  • does anyone know if Tezuka was a buddhist? Because he created the Buddha series, but at the same time, he kinda "bashes" it in Pheonix's Sun story, saying that man kind has always created religion, and how buddhism was used mainly for political purposes.

  • I'm gonna weigh in on the newer manga and anime vs. Tezuka and the like debate. I love Tezuka's work and I also love Shaman King (best of the Shonen Jump manga imho). The way that the new manga is with its action and fast pace is a reflection of the times just like movies are more commonly action-driven and less story driven now in black and white pictures of the 30's-60's. The student doesn't have to be the master but the student must respect the master and learn from the master.

  • @djpraiseadelik Shaman King got fucking terrible. Like all modern shonen comics, started interesting, then just devolved into shallow, mindless fights, more reminiscent of pro wrestling than anything good.

  • the quote from aint it cool news kinda sucks compared to the rest...

  • People who dislike this video, they will never get ever lasting life.

  • who the HELL would dislike this?!?!?!?!?

  • What a magnificent masterpiece... Osamu, your work has become a true legacy...

  • I am NOT saying a WORD about the man. Just a must buy.

  • Phoenix looks so awesome! :)

  • Nice, I'd be more than delighted to check this one out considering that the characters look more "realistic" unlike the occasional infamous swordsman standing in the background looking all mysterious or that mindless cute schoolgirl accidently given magical powers which can most likely lead others to ruin should she sneeze or trip over. (no offense to all fans into newer anime out there).

  • @DJVirgoNeun Rose-coloured glasses, much? As if there was not anime released for the masses back then too. Open your eyes. There is just as much quality in the industry now as there was then. I pity you, all the great movies and shows you are missing out on. Living in the past is a sad thing.

  • @QwoPhasaArius Why would you pity me? I am merely going back to my oldschool anime roots. Back when anime was underground and cutting edge in the US and elsewhere outside of Japan. I'm well-aware of there being anime going mainstream back in the day, but here in the US, it's a rarity since the 90's as I can remember. It we didn't call it anime back then, just simply Japanese animation. I am looking more into what I've missed out in the past BEFORE I can get into anything else.

  • @DJVirgoNeun That's fair enough. I'm just sick and tired of those who dis recent anime and turn a blind eye to anything made after the 90's. They compare the old classics to the likes of Naruto, and they wonder why ''everything'' is so shit? Throw a few quality titles at them and they wouldn't have a clue what you were talking about.

  • @DJVirgoNeun Truth is, back in the 90's and earlier the trend in western marketing was far from what it is now. You were simply exposed to a different side of anime, and that's all that you knew, now that it's shifted, there's been a huge shitfest on the downturn in ''quality'' when really all the licensers are skipping over the shows that would of previously appealed to them in favour of more mainstream crap that was ALWAYS being produced.

  • @DJVirgoNeun See what I'm getting at? Of course everyone will always have their preferences, and their is no denying anime has changed since, but in the end I believe it's largely down to the ignorance of the western fanbase. Once you get through that truck load of oldies, hit me up a PM and I'll be more than happy to introduce you to the new stuff.

  • reminds me of cyborg 009 style. im just learning about this"God of anime" ima huge anime fan

  • Everything about Osamu Tezuka's works are great

  • Considering how too many of them are pedophiles, I wholeheartedly agree

  • how do you feel about Tezuka's work.

  • i loved that film. I even rent a DVD every two weeks

  • Comment removed

  • whoa, dont get me started on that title its has things i would rather not talk about to feminists

. anyway ,so what kind of anime do you like

  • most anime fans are dumb, yup i see your point in that .

  • you know to give me a better idea

  • please give just one example.

  • same here..i havent read it for five months and still gives me chills.

  • by the way have you heard of the manga Alabaster

  • a while ago i saw each chapter on youtube now i can't find any but one.. and that's the first chaoter of dawn .. T_T..! would love to see the last chapter again.. that one really got to me i must say .. magical

  • Buy the DVD!

    Is super cheap!

  • I grew up with mickey mouse, and I can say that the black and white shorts were art, looking at astro boy, I can say that the vintage mickey shorts were similar. but when kimba came out, that really gave mickey a run for his money. The art in kimba exceeded mickey in every way. As mickey cartoons got more cartoon-ish Tezuka continued to out match disney artwise. Heck, in the 80's way after disney died, Tezuka made Bagi, and that film exceeded anything that disney was making at the time.

  • now should expect somebody (Areicans?) make a version of this movie ... as they did with astroboy...

