  • such a beautiful young lady :)

  • DO U ADD GREASE AT ALL? SHOULD I NOT? OR SHOULD I ADD IT AT THE END?

  • You are so talented!

You make it look so easy. I am Black and I can braid a little and I have a 2 yo daughter and I was searching videos and came across yours and subbed right away!

I cannot cornrow...I love this alternative...or at least until I can get some more practice and get them looking neat. Thanks for sharing your talents. :-)

  • This is really cute! I love the style with the little flower beads. I'll try this on my younger niece's hair. Never heard of this type of braid before!

  • wow, this is really easy! I have really thin curly hair, and its near inpossible to cornrow. thanks!

  • Thank you, I did a new style today

  • I believe in African American culture these are called trail braids...

  • dang girl you are really talented .......no offense but your the only white person i have EVER seen not afraid to do a black persons head..i have girls in my cosmetology class that wont even try to learn...and btw im going to try this on my neice so thanks for the tip and seriously you are good at what you do :)

  • I love this style. I'm going to try it with my 2 year old daughter. Thanks for the ideas.

  • thanks for the idea of a new style! im gonna practice that in my niece's hair

  • Hi Katelynylyn, thanks for showing how to do box braids and piggy back braids. With box braids, does it matter if you braid under or overhand? Does one give a better finished look?

  • @DrDawnMarie - I think either way is fine. Over hand will have them laying down flat really nicely, under hand might make them pop up from the scalp a bit (more so with shorter hair). Try them both and see what you prefer.

  • This was very helpful. My neighbor has been braiding my 3 year old daughters hair for the past year and she's moving!!:( Now it's my turn....wish me luck!!

  • how do u do a simple braid can u please make a vidio of a simple braids

  • @ Katelynylyn not tryin to b funny but u about the only white girl i would let n my daugthers hair......love ur braids n different styles....where r u located??

  • @TheSabrina9260 - lol! Thanks! We live in Michigan :)

  • metal hair clips aren't good for black hair because they have sharp metal ends, just saying though.

  • That is so cool!

  • I have never heard of these braids before but I WILL be trying this on my daughter's hair. And the Christmas hair dos are soooo pretty. You got skillz hun :-)

  • very cute :)

  • Nice work!!!! That hair style must be working. Because that little girl hair is really long.

  • this is love. you do great work. The little girl is so cute and sweet.

  • You are a great teacher. do you show how you get the beads on the hair while doing a piggy back braid?

  • @moniquewhit - I do not have any videos about this. It depends on how thick the braids are. If they are small enough, I would put the beads on the way I always do with my beading tool. After I have braided up to the point where I am going to add the next section of hair, I will first slide on one bead and then add the next section of hair.

  • @Katelynylyn -IF the hair is to thick to fit through the bead hole, then you can take a little rubber band and stick it through the hole so that you have a bit of each end of the rubber band hanging out of each side of the bead. Basically like two loops. Now put the braid through the two loops of the rubber band. Hmmm..... I am terrible at these written explanations, That's why I make videos :)

  • is she biracial?

  • @TheLeeLerz - Nope she is Liberian

  • her hair looks so soft lol

  • So cute, I will try this on my little one.

  • Welcome to your new subsciber cause I never even heard of this hairstyle so I'm just gonna sit back and learn whatever you have to say so Thank You :)

  • i have a mixed race child white/mid-eastern.....they suit everyone of every nationality it took me a long time to learn but well worth it!!!

  • I like how you dont put much gel I have seen people just goop it on to where the hair was hard and dirty looking.

  • The one that came back into a ponytail with the beads in between each box was so cute and looked adorable on her! She's a beautiful little girl :) My daughter is only a year old and is almost completely bald still (lol its cute tho), but I can't wait to try some of your styles on her when she has some hair to experiment with so I'm subscribing. Thanks for all the cute ideas :)

  • You are so creative and patient!

