The Minimax line of aircraft are the best ultra light every designed.Waye Ison spent 10 years developing this line of aircraft. The big plus is its the only ultra light kit design with an FAA approved stress analysis that I can find. That to me means millions. The dream magazines and the wally woofers who write about such aircraft never quote this information. Ison I believe sold 4000 kits and 100,s are flying. The Minimax is a very nice aircraft to fly for such a light weight.
WOW- Fantastic!! Beautiful plane, nice, quick takeoff, and a VERY smooth landing!! Would LOVE to own \ fly one of those!! Now, if we just swept the wings back a bit...
Not that I'm an aircraft pro, but when I saw the wing supports, and saw how they form a triangular truss system (probably the wrong phrase for it) along with the landing gear supports, I'm thinking "that looks very sturdy, for the wings and the gear. I like that." Probably saves on overall weight, too.
You have two very nice MiniMax half VW aircraft, could you tell me what model this MiniMax is, and how the 1/2 VW engine is mounted? Also what do you think is a better aircraft the MiniMax or Fisher 303, for building time, 4 stroke engine options, strength, and wind capability? Also do you know of any MiniMax kits for sale or complete aircraft, I would prefer in Canada unless the owner would bring it up to Canada if I payed the fuel?
@Sterlingengines the model with the canopy is the 1600. I do believe the minmax would be easier to build since the fischer has more parts in the wings. I have a friend that flies one with a stroke but would work fine with a 4 stroke. I believe both of my old minmax's are for sale , I am going to forward your message to the parties that own them now.
they are nice, but it's really only pleasant to fly those in GREAT atm. conditions... the slightest instability in the atm. throws those things around madly
In the UK you need a pilots license. In the US, you may need a sport pilot qualification (not sure on the details) unless it fits within the FAR pt.103 category (can't say without looking at the technical details but I think it may be too heavy). Either way it would be silly to attempt to fly any aircraft without the proper training, especially when said aircraft is a taildragger.
Yeh you definately can with fly it with an NPPL in the UK. When I said I thought it might be to heavy, I meant to heavy to fit into the FAR pt. 103 category in the states. Sorry, should have made that clearer
I think about 75mph , not exactly sure but around that. It does look like a greeat little aircraft, one of our club members had one for a while, always fancied a go.
para volar hay muchas alternativas...no solo una cessna...date una vuelta por un campo en donde se vuelen aviones ultraligeros y seguro cambiarás de opinion...sino un piloto de 747 o airbus 319 opinaría lo mismo de tu cessna...
On the website it says most of the planes are not much over 20thousand, but if you get an ultralight microlight airplane(not this, open cockpit), it costs like 12 thousand, so you could get 2 microlights almost xD.
Oh, my goodness!!! That fucking engine sounds like a Vedeneyev MP-14!!! How can that be? Regardless of all the rest, the sound makes this engine worthwhile!!!
If it was actually a 103 complient ultralight you don't even need a driver's license.... but I think this plane is well over the 254lb limit...which will make it at least a light-sport aircraft.
@Bassplayingboy ther are a lot of two seaters in those you will learn to fly them and when you have your pilot licence than you will be able to fly a one seater.
(because your comment is two jears old I think you know this by now, but I thought lets just answer it.
The whole point here is to have 4-stroke economy and reliablility and be legal. I sure don't know if this plane meets the 254 lb limit.. many don't.. but they use 1/2 VWs because they are limited to 62 mph also. Can't have a big engine cuz of weight and speed. The 1/2 VW engine generally consumes around 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 gal/hour. The 2-stroke alternatives consume about 3-5 gal/hour. This limits range and time in the air. Overhauls come up 4-5 times as fast on the 2-strokes.
I don't think its ugly. Come on over and fly it at the Dry lake near Las Vegas NV with us RC flyers. Think you can keep up with my spitfire gas RC plane lol. Nice video!
Very nice landing and good control with that tail up. I would be going of runway in mine..I guess beauty is in eye of the beholder, I think they look good for a wood structure airplane.
Is this a one of a kind, or are there plans avaliable? I really like the design. This surely doesnt weigh under 254lbs does it (to be a legal ultralight). I'm also confused as to the advantages of a half vw engine, surely the minor weight savings of knocking off 2 jugs doesnt make for anything after loseing half your power.
Minimax has been around for ages, and is part 103 legal. There are many adaptations on the design. Half VW = 30+ hp, and is a 4 stroke with cheap over the counter parts.
