The issue is the symbols used in the film and the metaphors resemble real life in an allegorical way this causes a shift in perception that ultimately leads you to believe humans are no good destroyers and we kill mother nature.
Though I have spoken on this issue before, this interview does not show the whole picture of why Avatar fans experence depression it only speaks about people that attach to the "fantasy" aspects of the film, Avatar was designed to invoke an emotional responce and running under the "fantasy shell" are refrences that directly tie in and relate with "real" issues like hometree and 9-11, We see this example and some form a "very strong" connection betwean them and its no suprise they feel sadness.
"I don't think it's about the movie....." What an idiot that commentator was. Maybe she thinks people automatically think about their own selves {like she must do} when they see a movie like Avatar. I myself never saw it on the Big Screen but I know about the many, many people who left the theatre feeling very depressed. Not all,but a good many did. I just find that fascinating in itself. The 3-D glasses just increased the effect in a major way and added to it.
The Native Americans had the perfect way of living. Jews came along and turn the entire northern continent into a fucking strip mall and parking lots.
Actually, you would be surprised just how fantastical this movie may seem to some people. It's very easy to see it as ridiculous, and from a straight-on point of view it is, but throw a person into a confined space all by themselves for a year with no contact? You can count that at the end of the ordeal, the person would either be talking to themselves, seriously traumatised, or quite possibly torn their own throats out. This is an extreme example, but the human mind is a complecated thing. Thus
I guess it has something to do with the glasses. I watched this movie without the 3D shit and I did not get depressed. People, watch the movie without 3D shit! Makes you less emo....
i dont think we as human beings are living the way we were designed 2, we are on a hamster wheel work buy and consume, never really enjoying life, are you happy being in debt? fixing your shit car when something breaks every 6 months? going to your shit job? listening to assholes at work? we are all pretty much living the same life and i dont think that we necessarily have to live this way
People are fucked up, they need to open their eyes to the world, our planet is incredible and they just want fucking Pandora because it's big and glowy
if a silly movie is enough to make someone go suicidal then they should go for it, if something this silly is enough to drive people then they wont stand much of a chance in the real world anyway.
Many arrogant souls here, This world will keep making images of the hereafter, We as people need to work hard to be the best we can be for God and always remember this shitass world is temporary, we need to work for the next, if u dont wana beleive in that, then carry on living it up like your doing now.
I can't believe Avatar was depressing for some people. I get depressed for small things, and avatar didn't get me depressed. When I saw it I just felt normal like any other movie. But, a movie that was depressing for me was shutter island and inception. I hate those movies. I don't knw what was it that made me feel depressed? Hmmmm.... Oh well!!
It depresses me that people are stupid enough to be THAT affected by such a worn out story. There are much better movies out there to get depressed over.
As open minded as I am, I can't believe this is a real argument and/or topic.
When You live in a world where everyone is a consumer wage slave with a mall consciousness, that is depressing.
The movies has nothing to do with it, other than perhaps showing You an alternative perception of reality called Gaia Consciousness aka Cosmic Consciousness or Oneness making You realize that we as humans are merely a microcosm within the great microcosm of Universal creation and are not separate from it.
I am shocked some people get depressed. It is just a movie. The story has been told before. The movie had a beautiful heavenly world in it,but there are plenty of amazing places on earth, just go find them. It does wake us up to how complicated and crazy our lives have become though. We need to learn how to get off the merry go round once in awhile. Get away from the internet, video games and TV because it rewires our brains in the worst ways by creating new addictions.
I'm tired of people asserting that anyone with a vaguely abnormal psychological issue has a mental disability. To some, life IS boring after being immersed in fantasy. Being able to relate two worlds you're experienced, deciding the fake one is better, and experiencing a genuine depression over that, doesn't make a person 'mentally unstable.' It is something anyone with a mind creative enough to delve into a movie (or books in my case) might experience.
James Cameron is a genius if he can change peoples lives through a movie. Shit, i wish i could live on Pandora but shit happens, i can't so might as well just change your own life instead of living in this fantasy land.
i wasnt depressed but i did get a sense of anger. forcing natives out of their home is very common even until today .. and we cant ignore that the fact we as a society treat our planet like crap .. depressed? no. shaking my head at humanity . ohhh yea.
Anyone who gets depressed by this movie needs to get out of thier mom's basements and look outside. Take a hike or a road trip and see the world is a much more beautiful and tangible place than anything a movie could make up. Sure the movie was pretty but their are PLENTY of things in the real world to awe over. If your sad you're never going to see a glow in the dark fern then maybe you should kill yourself.
