Hi...I have a macbook pro 2011...I need to install Ubuntu Linux, but I cannot do it. I follow steps as on PC but I cannot do it...May you help me?...I don't want to virtualize...
Linux is awesome! Very compatible when it wants to be. Ubuntu is pretty good. Although that one looks like an older version. Switch to 10.10. I use Arch Linux and I say you should try that out if you get more into Linux. And good call using Windows in virtual machines. Lol. Also, awesome song!
@grThetrojan01gr Actually, Linux would help increase battery life. One of the many amazing features of Linux compatibilities. If you don't use Linux, I recommend trying it out. It is very compatible and amazing with all it can do. You can also run Linux on your old nearly-non-performing computers that you have nothing else able to fully run on it.
@TheJoshuaPChan *cough* I'm an active Linux user giving to the f/oss community as much as I can... I'm asking this because of the many problems I'm seeing guys at many forums have about linux/windowsXP/Non-MacOSX_operating_system and their MacBooks.
@iDude96 Due to cousin Rich's 8 year old step-daughter. Now, I will ask you, how the hell do you know the name of the song? I didn't have a clue. LOL!
@vilmo98 Ah, it's all good. Rich is a high level IT guy -- he runs Mac OS X, Linux, XP, and Windows 7 on that system so he can do maintenance and assist users of multi-platform systems in his infrastructure.
I think that's great, the running Linux on a mac, there might be like 7 people in the world who would do this. Although I have to say that you payed extra for the hardware...
@hellrazorforever lool ive tried both and i just prefer it and a portion of mac users and only about 1% of mac users would put ubuntu on there macs :) i doubt many mac users would ever but ubuntu on there macs. boot camp is ok but ubuntu is just not my cup of tea.
Linux is a complete waste of time. Seems like more people install it for the fun tricks rather than using it to work on. I can't be productive enough anyway with just open source software.
@stogi5959 XP -> extra penis xD. Mac OS is not shitty but needs time to know it. The big shitty thing in the latests OSes is maybe Vista. Always hungry for resources. At the moment Mac OS, almost all current Linux distros and Windows 7 are great operating systems so now users has a lot more choices than before.
i installed linux in my macbook but my webcam doesnt work and mic either i trying to use skype with them is there like drivers or somthing for this by the way its the same macbook
i plan to do the same change an apple os to linux free software forever :P everyone seems to be changing over to linux more and more, the people that don't understand why anyone would do that change don't understand that the apple makes alot of money on software and trys to root out competitors that gain access to the mac system
Ah Ubuntu... The only system i havent learned (out of the ones i love) cuz i havent figured out how to install drivers on wmware and cuz i dont have a pc atm....still.. the system is freaking nice ;)
@gytis156 My cousin, Richard, is part of an IT staff that administers a mixed batch of Mac OS, XP/Vista/7, and Linux workstations, as well as a slew of servers. He has ALL of the various operating systems on that laptop for the purposes of diagnostics and support. I posted this video, just to piss off my Mac friends. LOL!

