i for one applaud you for rocking that pro reverb, and recording it with really bad sound quality. your helping me keep the blackface pro reverb the best kept fender secret. now i can buy them all !!! seriously though, these amps rock. 40 watts, 2x12. its the best of a vibrolux reverb, and a twin.
This is FUN!!!!!!!!!! That's why I play guitar. To have FUN. I can't believe how seriously some wankers take themselves. Kick out the Jams Mofos and PCE OOT
@dawebdisa Your an idiot for making such accusations....You have no idea how AWESOME this guy plays, he is in one of the top bands in our area and this video gives him no justice, he is just showing what the amp sounds like cranked.. So why dont you curb your lame comments when you don't know what the heck your talking about... PCE OUT.
The Pro Reverb wants to be modded. Pull the first tube out, replace the 12at7 with the 12ax7, snip the trem out of the circuit (one wire), and try running a series resistor and cap from pin 1 to the volume pot (bypasses part of the tone stack). THEN try this video again! Tons of harmless, but pracically required, mods for this amp. Its a monster in hiding!
Sure if you put Celestions in it... it's gonna get all midrangey. But that's not the best sound it can make. Put a real guitar through it. One with hand wound pickups good wood and nitro finish... oh.... say like a vintage fender or gibson.. and play the original special design fender speakers, Jensens or Oxfords and the break up is much more "fine" and glassy. The mids are attenuated - it's far more complex. An ibanez punishing the front end into British speakers ends up sounding like a pedal.
I love the santana-ish feedback you can get with this amp driven to its limits. Is this level of feedback possible with a single coil guitar? (I use a gibson sg with p90's) I was thinking also, for the volume issue, could you just use a booster pedal to provide a clean boost so the tubes are driven but the amp volume is still suitable for a small gig?
big crunch. zero pedals. the guitar is an old ibanez jem. its the pickup that pushes it over the top. dimarzio X2N. it will crush anything in its path. you must try one.
i played a 64 twin for a while, even removing one of the power tubes and dropping one of the speakers it was too loud to play in most clubs. the tone is unbeatable when pushed, sadly theyre just too loud.
Well I gotta say I'm with the "experts" on this one. I'd love to hear a tele thru that amp. Still, there's some real nice juice flowin' there... I wish I could get an idea of how loud it was.
this thing was loud. all these amps we played that night were loud but this one scared me. if i showed up at a gig with this rig and drove it as hard as that my keyboard player would have my balls in a vice. rightfully so. i used my jem on these because of the x2n. i wanted to see what these things would do if they were pushed against the wall. (i think i have succeeded in doing that).
that coupled with the fact i am not a tele fan. low output and too noisy. thats my "expert" comment. rock on.
I love these old Fender overdriven, but why does everyone always use them with so much treble dialed in. They sound amazing with the eq properly set. Lots of people misunderstand the blackface tone because they only hear these amps with bad EQ settings. With single coils it even more important.
the x2n is too much. btw it's not the stock pup, it's the stock tremolo that makes it sound lifeless. the toneblock is an alloy, terrible sound and sustain. for years i tried every pup combination, because i love the way they play. i always put the pups that i took out of the ibanez, into my strat. and the strat always sounded good with them. so after about 7 years of frustration i decided to go back to the strat. sounds incredible. put in big frets and took the finish off the neck, tata
Wow there is like a million of these amps in every pawn shop. Okay we all know thats BS . it just doesnt matter what guitar he's playing . he is sharing history. plain and simple. these are great amps no matter what style you play. they Break up huge and also throw out a very respectible clean buttery sound. thanx for sharing your amps and gits on here

why would he test one of those?he should use what hes used to, which is his ibanez.which is beter for the price then any gibson i have ever played or owned.and fenters, just no for me, not hard enough.
Ibanez Gems and Rgs tend to be extremely bright sounding guitars. I think they are horrible despite how well they are made. A Les Paul or Strat would have been a much better choice to show the amp.
I wish i had that amp though. Only could afford a silverface pro reverb. Still has the best clean Ive ever heard though :))))
Thanks for sharing. It is interesting however, it would be much easier to get an idea of the amp sound if you used "classic" guitars (e.g. strat, LP).
the best thing about these clips is ITS NOT SOME WANKER PLAYING BLUES LICKS ON A STRAT OR A TELE. not everyone who wants a vintage fender is interested in playing by the rules
So true, I am glad to see people push these vintage amps with shredder guitars or les pauls. I know I wouldn't use that thing for blues or anything, I would use it for sludge or death metal for a different vibe.
I wish all modern guitars would blow up and kill their owners and leave it for all right-thinking fender and les paul owners to pick up their charred wallets, and gold teeth and half-melted silver skulls and reverse crosses and buy more vintage and customshop stuff. It just seems fair to me somehow.