@italia1463 Obviously your not too heart warming if you don't have any sympathy for people who commit suicide due to depression. Depression can comes from many different sources, watching a movie or reading a book can force someone to look in the mirror and realize who sad their life is. You are a cold person.
@Telecasterpunk No, im really a heart warming person. one of my best friends killed himself a year ago. i see some people scraping at the bottom of the barrel living a shitty life just to support their kids and yet they still carry on. i just don't find any reason to get depressed at this movie. Our world is beautiful. it really is. Depression is one thing an i know cus it runs in my family. But...something like this is no reason to kill yourself.
Post-movie depression is pretty common actually, especially in when it comes to the "fantasy" genre.
It's not so much that I wanna be part of the world, it's just that its depressing to let go of the characters and the world. I connect with the characters, their story and their struggles. I guess when you're really immersed, your brain doesn't differentiate between fantasy and reality. For a short brief of time, you accept these characters as real friends and sometimes letting go is a bit sad
Hopefully this goes somewhere, obviously it was a wake up call to some people but they took their lives instead of helping the cause. The fucking human race has become a cancer to this world instead of living one with it. Don't worry those people will be wiped of this planet soon enough if they don't wake up.
The only people that are effected by this stupid movie are nerds wishing they were a tall smurf. Also the cat like features and Disney eyes are FUCKING RETARDED.
Perhaps the "Entitlement Generation" deserves its name after all. When I saw "Mary Poppins" in 1964 or "The Sound of Music in 1965," I was not "depressed" because my nanny couldn't slide down a staircase bannister or my Catholic Nun sister couldn't sing like Julie Andrews. I am "depressed" by the REALITY of becoming homeless after 30 years of paid & volunteer work as a pianist & college instructor due to physical disabilities.
I suggest you all call 1-800-READ-A-BOOK (on your $300 iPhones) and check out Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath." Or, for the impatient, see Burgess Meredith in the original B/W movie, for which you don't need 3-D glasses.
@VeldinJoe there are more realistic movies that have shown that and ppl still don't get it so believe me they will never get it or do anything about it! we are living with shit like illuminati and freemason among us, how the hell are we gonna wake up in a better world? we will always have to come back to "this" world no matter what so ppl just stop yapping and looking for excuses and just do smth about it already! how many bloodshed do we still have to go thru dammit, these ppl r pissing me off!
These idiots only realized just how pointless our lives are after they saw a damn movie. It shows you just how far we've fallin, we need a movie to remind us life is boring, but rather than doing something about it they complain. To all you hardcore avatar fans who only now realized how shitty things are you have a few options, get a more realistic goal and work toward it or paint your self blue and run out and live in the woods, trust me, no one is stopping you.
The people who got depressed over this movie are obviously reading the bible wrong or are just plain sheep. How could this movie have more impact than the fantasy of religion? XD
why cant I eat bugs and fruit, live in a tree and ride around on birds that poop all over my stuff instead of living in an airconditioned house stocked with pizza rolls soda satellite and wii and fly in a nice clean comfy airliners...mannnn I'm totally bummed
Those who are getting depressed over Avatar are more simple-minded than scientologists and creationists put together. HOW CAN ANYONE GET DEPRESSED OVER A SILLY MOVIE LIKE AVATAR? OVER CARDBOARD CUT-OUT CHARACTERS. OVER BLACK AND WHITE STORY.
Its just a movie. I new from when I saw the teaser. But its just an opinion. Sure, I thought the same thing after seeing it but I'm not depressed. It just makes you think that the world can be better than this. I mean, we live in a world with terrorism, racism and hatred for one another, Justin Bieber and "New wave" hip hop music, consumerism and imperialism, politics and false democracy, and a hypocritical Disney Channel (God I fucking hate that Miley Cyrus).
its because people "wake up" and realize what a piece of shit the world they live in, full to money hungry assholes, hypocritical and corrupt religious groups, and that they live in an asshole country that was founded off of the mutilation, rape, and murder of MILLIONS of peaceful indians, who welcomed us with open arms. Fuck America, and Fuck You.
(Continued) The movie moves people mentally and emotionally on a fundamental level and brings them back to their roots. The CGI is art and if art is powerful enough it can do some crazy shit.
It's not really depression. It's more or less like one of the other dudes said, a hangover. It's more like Melancholy due to the fact that the person who saw the movie felt like they changed as a person but when they get back to real life they feel powerless and like they have no control over their life leaving them depressed.
What happened to Hope AND Change? Yes WE Can! Still in Iraq along with hundreds of others, escalated troops in Afghanistan. Sounds like the new boss is the same as the old boss. If we could only go primitive, worship mother earth. Ride flying lizards over the mountains. Jack ourselves into trees, to feel ALIVE. Well I'm afraid Big Brother has other plans for you sunshine. How about a nice shovel ready job? We will all be eating peaches and cream. If you do not like peachesandcream, YOU WILL.