@kurniasan yep, but only recently. Ubuntu isn't doing too bad, but the main reason it isn't listed as free software is because they endorse no-free software repositories. Their package manager contains a lot of non-free stuff and they don't care, it's a shame really :(
Nathan is completely ignorant. Just because a package manager contains non-free software doesn't make the operating system non-free. If people couldn't release a non-free application, most people would just give up.
@thewaainator I never said that was the only reason! The actual Linux kernel contains a shit loads of non-free blobs mainly consisting of wireless and graphics drivers. So that is the biggest reason why only a handful of GNU/Linux OSes are listed as free-software.
BUT, Ubuntu contains NO proprietary drivers installed by default. For instance, people with Broadcom wireless devices are unable to install their devices without finding their own drivers. Also people with nVidia and ATI graphics cards do not have drivers bundled into the system, and can only get their drivers by connecting to the internet where Ubuntu then searches for them.
@thewaainator The kernel is part of the os, if you took away the kernel it would not be an operating system, ubuntu is an operating system, take away the kernel and it is not. The kernel is part of ubuntu so ubuntu contains non-free software
@nathan8BIT, dude you have no idea what you talking about. Ubuntu has no proprietary software by default. And Ubuntu repository does not contain any proprietary packages. You have to add third party repository on your own. It is 100% GNU/Linux
@srki80 Check the GNU website to see why they don't support a lot of common distros. Here is a quote "Ubuntu provides specific repositories of nonfree software. Even if you don't use them, the default application installer will advertise nonfree software to you."
I love Mac too, a lot... But how I see u guys don't understand that Linux is considered the best OS. And that's not because of applications, ye Windows and Mac have good apps, but take in consideration, MacOS uses MicroKernel, kidding guys? MicroKernel! That reduces the power of the PC with 20%. Linux have the best Kernel! Because of his Kernel the Linux OS works better than any other OS. And ye, maybe Linux don't have apps, but he is the most powerful...
Actually, that laptop is used by cousin Rich to take care of systems where he works -- he needs multiple operating systems, so that laptop runs Mac OS X, Linux, as well as Windows XP and Vista. He probably has 7 on there now as well. He uses VMWare for his virtual environment.
i have a white macbook hanging around, it was a free fixer upper from a friend, its a few years old, and right now its about 60% done installing ubuntu 9.10, why not? :)
@isokessu Good question. Rich is an IT professional, working in a school district. He needs to support Mac OS X, XP, Vista, 7, and Linux, so, he virtualizes all of those operating systems on that laptop.
@adiblasi Please tell me what i software that is or w/e, im very impressed by the gui. Its just all around amazing please tell me what i need to do this. Im currently running windows 7 on my dell 1525. Thanks buddy.
running linux on a macbook.. its like you overpayed for a product then underused its software. not to say linux isnt a great operating system, rock solid. but the only reason i would consider a mac is its software.
Wow, thats a pretty cool rip-off of spaces....oooo water and fire?....Show me a 64bit OS like Snow Leopard that runs even half as efficient and I will be impressed.
@fakaras99 please stop spamming - you can't spell and you can't cover up that your just some kid because you type like one. if your not a kid you must be mentally retarded i mean come on you can't spell limited and "did you ever heard" does not make sense.
1) Nice effects...but its only fireworks, no good apps for linux :-(
----------
2) You stuck an ubuntu sticker in front of the apple logo??? You're not supposed to buy mac from the first place, you dont have good taste man, lol. No offend but this.......................
now they just have to start making worthwhile software for linux and it would be marketable to the masses. I'm talking CS4, etc. Until major software companies start porting to the linux platform it will be nothing more than a hobbyist pursuit.
I'm not saying that linux isn't a great choice for servers and a lot of software, especially web based software but the desktop user experience is sorely lacking utility.
The real sad thing is, linux with all that eye candy and more probably needs less RAM&processing cycle than a comparative Vista installation (which you need to fork over good money for).
no big deal lol most of people change mac for some linux based OS. my old ibook's mac os didnt last more than... dunno 3 days xD i used yellow dog linux. ;D mac os fails as bad as windows vista lol mac users will murder me for comparing mac to windows but... i like linux so i pwn you both windows and mac users :P
I can't get my MacBook to connect to my home wireless (AirPort) if I use it on Linux Ubuntu 9.04. It runs fine on WinXP and MacOSXLeopard, but it just won't connect wirelessly if I have Ubuntu9.04 on it. I guess previous versions of Ubuntu won't connect either.
I've found solutions on the Net, but they look complicated and time-consuming and without promise that I'll find a fix after all the time & effort.
I just want to be a plain user of my computer, not a geek user.
Thanks for that, but I did in fact want to make my MacBook a dual, or triple boot (ie WinXP, Ubuntu & MacOSLeopard). If it can only do 2, I'll exclude the MacOS.
I remember trying Ubuntu8.10 but it didn't have 9.04's easy+clear way of resizing/re-arranging/preparing a hard disk that included a MacOS partition (HFS?).
All my efforts ended with me having only 32GB of the MacBook's 110GB HD usable. I'm unable to "extend" the current Mac partition in any way now.
*I should add that I spent a lot of time Googling before asking questions. While it's often said that "there's no such thing as a stupid question", I think there IS when it comes to Linux advice, in that people like me should do our research first, to minimise on the time that volunteers like your good self need to spend on enquirers. And I certainly did as much research as I could, but came up with nought. (I remember reading about EFI, the "BIOS" of Macs).
Any websites u can point me2would be greatly appreciated.
I'm not happy with the Macs at all; not as great as I thought mine would be. It's often slow, applications crash... and this current problem of having the usable space on the HD shrunk to 32GB.
It doesn't end there; I'm unable to use the Ethernet cable--it keeps slipping out--ALL the MacBook "4.1" models have that problem. MacSupport drove me mad with rage .. just doesn't end
Where did you get that background?

