I love the graffiti credits - they just abound with all these references, really brilliant. Like Asclepius at 0:49, followed by Minerva (Athena) springing forth from Jupiter's (Zeus') head, the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, and I think there may even be a nod earlier at 0:11 to the Rape of Lucretia but that could be geeky me extrapolating. Still, this whole sequence is very creative. :)
By the way, isn't the bull's head at 1:01 kind of reminiscent of one of the Guernica bulls?
@firebreeze That is, I wonder if Picasso wasn't subconsciously inspired by Roman graffiti. :) Take my musings with a grain of salt though, I'm an ex-Classics student, not an art history major.
They were going to make the third and fourth season about the rise of Christianity. I hate it to end here, but I would have also hated it to turn into to a lame story about Jesus, when there is so much interesting to tell about the Empire of Augustus, let alone the emperors who followed him (sanity did not run in the family), and so much character design went into character like Titus Pullo, Octavian etc.
Acompanhei TUDO de "Roma". Os "making off" todos, as reportagens todas sobre a série. É inesquecível. Gostaria que tivéssemos mais! I followed EVERYTHING about "Rome". Every making off etc. It's unforgetable! I wish we had more!
This theme is RIVETING. Add the figures apparently coming to life on the walls, and this is one of the most dynamic openings I've ever seen -- and the show that followed was DAMN GOOD too.... the work of Kevin McKidd and James Purefoy was solid, week to week ...... BRAVO
The opening credits for this and Carnivale deserve awards. What phenominal work! I would imagine the same teams, or at least some of the same people worked on both.
It seems that many shows are doomed after season 2 with HBO. So far Rome and Carnivale. It is unfortunate there were not enough smart people watching them. I bet they will start to have only reality crap pretty soon. It is so hard to find anything good on television now. "sigh"
If there is one thing HBO gets right is the opening credits songs. I have yet to dislike one of them - from the Sopranos, to Sex and the City, to John Adams, Deadwood - all awesome! and of course...ROME.
Although Showtime is finally catching up with The Tudors.
Two splendid series with excellent performances. James Purefoy as Mark Antony going mad at the end of series two is one of the greatest performances I've seen in many years.
Seen the snake at 0:54 ? Remind you of something? :)
I agree, I, CLAVDIUS is a magnificent series, though I kind of miss the dynamic and the setting of Rome, as well as the intertwined stories of the plebs.
La mejor serie de la Historia :)

I'm responding a bit late, but you are correct. Same guy worked on the intro for Big Love and Game of Thrones as well.

I would consider "I, CLAVDIVS" as the third season in the Rome series. It's a bit old, but really well done. Go check it out.
antifuchs 4 years ago 13
Apparently HBO was inspired to do Rome because of the BBC's "I, Claudius", and that's partly why they worked so closely with the BBC on this series.
nokiaduck 3 years ago
Rome is actually better than "I , Claudius", and I say that as someone who adores the older series!
waivedwench 2 years ago
Although they're related, I think they're very different series in many ways, so it's difficult to say conclusively one is better than the other.
But of course if a person's tastes are closer to one series then for them it is better. :-)