  • girl, i wish you were on youtube when my daughter was little...i kept her hair cute, but girl...you put me to shame...you r going to have me go and buy me a mannequin head or as we call in hair school, a baby, and learn your techniques. i have a son whom i braid his hair...you have inspired me. thanks

  • I'm an African American mother of a 5 y.o. & I can't braid/plait AT ALL! lol However you have definitely inspirired me to quit paying people to do my daughter's hair & learn. Those little girls are blessed to have you! Keep up the great work!

  • LOL - I agree! No more paying people to do my girls' hair too.

I have 3 girls (7/5/5) and I cringed at the thought of doing their hair because my cornrow technique took way too long. I learned a faster way from a friend and with Katelynlyn's cute styles, we are good to go for the new school year. God bless you Katelynlyn and your darling girls- and please keep those videos comin'!

  • You do such a great job! your amazinG!

  • im a white girl n i do braids too

    for my friends

i was braiding my somali friends hair yesterday

and his ethiopian friends came over and were like [WHAAAAAAT?] =O

lol now i have to braid there hair today =)

    i love yur style

    yur really talented...honestly...better than me

    lol

  • Hi Mrs. Katelynlyn,

How would you create the last couple of styles in the box braids going across the head from ear to ear?

  • aw... they look so adorable! Good job!

  • I love this style... It will look nicer if you start the first braid as a cornrow for the tip. Also its better if you use QP gel on her hair. Great Job/Video

  • the cornrow is a good idea

  • if u are worried about friz there is friz serom

  • a white girl doing this ......wow!

  • look at all that pretty hair. You are amazing!!!

  • I wish you were my mother when I was growing up :o( You take very good care of their hair. Beautiful styles and an excellent tutorial :o)

  • wow! u r fantastic

  • I love the way you do her hair what products do you use.

  • Omg Is that a white girl doing a little black girls hair? That is TOO cute! but when you part her hair it brings back some bad childhood memories for me because those combs used to hurt my head so much because my hair is so thick! lol

  • that's her adoptive mother lol not just some "white girl"

  • O.o sorry! thats cool

  • I adopted twin girls and had no clue how to do their hair. For me, I was an 80's child so it was all about the Aquanet and backcombing. Still not a pro at cornrowing, but I'm practicing. These piggy backs are my cheat. Veil style is awesome too. Your daughters are beautiful. I'd be interested to see how you started their braidlocs and how you maintain them. God bless you and your family.

  • Muy bien explicado, felicidades, eres cool =) [??]

  • Very nice!!! I love the piggy back braids. You are an amazing braider. I love how you keep the parts so straight. Keep posting videos. oh and is that a baby swing I hear in the background? Hugs!!

  • i think its a washing machine. cuz thatz wat mine sounds like wen it makes noises

  • now thats a good ma

  • this is super cute.... LOL i might even try it on myself :)

  • Comment removed

  • those are some cute hairstyles for little girls. i don't have any kids yet but when i do im definitely gonna do some piggy back braids, and hopefully i will know how to cornrow by then too!

  • 8:14 Piggy Back Braids into a pony tail. That is so adorable and feminine. I just might do that for my own hair. LOL Great job can you do a separate video just for that one. Are those pink barettes?

  • i always braid overhanded ^^, I like braiding my little sisters hair (she's 6 years old) and she is very easy to brais ^^, We are norwegian, so she does'nt have that dark curly afro hair, she has blonde long hair, almost buttlenght ;D i love her hair ^-^ youre very good at braiding, love your videos ;D keep up the good work =D

  • Katelynlyn, not only are you a very talented artist and excellent instructor, I'm so happy you are representing for the white women (like me) who actually know how to care for their child's afro/textured hair! I'm sure you often get approached by people asking who does your daughter's hair, as if there's no way you could have done it yourself! (I sure do!)