running linux on a macbook.. its like you overpayed for a product then underused its software. not to say linux isnt a great operating system, rock solid. but the only reason i would consider a mac is its software.

the only annoying thing about this is setting up the boot loader, as apple boot loader wont recognize that a ubuntu parition is installed.

Wow, thats a pretty cool rip-off of spaces....oooo water and fire?....Show me a 64bit OS like Snow Leopard that runs even half as efficient and I will be impressed.
The1andonlyBYack 2 years ago 2
You just saw it... linux had "spaces" (UI) before macOS did Oo.
Ubuntu is capable of 64bit too.
TheSilentwarrior99 2 years ago
Ubuntu had "Spaces" before Spaces was even in the Mac OS.

linux had spaces before Ubuntu existed.

If you have a Mac, why would you choose between OSX and Linux? have Ubuntu and Snow Leopard on my MacBook and I love them both.
The real sacrilege is befouling such a beautiful machine with an abortion like Windows XP.
oraclecrank 2 years ago 5
@oraclecrank maybe Windows 7 with virtualization of Vista and XP loaded.

@fakaras99 please stop spamming - you can't spell and you can't cover up that your just some kid because you type like one. if your not a kid you must be mentally retarded i mean come on you can't spell limited and "did you ever heard" does not make sense.

Why stop there? I googled "recursive virtualbox" and got some pretty cool ideas.

1) Nice effects...but its only fireworks, no good apps for linux :-(

now they just have to start making worthwhile software for linux and it would be marketable to the masses. I'm talking CS4, etc. Until major software companies start porting to the linux platform it will be nothing more than a hobbyist pursuit.
I'm not saying that linux isn't a great choice for servers and a lot of software, especially web based software but the desktop user experience is sorely lacking utility.

Kudos to you fr making the linux look so cool!
The real sad thing is, linux with all that eye candy and more probably needs less RAM&processing cycle than a comparative Vista installation (which you need to fork over good money for).

Makes no difference....both are pretty much Unix variations anyway. Have to say i'm quite impressed the GMA 950 could handle those animations

Any help?
YGRoundNo2 2 years ago
You can try an older live - cd.
Some things changed in the wireless in 9.04

Thanks for that, but I did in fact want to make my MacBook a dual, or triple boot (ie WinXP, Ubuntu & MacOSLeopard). If it can only do 2, I'll exclude the MacOS.
I remember trying Ubuntu8.10 but it didn't have 9.04's easy+clear way of resizing/re-arranging/preparing a hard disk that included a MacOS partition (HFS?).
All my efforts ended with me having only 32GB of the MacBook's 110GB HD usable. I'm unable to "extend" the current Mac partition in any way now.
I thought Macs were easy.

(Following on from my last)
*I should add that I spent a lot of time Googling before asking questions.
YGRoundNo2 2 years ago
(Continuing from my last)
TY 4 your efforts though.
YGRoundNo2 2 years ago
lmao. Alright so. you found solutions online but you are lazy to take about 3 minutes to type some commands and compile?
If you don't want to do a little bit of work just to get wireless working don't even both running linux. go back to windows.
