@Bobesque Autofocus isn't that slow. If you end up aiming the focus at some point where it can't focus then of course there is problems. Doesn't the rig allow the user to manual focus?
Cranes did not start with Touch of Evil. (though that is a great example) Look at some of the great horror b-movies of the 1930s from Universal. Very effective, understated use of jibs.

More of these! Also isn't there a system to use the focus of the camera by yourself? Having an assistant do it seems bit clumbsy.

@PsykoOps auto focus takes time. and usually it goes in and then out to find the perfect focus.
