  • yes army and air force personell do go through the ceremony at their choice. when I crossed in the 1979 wh had 2 air force offficer assigned the fighter squadrons go through the ceremony.

  • @CPO3Solovi "Anchors Aweigh" played by the famous "Firehouse Five Plus Two", led by Ward Kimball. He put together several fellow cartoonists at Walt Disney studios in the 1950's, originally to entertain each other on the set.and were so good that several albums were put out and were featured on the Walt Disney Show from Anaheim in the 1950's &1960's. Listen for the characteristic siren on the last chorus. One of the great Dixieland bands

  • Golden Shellback here

  • Im a shellback !

  • If some of you are wondering about some of the content, that was a special ceremony that was done away with for those who crossed the Equator for the first time.

Even the famous R. Lee Ermy had gone through that just before it was done away with.

A tradition of hundreds of years, gone like that just because somebody didn't like it.

  • @RoadCaptainEntertain And, thank you for this video! No pollywog am I! And, yes, I remember the Firehouse five, from the Mickey Mouse Club..! Boy, they were fun..!!

  • Good song ! US Navy !!!!

  • thanks, I wasnt sure, im planning on goin to a unit that carries out sea trials

  • FUN SONG!!

  • does anyone know if air force orarmy personel are assigned to a naval vessal at the time, do they participate in the crossing the line ceremony?

  • I think the only people aboard were marines and sailors, i think the jets at that time was flown by navy pilots too

  • @MontezumaUH60

Only the Marines actually served aboard ships, the Army and Air Force prefer land and air respectfully, though I do know the Army has some of its own sea going transports crewed by Army Personnel.

Why do you think the Iowa-class Battleships had some Eagle, Globe, and Anchors on some of their turrets?

They were manned by Marine Gunners!

  • @FLJBeliever1776 well I was wondering because the army does have units that go to sea on carriers and amphibs on occasion

  • @MontezumaUH60

    Ack!

Pressed the wrong button, but yeah, the Army has spent since about the 50s or 60s learning Amphib Warfare while the Marines already know it since they were founded.

Why else are they called Marines?

My Arse Rides In Navy Equipment.

Navy - a beer happy taxi service, only with guns.

Air Force - Even with guns, they're still a fancy flying club.

  • @MontezumaUH60 ANYONE on board is subject to Neptune's tradition....I know of civilian contractors going thru it....and I have seen first hand two Us Army officers being introduced to Us Navy tradition, our Marines on board had a field day with them.

  • @MontezumaUH60 I was aboard a cruiser and we had a coast guard detachment aboard. They got their butts beat!!!

  • That was great :o)

  • This is politiacally incorrect on so many levels I can't count them all. Bet you couldn't get away with any of this stuff nowadays. Certainly not in the Canadian Navy. (Sorry - that's the Maritime Command of the Canadian Unified Forces.)

  • Good thing this tradition is part of the United States Navy.

  • ian, shellback initiation goes on today. Sorry if your tender sensibilities are offended. Simple solution, stay away. Let Sailors through. By the way, I am not PC. The constitution does not say that I have to be. My duty was to defend my country, not some half assed idea!!=Stefan=

  • So much for irony. I thought the parenthetical comment would make it clear.

  • ian, you have to work on your irony skill. And I am still not PC! I have always wondered about that. We all consider politicians to be liars and cheats. So, to be PC, I have to lie and cheat? You guessed it, I am not a fan of Bill and Hillary. And now we have Obama, God help us. You know? When the media realises that he is Not the Messia, What will they do to him? I truly feel sorry for the guy. I'll bet that Mccain is celebrating that he lost. =Stefan=

  • chengloki: Man, Obama was never the "messiah" (correct spelling) but he is a whole lot better than Cheney who is still looking for WMD's and is Prancing on Fox. And hey, Bush claimed mission accomplished in spring 2003, DUH! They were the losers! And it's "realizes" not your revisionist spelling. Ian, hang in there, ignore these people!

Ret USCG. And Navy Vietnam vet

  • Jim, so how do feel about owning GM, Government Motors?? So I misspelled. So damned what? The "Annointed One" is destroyng my country. Viet Nam? Call sign, "Snipe 1, out"!!! (Sorry, shallow water sailor). And, the UN claimed WMD's first. You can forget history, I can't!!(But then, that is what Obama Hussein, want's)!! =Stefan=

  • in the Royal Navy of Norway they celebrate the same, but just when they pass the polar circle. they throw a bucket of ice-cold seawater ower the sailors!

  • this version is amazing!

  • Never heard Anchor's Away played in ragtime before. I LIKE IT!

  • Sounds more like New Orleans Jazz, but I second your vote--I like it too! :-)

  • The Firehouse Five + 2 were a group of Disney animators who jammed on the weekend.

They were asked to play at a Disney function & their career was launched.

They appear in some Disney cartoons also.

  • i am a golden shellback

  • The cornet sound is good. I like the t-bone glisses and carinet solo. Overall very cool dixieland version.

  • Thanks man i appreciate it. And thanks for sharing it with us.

  • This is one funny slideshow here.
