood :)
Ian sings from his heart, he's a real cowboy and rancher, and still singing, we are blessed to have him.
