an instrument is only as complicated as the player makes it. There are plenty of vastly talented bassists who put most guitarists to shame. Vai's bass player (not here) Billy Sheehan being a prime example.

Mark Wood violins. Look 'em up on the web. They sound great, although they actually strap on. The seven-strings are hard for a standard 4-string player like me to get used to. The fretted ones are a pain to get used to as well.