Whoever thinks the people depressed after seeing this should kill themselves needs to open their mind and think of what makes you say that. Your telling someone to end their life because you disagree with their thoughts. I saw somewhere that humans are like viruses "consuming, breeding, spreading for no real purpose other than to survive." there is no NWO there is only a virus that needs to be taken care of to save the host(earth) we used up what we needed to evolve here, time to leave.
This movie left me looking wierd after i saw it..idk why i felt depress and stress out..probly because it was that good..idk ..i feel like humans aint shit.
Gota love how people assume the people that get depressed over this movie are no life losers. I play high level soccer, am in honors classes, have plenty of friends and an awsome fam, yet I still felt depression after this too. U haters could at least try to understand. The purpose of the movie is to make us open our eyes and see what is really there and what we truly believe in. Sure it's just a movie, and although it MIGHT not be "real" it sure as hell is real for others, including me
@riomanty Hi, I just wanted to tell you, being sad its ok, but being depressed is a serious medical condition, everyone who felt depressed must not take this lightly, you should really look out for help...
@riomanty Yeah. I had a good friend who was depressed for about a week and a half after watching it in 3D. It really gets on my nerves how ignorant people are about it and they don't try to understand it.
Picture this(How my bud described it). Imagine being in the perfect dream where you were happy and waking up the next morning knowing that dream will never happen. It kills you.
As an art it is moving, it moves some more than others.
tbh, i like earth a litle bit more than pandora, i appreciate not getting eaten alive and being able to see 10 feet in all directions without a tree or giant fern in my way...
Funny that the people in the video don't ever mention the possibility that one reason why some people may feel depressed about the movie is because we do destroy civilizations in the name of the market. This movie does in my opinion show the differences between a culture that believes in the secular religion of capitalism and a culture that has spiritual connection to all life. The movie allows the opportunity to reevaluate priorities.
well people finaly are seeing what the world is suppose to be like instead of living in a cubical. See thats how I feel when I smoke weed, everything is so brilliant and then when I come down its like, back to the new world order. Slavery
@esh325 dude this movie rocked avatar kicked ass. thats why it made more than 1.3 billion dollars already. obviously you need to open your eyes. this movie had the best cg of all time
This planet is the proto-type. There is no other planet that matter. There is no Pandora, Utopia, Euphoria, Nirvana or Atlantis, this is it. We have got to take care of this one or we lose. The problem is we keep f***ing it up. So for thosewho feel depressed and suicidal, while your saving the whales how about saving the planet as well. Take up a cause to save this earth, maybe you'll feel better.
@gettinaway7 Me too. I know that this is real life...but it can still be adjusted. But everyone is ingnorant and stubborn. War in Irao, terrorism, imperialism, socialism, etc.
i think the reason people are feeling depression is because pandora is so perfect and so peaceful in a sence but then u look at what we have done to our home planet n they see how much more bueatiful pandora is
I probably don't have a soul - i watched that movie once and, although it is a good movie and impressed by the effects, i really didn't feel any differences between 2d and 3d. - it all look the same. Maybe i just looked at the film too critically instead of enjoying one heck of a good movie. Any ideas to why?
@mryeti94 You're right dude. Today, films are made only for money. Avatar was a personal dream project for James Cameron for many years, even while working on the first Terminator.
I completely understand this. I felt similar sometimes. Not quite ever this extreme but still very similar. I didn't like Avatar much at all, but I've felt this way after seeing other movies or reading other books... Really what it was that made me depressed though wasn't the movie, on the surface it was, but deeper it was more. But the fact there wasn't anything in my life I could be proud of. Nothing to dedicate myself to. Then I picked up my new hobby, homicide, and now I'm 10 times happier!
The real reason they're drpressed is beacuse the movie shows just how much power-hungry humans fuck up the world, and have fucked up this world. It makes them depressed that the world that we live in was once like the world in the move, where people actually had respect for nature and eachother; and how this world now is at a point of no return... it's like a dead end, nothing in this world actually has any relevance anymore, everyone's just a drone now - You learn, you work, you die - That's it
omg this was hilarious hahahahahaha If you get depressed from this movie you were already fucked big time. Stop blaming your bullshit on other stuff. YOU are the one who is fucked. Listen to mike's comment over and over again, hopefully that will stick in the thick head of yours.
There's bigger problems in life and a movie isn't one of them. There's people out there who are depressed and poor because they lost their job due to the economy...and these fuckers are depressed because of a movie? come on!
man o man... people these days. maybe they should kill themselves for even making stupid comments like "depression after avatar." fuckin weenies. oh and p.s... 3D isnt that impressive, i would rather watch bluray
Maybe these pathetic depressed over a movie motherfuckers should just kill themselves.

