I have had working golden retrievers for several years. Can someone explain to me why the darker colors in golden retrievers seem to be found only in working lines? I've just noticed that you never see a show dog with a dark coat.
This is primarily because the confirmation judges want to see the light colored goldens. Hunters favor the darker colored dogs but they will not place in the dog shows.
I do not get involved with confirmation but that is pretty much how that works.
Working line goldens are just so much prettier and "classic" than those tiny sow ones. Keep up the good work!

I always thought it was because of Holway Barty's influence on the working strains of the breed in this country.
But I've seen pics of golden retrievers working in Britain, and they tend to be the darker shades, too.
