@cavaleer Dilla could be your personal favorite, cause he is my personal favorite as well, but remember DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Rza will always be the greatest. Dilla ain't better than Premier man. The only thing Dilla has over Premier is that he is way more versatile. The samples Premier used are just insane. Think about it that genius found a sample back in the '20s for Nas' Represent. After 2000 no one could fuck with Dilla. Not Premier not Pete Rock, but Premier at his greatest > Dilla
@MidlandKruiskade Nahh bro. Pete Rock was actually on the cusp of greatness before he dropped out. Premier definitely had his moments but they're few and far between compared to Dilla. Busta Rhymes himself said it best. "Dilla found that pocket, that zone, that other producers had a hard time finding. He found it all the time." RZA had a few moments as well but in terms of consistently bangin, consistent variety of styles and sounds, no one's really close to Dilla. Maybe a couple, maybe. :-)
@cavaleer I can see you have a lot of hiphop knowledge and like I said Jay Dee definitely is my favorite producer. Pete Rock possibly made the greatest hiphop beat of all time T.R.O.Y. even Find A Way and Runnin' cant fuck with that in my opinion. It's true t hat Jay Dee was the most consistent. Still I think definitely DJ Premier is the greatest.
@cavaleer He did a lot of work in the 90s for Jeru the Damaja, Nas, Jay-Z (at his best), Biggie, Crooklyn Dodgers, KRS One, AZ, Big L and a lot of other artist like u probably already knew. Top 3 I really don't know, but I do have some favorites. Gang Starr - Mass Appeal, Nas - Nas is Like, NY State of Mind, Represent, actually the whole Moment of Truth album. DJ Premier really fell off after 2001 though and the only thing I hate about Premier is that he isn't versatile at all. Same technique
@MidlandKruiskade But my favorite producers remain J Dilla, Prince Paul, Madlib, Nujabes and Extra P. It's just something I can't deny about who's the best. You are right about the bassline no one has such a sick bassline like Pete Rock had. You can see Jay Dee definitely was influenced by Pete. No one could touch Dilla though' when it comes to drums. The most overrated is Dr. Dre his work was never fantastic and he used ghostproducers. RIP Guru, Nujabes and J Dilla
@MidlandKruiskade Yeah, I had just arrived in NYC the summer of '93 when "Come Clean" dropped. At the time it was groundbreaking. Still bangs too. My top Premier beats are "Too Deep", "Take Two and Pass", "In Memory Of", "Check the Technique", "Dwyck", "Come Clean".... So what exactly happened between him and Guru? That thing was tragic all-around.
@cavaleer Just like you I don't know, but it's a shame. I read that Guru had alcohol problems and DJ Premier couldn't care, but I don't believe it. If i look at Premier he was like a brother for Guru. It's a shame. The beats you mentioned are great, it's the time where DJ Premier used to be jazzy and way more versatile. A lot of people also blindly think Moment of Truth is the best Gang Starr album, if you ask me it's Step in the Arena, closely followed by Daily Operation. What about you?
@MidlandKruiskade Yeah, Moment of Truth he was already in decline, both of them were really. You could hear it. I'm with you on Moment of Truth and Daily Operation. I'd say Daily Operation was both of their creative peaks. Just deep, strong, multiple styles, really showed the possibilities of hip-hop, and Guru's not the greatest lyricist but he and Premier had this pocket together that was superb. Similar to Eric B and Rakim's 2nd album or EPMD's Business Never Personal, In The Pocket.
@cavaleer Guru isn't the greatest, but he is one of my personal favorites as well and although he ain't the best he is a great lyricist. I would say the greatest would be the Genius GZA, Rakim or Nas. Liquid Swords, Paid in Full and Illmatic were and still are lyrical masterpieces. In Daily Operation their styles matched perfectly. I think of Step in the Arena as the best, because you saw DJ Premier actually experimenting styles and Guru got better and better on that album. Both are classics!
@cavaleer John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Bud Powel and a lot more, but those are one of my favorites. I like your vision on music as well. What about Soul? I love me some Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke songs. I listen to a lot of Earth, Wind and Fire as well.
