Even bad attention, punishment, spanking, yelling is perceived as a "win" and teaches them that this sort of behavior puts them in control.

As long as there's no physical danger it's best to tell the child, once and only once, that you love them and will listen to them only when they calm down, turn your back & stick to your word.

i agree, i use to have to cut my own switch from the backyard tree. the worst part was thinking about what was going to happen when i got back in the house. the actual switching was less of a punishment than that. the only thing worse than either was when my mom told me that "she was disappointed in me".