I suggest you all call 1-800-READ-A-BOOK (on your $300 iPhones) and check out Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath." Or, for the impatient, see Burgess Meredith in the original B/W movie, for which you don't need 3-D glasses.

o it took this movie to make people realize this is a harsh grey world, i really can just read current events and find that out
VeldinJoe 1 year ago

(Continued) The movie moves people mentally and emotionally on a fundamental level and brings them back to their roots. The CGI is art and if art is powerful enough it can do some crazy shit.
LtFang299 1 year ago 16
It's not really depression. It's more or less like one of the other dudes said, a hangover. It's more like Melancholy due to the fact that the person who saw the movie felt like they changed as a person but when they get back to real life they feel powerless and like they have no control over their life leaving them depressed.
LtFang299 1 year ago
It's a hangover not depression!

If you do not like peachesandcream, YOU WILL.
vultureofawhore 1 year ago 3
Whoever thinks the people depressed after seeing this should kill themselves needs to open their mind and think of what makes you say that. Your telling someone to end their life because you disagree with their thoughts. I saw somewhere that humans are like viruses "consuming, breeding, spreading for no real purpose other than to survive." there is no NWO there is only a virus that needs to be taken care of to save the host(earth) we used up what we needed to evolve here, time to leave.

Sure it's just a movie, and although it MIGHT not be "real" it sure as hell is real for others, including me
riomanty 1 year ago 3
@riomanty Hi, I just wanted to tell you, being sad its ok, but being depressed is a serious medical condition, everyone who felt depressed must not take this lightly, you should really look out for help...
Hassanbeltran 1 year ago
@riomanty Yeah. I had a good friend who was depressed for about a week and a half after watching it in 3D. It really gets on my nerves how ignorant people are about it and they don't try to understand it.
Picture this(How my bud described it). Imagine being in the perfect dream where you were happy and waking up the next morning knowing that dream will never happen. It kills you.
As an art it is moving, it moves some more than others.

The movie allows the opportunity to reevaluate priorities.
marshrunrun 1 year ago
well people finaly are seeing what the world is suppose to be like instead of living in a cubical. See thats how I feel when I smoke weed, everything is so brilliant and then when I come down its like, back to the new world order. Slavery

I probably don't have a soul - i watched that movie once and, although it is a good movie and impressed by the effects, i really didn't feel any differences between 2d and 3d. - it all look the same. Maybe i just looked at the film too critically instead of enjoying one heck of a good movie. Any ideas to why?

mryeti94 1 year ago
@mryeti94 You're right dude. Today, films are made only for money. Avatar was a personal dream project for James Cameron for many years, even while working on the first Terminator.
whitewolves1992 1 year ago