@MidlandKruiskade Oh yeah, all the classics. You should check out some Monk if you haven't. Pure, unadulterated genius. Also there's a lot of unreleased Coltrane from his peak, final years with the Quartet, live performances, floating around on youtube. If you like his final years and what they were doing with music these recordings are utterly priceless. Search for John Coltrane "Vigil" and "Chim Chim Cheree" and "Out of This World". Mind-bending. Puts everything in perspective.
@MidlandKruiskade Be prepared to have your mind bent. haha Honestly I have to to take a break from listening to those live performances because it's too difficult to listen to other music after listening to them.
@cavaleer Man I loved it. I think I already heard of his name, but don't know for sure. John Coltrane makes great music. Man times change. I fucking hate music now. The good die young and most garbage rappers are sitting on their money.
@MidlandKruiskade The thing I think about Dilla which is really a shame is that he fucked with the right dudes at a wrong time. A Tribe Called Quest fell off after J Dilla joined The Ummah, The Pharcyde fell off a bit Labcabincalifornia and De La Soul also fell off @ Stakes is High. And it's funny cause to me these 3 are J Dilla's greatest beats. #1. Pharcyde - Runnin #2. ATCQ - Find A Way #3. De La Soul - Stakes is High it's just that these groups fell of at the moment.
been in the music biz for 30 years plus ,and i can quite honestly say this is one of my top 10 tracks of all time! There is so much emotions in what Dilla did ,which is what made me gravitate towards the brother. But lets' not forget that before Dilla was quest, before parliament was james brown none less the genius! My god i never stop missing this brother !
Play this joint at my funeral when I "Flyyy" to meet my Wife in Heaven. R.I.P Dilla. Thank you for inspiration and I'll see you there too with Ipod to store your new joints you made. ONE!
Im spaced out & wit dis room,I'll explore new worlds cuz swirls of violence & lack of knowledge/got me payn homage 2 no goddess, farthest from da target, beast wit dis bull'seye.who's I?/just a humble servant dats still curbn, swervin n da street,D.U.I.'s my intials,Death Underneath I,it's essential dat I notice black cuz I know darkness & light, fam,is da value pack/self needs 2 "strap" it on cuz people tryn 2 "screw" me all type of ways, needless 2 say,da devil's tryn 2 relate 2 me leave thee alone
I have a spiritual Father that'll slaughter ya murderous tactics/drastic "measures" Lucifer takes so da "yard" is placed under my "feet" to "inch" up my crease & defeat my peace/decease my peak cuz a high reach,I need to seek, praising I need 2 b cuz He said He'll never leave me/please see me with mercy eyes and gracious hands so the chance I stand b4 u as a sinful man,I'll b covered by your goodness
I could stay afloat for a while like a bobber off a boat, cuz when I drown you make a sound like i was the last fish youd eva found. I compose myself loyaly workin for u like u was royalty and one day day I broke free into the sea life wasnt what it used to be feelin so contemporary amongst the big blue trees, chasin fish on a string like I was searchin the scene, but I floated taking in sounds seeing fish frown touching zeus's crown only to realise to my demise I ended up chillen with fries...
I just have to say that J Dilla rocked my life, he truly changed my vision of music, he inspired me everyday, i got to listen his music every time, bad days, good days, i'm always thinking about how he was influent for hip hop, what he gives to us and to me in this particular case, he was a genius, he was ahead of his time, i swear i listen Preemo, Pete Rock, Nottz, Large Pro, 9th, but when i listen to Dilla, my mind is blowing up. Peace to everyone, make your life better everyday. RIP Dawg
Sample is Caravan- "Bobbing Wide" the song that comes RIGHT AFTER dirty smelly little oik on their album. Check it, it's actually a really nice song in itself:
i swear to god the other night i was havin a dream and this beat was playin throughout the dream. i was on this spaceship/plane thing hovering over this weird alien civilization.....shit was the best dream i ever had....
@seboufdu59 you sound like a 6 year old, damn some people are immature as hell....posting all kind of lame stories, letters, opinions, poems n shit......fucking hell
I don't know...this beat is kind of somewhat naked...he just put the beat on a loop for 3 minutes. Although, the beat is dope...i wouldn't mind seeing a little more of instruments or at least elemental variation in the music(like Pete Rock does).
