As someone who's doing comedy, it's very very reassuring to see a comedian as good as stewart lee with a massive setlist written on the back of his hand.
hey demonicfooker- Stewart lee is the litmus paper of friends. If your mates don't get him, yep; get rid. leave them with Michael Mcintyre and Lee Evans. Let them rot.
To me, the best was the "Stand Up" episode with the extended ramble about the toaster and the receipts - never has so much been done with so little material.
I love his new direction of what you might call "anti-comedy", though it's not really so new, just an extension of his previous style.
But the less like "real comedy" it is, the funnier it gets. Could anyone but Stew reduce people to hysterics by repeating "keep the receipts" while strumming a guitar?
If you have seen his live shows and DVDs, in which he prepared alot of this material, you may find the repetition of material somewhat galling. However, this was on BBC 2. A far wider audience. It doesn't lose its relevance and is modified enough to fit the context. Best stand up/sit down that has been broadcast for a long time. Thanks Stew. Stew, like an egg stew!
I actually love the second season, sure, he drew some material from previous stand ups, but I guess that it's just not manageable to pull out three hours of material in such a short time, there are comedians who barely manage 1 hour each year. Plus, there is an underlying concept, the episodes connect a lot more than in the first season. I think this season, especially episode 4 contains some of the finest stand up in years.
I have to say I was a massive Stewart Lee fan but this series was particularly poor... part of me hopes it was all some sort of clever ploy to deliberately not be funny? The crisps episode for example... surely!
@Simonskilamb Agreed. And in his book "How I learned...", he mentions how he likes to draw a line under material, and then not perform it again. Shame then that this series seems to draw so heavily on material available on most of his live DVDs.
I think he did the second series on the premise that he got another 2. Shame that BBC bury it at the slot that used to be taken by the open university