Now, after learning these styles from you, I'm sure I'll hear it even more. Guess I'll just have to deal with it ;)

    THANK YOU :)

  • I know having black children you get critized alot but from one mother to another i would like to say Thank you. it's not about color it's about using your maternal instinct to do whats best for your children and I commend you for even taking the time to learn about our hair, that in itself is commendable but anyway i don't want to write a book just wanted to let you know how i felt if nobody else did thank you and stay blessed:)

  • I am not "practicing" on anyone! She is my daughter and I have worked very hard, put a lot of thought and research into what I do with my girls hair. I have been gleaning as much info on how to properly care for her hair as I can for the last 3 years. I am always learning something new and I have gone to using all natural products on her hair - which is VERY healthy and beautiful. Thanks for the advice, but I could do with out the rudeness or the assumptions!

  • you are doing an excellent JOB!! PLease ignore the ignorant people. I commend you for this type of work. It ain't easy. Some black women are so quick to relax their childrens hair; it saddens me. Thanks for your video!

BTW you are an excellent braider! =]

  • please people stop calling them box braid, call them what they are PLAT BRAIDS. also it would have been easier it you used the tail of the comb to part her hair. Also african pride makes a leave in condition that has 14 herbs that will make the hair super soft without using grease, and it wont matter if it drys or not.....

  • you sound like such a hater :(

  • Comment removed

  • Oh wow .. the little girl's hair is soooo long. I wish my hair was that long.

You are very talented... keep it up :D

  • ugh i hated these braids when i was little!! lol cause i always wanted th singless...=( but good job!

  • Hi, thank you ever so much for all these awesome videos!!! I am really inspired and my daughter gats her hair done in funky styles more regularly now! :o) I am still struggling to cornrow angles and curves... it's all a big mess :o( Any chance of you making a video about zig zag cornrows??? Thanx! :o) Muza

  • U're awesome. God Bless u and da girls.

  • I think you are so awesome for taking the time out to learn how to do their hair. Your daughters will thank you later in life.

  • gr8 job on ur vidz! keep up the gud work!

  • This was my favorite hairstyle when I was little. I was just wondering how to do this. Thanks!

  • nice job~your daughter is so cute also very patient~you should let her play with a doll or a favorite toy while doing her hair~love the piggy-back braids w/beads i used to have some of the same hairstylz as a little girl

  • My girl usually watch movies during hair time - It help keep them looking straight ahead!

  • i have just done that on my self .. but the parting aint straight but it still looks good it does hurt quite abit lol

im so proud of my slef

  • what is the bead tool you use called and where do i get one?

  • you're an awesome teacher on how to do hair!

  • so cute

  • She's such a sweet and patient little girl! I know lots of kids that would be whining and screaming 3 minutes in!

  • wait till nap time to do their hair then :) its what I do, especially with under 3 yr olds. or likesaid before put in a movie or record some sesame street :) good luck

  • You do such an amazing job on ur daughters hair.. wanna come do my daughters hair!! ololol

  • Great Job. She is sooooooooo adorable. You hooked her hair up. It's a cute style

  • WOW. This brings back great memories. My mom use to give me this hairstyle. I remember sitting on the floor between her legs, sitting on the chair and my favorite, laying across her lap while she does my hair. Mommy I love you!

  • omg! awesome!! thanks!!!

  • Looks neat but I know her head was hurting!

  • u should use [lets jam]

    instead of [gel]

much better for her hair =].

    conditions it too.

  • I love Lets Jam

  • me too.

    cuz i recently went natural

    like a month ago

it makes my edges smoother when i put headbands on =]

since i really cant wear nothin but a fro *tears*

  • No tears girl (or boy) YOU WENT NATURAL...THAT'S AWESOME!!!

  • lol.

    imma girl.

    and thankss =].

  • AH-HA!!! No WONDER my daughter's piggybacks weren't turning out right!