@cradleofjohannes Dilla is an engineering GOD! if you are looking for more instrumentals and less repetitiveness, get on that Donuts album. this track was made for someone to rhyme over.
what drives me nuts is people who talk about dilla say he's TOO creative, needs to simplify it so ppl can rap. then he makes a beat where it's easier to rap over, and then people say it's too repetitive.
Their is not one person that wouldn't nod to this. I truly beleive if you played this for a deaf person and put that person in front of a speaker the rhythme of the vibration make them nod their head... Seriously! ( No disrespect to anyone )
@XmycamarogotuhatinX DAMN OL BITCH ASS NIGGA! Every Dilla Joint i go to your bitch ass is on there talkin some type of bullshit. GO SIT ON A FUCKING RUSTY NAIL...IM SURE NO ONE WILL CARE...Damn Bitch Get off the hatin Tip...YOU WORKIN FOR THE GOVERNMENT? stop hatin bitch nobody gives a fuck who you like bitch..YOU BLOWIN OUR HIGH BITCH!
theres probably only a few mcs who could do this beat justice, but even if they could write a worthy verse i would prefere they didnt, i think this is one masterpiece that should be left alone to let the soul listen 2 alone. this that space music!! RIP DILLA!
well if its a masterpiece u shouldent rap on its like putting sprinkles on the best ice cream con uve ever had its gonna mess it up and i cant stand when people fuck up good beats and rhibac wtf r u tlkn bout
plz plz plz nobody rap to thease beats man i hate people who come in here just rappin to beats they dont know about just listen and worship what this man has put out for u
"rappin to beats they don't know about"? I'm pretty sure everyone that has rapped to Jay Dee's beats on these videos are probably hip hop heads (most of them by the way). Dilla is still a hidden gem, that a lot of people don't know about. If people choose to spit something to one of these masterpieces, let them do so, don't bash them because you don't like it. Don't even scroll down the page, if that's the case. I know, for one, that Dilla's music inspires me in everything that I do in life.
when i first heard this, i had to leave to room and come back just to figure out what the fuck was going through dilla's mind when he did this masterpiece ... i still get all screw-faced when i hear this shit!
With Dilla's absence no one can produce his quality the bar is too high. For Dilla it wasn't about just making beats......it was about mastering his craftmanship.
ny the place that i rest, young and broke, smoke weed and stay away from the coke, for some niggas thats the way to money, hustle hard, fuck bitches, and push dope, tight fuckin beat!
....See that boy FLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
bumpin shit....top shelf....this man was a pure musical being....its always the real ass niggas that gotta leave us early...all these fake cats are still makin records while we have this to keep jay dee in our hearts and minds.
jay dee's beats just evoke so much emotion. look at how he turned that uptempo sample into such a laid back, smooth joint. a talent truly unmatched by the artists we are left with. but his legacy lives on, even stronger after his death. R.I.P. J Dilla aka Jay Dee 1974-2006-Forever

I don't know...this beat is kind of somewhat naked...he just put the beat on a loop for 3 minutes. Although, the beat is dope...i wouldn't mind seeing a little more of instruments or at least elemental variation in the music(like Pete Rock does).
But nevertheless, Dilla got skillz
cradleofjohannes 1 year ago
@cradleofjohannes Dilla is an engineering GOD! if you are looking for more instrumentals and less repetitiveness, get on that Donuts album. this track was made for someone to rhyme over.
what drives me nuts is people who talk about dilla say he's TOO creative, needs to simplify it so ppl can rap. then he makes a beat where it's easier to rap over, and then people say it's too repetitive.

I know, for one, that Dilla's music inspires me in everything that I do in life.

jay dee's beats just evoke so much emotion. look at how he turned that uptempo sample into such a laid back, smooth joint. a talent truly unmatched by the artists we are left with. but his legacy lives on, even stronger after his death. R.I.P. J Dilla aka Jay Dee 1974-2006-Forever