  • Can someone tell me what's the name of the song and who plays it, please???

  • Osamu Tezuka forever!

  • Must..... purcahse!!!!

  • how can I find the OST of this film?

  • looks beautiful :o

  • thats what I was going to say lol

  • It is indeed, but if you want to get the full experience, read the comics first as they are beyond epic and truly something to behold. Osamu Tezuka was, and shall always be, the Father and master of manga.

  • Just finished volume 4 of the manga and I'm in love. Tezuka wasn't just a manga artist... he was a philosopher. He combined elements of absurdism & buddhism into a coherent, awesome philosophy. I can scan images and explain if you'd like. Anyways, Tezuka is definitely "The Godfather of Manga".

  • iTunes won't sell this in Canada! whyyyyyy!!!! I have to see it.

  • you can buy the dvd boxset in canada

  • Tezuka-dono is not awesome but divinely awesome. As many anime fans are aware and other not aware, modern anime as we know would be not the way it is without this man. He's the Manga God.

  • not only did he create the genre.. but I've yet to have seen anybody that comes close to telling stories and connectiong to people through visuals as well as he has.

  • Try many not-aware, I've gone through anime conventions in 4 states and through about 7 anime fan forums and probably about 1/4 of the people who responded to my survey have heard of Tezuka.

    It was kinda saddening.

  • i agree

  • I would say these kindsa folks need to learn the roots of where their favorite form of animation come from. But then again; if those types can bad mouth characters like Popeye, Tom & Jerry, and Felix the Cat (and they have) then they can go without Tezuka's genius.

  • Yeah, I agree It's saddening because to the modern anime fan many of tezuka's manga works at first sight, are dismissed as cartoony and childish, yet the fail to see the epic storytelling in each of them.

  • that makes it even worse? I often ask a lot of fans who say they don't like the cartoony style; what's wrong with things that are childish and goofy? Dr. Slump is childish but it's also hilarious. Zatch Bell is cartoony and weird but that ain't half bad. Mario is a childish and cartoony gaming franchise... and I defy anyone to say anything bad about him.

  • hey, hey, don't get me wrong or anything , Its just that with the overwhelming polularity of the serious "realistic style" anime titles (Death Note,Trigun , Full Metal Alchemist and etc..) that when they see any anime that has a cartoony appearance the immediately treat it as garbage. While I generally enjoy modern anime,I for one actually admire the old style.

  • I wasn't assuming that.

And I don't think "realistic" is the right word to use here, well sorta/ I think the word is contemporary; characterized by characters usually having correct anatomical proportions, being terribly androgynous despite age, or stature and looking as close to the "master race" as possible. Lol, I kid.

Hmm, well, the cartoony style hasn't exactly had many recent endearing figures. Can anyone say Lucky Star?

  • Ok I get your point, anyway regarding on your previous comment,

    about tezuka being underrated ?

    what's your opinion on that?

  • Underrated? Well here in America, yes. In Japan, the man is considered a God of animation.

To not know him over there is like not knowing Walt Disney over here in America. But I guess it might be a little too late to really introduce his work to the Western world since his ground breaking animation techniques are now basically considered extracurricular activities in art school.

And all of his cartoons have been copied and diluted by many other manga-ka, not many will rightly appreciate them.

  • and that summarized everything,

    Thank you.

  • Anime fans have become narrowed minded. Looking at Anime as "cool and action packed" instead of an art form. They shun Astro Boy and the likes because it does not keep up with their modern mindset. People should look at the past, you wouldn't have Todays Anime without Astro Boy. As You would not have Pixar and the like, without Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny.

  • i agree with you 200%

    Modern Anime has become amoral

modern anime fans think lessons in tezuka's anime are mundame and corny.

they would rather be enamored with dark bishonen like "Light Yagami" whatever the heck people are coming up with nowadays.

  • Light Yamagi... how can anyone possibly gleam moral guidance from a psycho, rich-republican douchebag with a god complex and a flawed idea of a "perfect world."

If you ask me he could run for president, or possibly enact the fourth reich.

But yeah, what an idea to gleam, especially compared to the "mundane" ideas presented in Astro Boy like acceptance, trusting others, and being a true hero.

  • When the entire world goes Kira(Light)

    Im turning to Gao-(Saruta).

  • @da43ed

(apologize for replying to a 10 month old comment)

First of all, it's called Death Note. Light is the main character's name. And just because it focuses on a antihero who does questionable things does not automatically make it amoral. It does not try to sugar-coat Light's actions as good or cool.