I was taking THREE sections for the next braid, instead of just taking TWO and using the previous braid in place of the 3rd section. Mine were "almost" right but bulky. Now I know how to do it correctly. My MIL is a master of the piggyback braids. I cannot cornrow but I can definitely do this. I can't wait to really start doing my girl's hair like this now!

  • WOW!! that is soo cute, for real, my baby is a year and already has thick hair, i tried doing something like this but i could never get it right, now i see you doing it and it helps alot! thank you!

  • awesome

  • very god! i ain't got any kids but the hairdos looked so pretty! really cute

  • Hello Katelynylyn, kudos for taking time to learn to manage your child's hair :-)

Their hair look so soft and moist! May I know what routine (washing, moisturizing, etc...) u use on their hair? How long approximately does it take you to style each one's hair?

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I tried it on my daughter once and it's not as good as yours, but I'll keep trying, lol!

  • wow i like that my daughter is mixed so her hair is a little different b/c its really really curly her hair looks so nice to braid anyways thanks for the ideas how did you add the bead s in between are those snap beads? also, when you finsihed the first box braid how did you add the other braids without showing the first braid you understand

  • If you are asking about the picture at the end of the video with beads inbetween - they are not snaps - I just put the bead on the braid before I started the next section. I am not sure what you are asking in the second question.

  • THEY REMiND ME OF MY HAiR BUT MY HAiR WAS MUCH LONGER WEN i WAS YOUNGER BUT MY MOM GAVE ME A RELAER WEN i WAS 8 i AM ALMOST 13 AND MY HAiR iS STiLL TRYNA BECOME NATURAL AGAiN AND iT DOESNT GROW AS iT USED TO POOR ME BUT KEEP UP THE GOOD WORk AND i jUS REALiZED iT WAS TWO DiFF GiRL THERE |.:*GOURGEZ*:.|

  • Katelynylyn, it looks like you have made braids with beads across the parts ( on the Christmas style--I found it) and I wonder if you can show how that's done.

  • on the christmas style I had piggybacks going from front to back, but I also made one row of piggybacks that went across the head (it was supposed to kind of give the illusion of a headband). You can add beads to any piggy back braids as long as the braids are small enough to fit through a bead hole. Just slide a bead on the braid before adding the hair to the next box. So in the Christmas style I had added beads inbetween each new box of the piggyback row that went across her head.

  • Thanks K, in trying to do the piggy-back braids, I'm finding that my daughter's hair is pretty thick, so I'd need BIG beads, but they would stand out too far.

  • I am adopting my daughter from Ethiopia and I will be "borrowing" some of your beautifully creative styles. Your daughter's are lucky that you have taken the time to learn to properly care for their naturally beautiful hair. May I suggest that you switch to a wider toothed comb(rat-tail)? This type of comb with inevitably cause unneccesary breakage. Please keep sharing. I get inspired just watching you. I have actually practiced a couple of styles on my Chinese daughter:)Thank-you

  • Amazing! Thank you so much for the tutorials!

  • i love the christmas hair do as well as the piggy backs that go into a pony tail. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS! they are extremely helpful. and i have to go pretty slow now. but hopefully ill get faster.

  • I wish I had these when my daughter was tiny, I waded my way through treating her hair, still due to some extent. LOL But thanks for the great ideas!

  • Very cute. I think I'm going to try it with my daughter... if she stays still long enough. Keep the videos coming I need ideas. Love your videos great braiding.

  • Her hair is nice. I hope you never subject your daughter to relaxers of any kind. She's an excellent and patient model.

  • Katie,

Each time I watch one of your videos it is like an ahhh haa moment for me! Thanks for doing this can't wait to try it out on my little one. Loved the Christmas picture at the end!

Have a blessed and Happy Christmas

  • Beautiful thank you for a new hair style I can do with my daughters hair:o)

  • WONDERFUL creativity!!!!

Your videos are an asset to have here on YouTube. I hope you NEVER delete them!

Thank you so much for your service/information to the public!!!!

  • That girl is adorable!!!