You could say, in some way, that Light is a modern (bishonen) version of Captain Nemo.

All I'm saying is that a manga/anime from modern times has as much meaning as 50s-80s manga/anime.

  • @germanchap

I agree with what you say at some level, but I also have to disagree.

A lot of the action packeness of today's anime and film comes from the new technology and new techniques in animation. So, you could also say that all of the new action you see is due to a change in the art form itself, which I think everyone has a right to appreciate as well. But, I do agree when I look at even some anime that lacks story for the sake of action...that's when it's a bad thing.

  • @germanchap You're just as bad for the huge generalization. You can't group an entire media's watchers under one 'fan-base'.

  • @germanchap I quite agree with you!

  • @germanchap all true, but its doing a disservice to only watch Tezuka stuff because its 'important' his work also still lives up strong and is just as entertaining as anything out today.

  • I have a question to ask. Is there a total of 13 episodes of this? It looks very interesting. Please reply asap.

  • Also, is it in English dub?

  • Yes, there's an English dub in this collection

  • Thank you so much for replying.^^ I really appreciate it.

  • My lord, that is so amazing...

And they adapted Sun? Harima! The Wolf Clan! I HAVE TO SEE THIS!

  • this song is very touching...the flow of time and humanity is pictured in front of my eyes as the phoenix flies through the universe

  • I always get a little teary-eyed after watching an installment off Phoenix: it's so eloquently written and each episode really knocks you with yet another glimpse into the human spectrum. Episodes like "The Dawn" and especially "The Future" always leave me a little choked up. Oh...

  • I really love this anime! The ending made me cry its so beautiful! Tezuka is like the best!

  • I know right? If I ever hear a Narutard see a screening of this at a con and he says that this is garbage compared to Naruto, I'll probably punch him in the face.

  • I'll hold him for you.

  • I got to agree with you. That guy should've at least get himself a chance to either see the anime for himself or read the original manga wether he'll like it or not. I love the Phoenix too. It's one of the most beautiful anime I've ever seen.

  • I have the entire series, it IS a must see!

  • wow, I've always been interested in one day reading the manga, but never got the opportunity to read it. Until today when I actually stepped into a library I saw the book right there, I checked it out and I can't wait to get started!

  • The dub tends to have a teenager's notion of drama. Aside from that gripe, The Phoenix is among the most moving and emotionally mature animes I've had the joy of watching. "Resurrection" & "The Future" are favorites, but "The Sun" is by far the most emotionally provoking and endearing. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't shed a tear here and there while watching it. Amen to "Rambo1970..." Tezuka did not make 'comics'... He made kinetic literature.

  • W00T that gave me chills! *must see*

  • My favorite story of the Phoenix was the Chapter of the Future

  • Does anyone know who was the voice actor for Phoenix herself? Somehow, it just seems like it would be a really difficult role to play...

  • It's impossible to find the subbed version of Phoenix/Hi no Tori :<

    Help... anyone?

  • Actually the new serie (this one) was done in 1080p (1920x1080), and the good old serie was released on LDs (laserdisc). For 1080p, the effects are a lot better (of course), but it lacks something from old, probably charism.

  • I saw the first episode, they did a great job. I love the rainbow effect they used on the phoenix.

  • Osamu Tezuka is truly one of the greatest story teller as his story is the most thoughtful and creative and even truthful, he is one a kind. Too bad that most people will see him as a great "comic" writer instead of someone who uses comic as a medium to deliver us messages about our humanity. I see him and his story more than just "comics"

  • @rambo19702001 you are totally right about Osamu Tezuka is a genius, and that his work is truely amazing, Phoenix is one of my fav. comic --- but when you say 'too bad people only see him as a great "comic" writer" is not the case, this is because "comic" itself shouldn't be as childish as people think, this IS a medium to deliver us message from the writer, so he is the father and god of the Japanese comic and this is not a bad thing :-))

  • 40 years??????

    wow!

  • Is this series based on O. Tezuka's Space Firebird movie?

  • phoenix was tezuka's lifes work. space firebird was based off of this.

  • It's based on Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix series that according to Wikipedia, ran from 1956 to 1989. It remained unfinished after he passed away.

  • I got that in DVD volume 1 and I love it.

  • So when exactly will ALL the DVDs be released for region 1. I know volume 1 and 2 are already available.

  • GOT TO SEE IT @___@!!!!....

  • Its actually available now on iTunes

  • yay@ I've been waiting!

  • Awesome, and it was about time Media Blaster