These amps are as good a smooth natural amp as I've ever used to record. You must be LOUD though. The Celestions are replacements, good ones but make this amp way louder.
its not really the guitar, its the pickups. theyre too hot for an amp like this. hell even a modern les paul Classic, with the hotter pickups wouldn't sound to great. the best thing i can thing of to go with that would be a '59 les paul. or a mid 50's strat. man would that be sweet. still its nice to see a vid of a classic amp NOT played with the standard classic guitar. lets you hear a different side of the amp.
Yeah thats what it is. But these pickups are the pickups especially made for the jem. The jem is a modern solo guitar, I see it completely with the pickups. A jem with breeds should be better with this but that is also other wood.
A les paul with alnico 2 pickups is the best, or a good strat, like a blade.
i recently had the chance to try one of these at long and mcquade almost a few hours after i commented here coincidentally, and i tried it out with one of those new Road Worn 50's strat. those tex mex pickups sound killer on it. guitars really nice to, its mexican but i couldn't tell the difference between it and an american unless i looked at the back of the headstock. real high quality. great combo, that and this amp.
I dont say this amp is bad. These things are awesome. I do not like fender mexicans, I dont like fender at all. A blade off half the price sounds better. My california is so much better than 2k+ fenders.
His playing is good, but this isnt what the amp was made for, guitars with high output ceramic pups.
a blade? what do you mean a blade? you mean a blade ceramic pickup? or is there an actual COMPANY blade? but either way, a stratocaster only costs like $1200. they aren't 2k. what is a blade though? im intrigued.
I mean a blade levinson. Its a swiss guitar brand. You can google for blade levinson. A good fender strat costs 2k, well good to my standard. My blade levinson california custom is the best guitar I ever played on, hand made in switserland, handrubbed nitro finnish, sperzel lockers, a great trem, just a fantastic guitar.
an american standard strat, the best the make is $1200 here in canada. wherever you are, youre getting ripped off. i looked up those blade levinson though, they look sweet. i wish they had an original design model though. do you know of any videos or clips or anything where i can hear one?
I am not a fender guitar guy, I think there are better brands. I compared a blade to a fender mark knopfler, the blade was the half of the price and I liked it better. I like they took a strat and gave a twist to it. Mine doesnt really look like a fender. The durango is a blade only design. I think I will make a vid with my brunetti xl r-evo 60 or my superbass, or dsl + blade california custom.
hes just demonstrating the sound, and the amount of gain it produces. open chords demonstrate that best. think Malcolm Young. is his playing crappy? i dont think so.
Best sounding combo amp ever made, in my opinion - AA165 "Pro Reverb", similar to the AB165 "bassman" circuit, but with more preamp tubes for vibrato and reverb, and a tube rectifier.
i agree. unfortunately this thing is ungodly loud. it will peel the paint off a strat from 20 feet away. your band mates would be quite unimpressed with your volume. but you could just tell them to go pound sand. thanks. rock on young camper!
it was still there when i left today. i think its a 69'. its not stock. new speakers. too loud. this thing is too loud. you have to apply for a permit in your town for a legal transfer. big chuckle.
so I got an original pro reverb cheap. 3rd gig its output tranny died. Had local tech replace it (with what is my secret ingredient). I have an attenuater and since the original tranny is gone I dont have any worries running it on 9, with the attenuater. I still think my soldano slo is the best amp I own, but the fender is a photo finish second.
Thank you. We made several amp vids. Check them out. I have been in the music industry for over 30 years and have heard most guitarists pound their chest, blow their own horn and proclaim to be the best and know it all. Its quite comical really. You Tube seems to be a haven for armchair rock and rollers that feel the need to express their superior knowledge and bash anything they don't understand. Its fun to watch. If we come across an AC 30 i will pump it up and let you know. ROCK ON
If you are basing someones playing skills on YOUTUBE audio quality, someone who is probably a guitar shop owner, (not showing off his playing, but showing off the amp) then I am guessing you walk into guitar center every day, (You probably know the cashiers by name, names such as 'bryce' and 'skyler') pick up a 2500 dollar prs that you know you can never afford on your taco bell salary, play a couple clumsy vai riffs on it, and then put it down to return to the hovel in which you obviously dwell
That fucking cool! One day i'll have a tube amp. Until then its an 1985 Peavey 130 Reverb Solo Series for me. Anyhow this video wants to make me jump on my drumkit and jam.
after reviewing the video and chuckling at the responses i feel the need to pipe up again.i guess you could call this a "showcase".in 2.5 minutes i got this thing from zero to 160 miles an hour with both single coils and humbuckers.when we decided to film some of our romps through the amp closet, i didn't want to just set an amp up and play blues licks for 10 minutes.i'll leave that for you....more
it is difficult to play a solid rhythm and manipulate controls every 5 or 10 seconds because after all, this is a "showcase".i'm surprised you don't understand that....more
as for powerchords, i was trying to get all the output i could from the guitar to push the amp further. i'm suprised you don't understand that either....more
unfortunately i will have to agree with "tony".before the days of stomp boxes and drive channels this is how it was done.hence the title of the vid.some of the most memorable guitar chops of my life were recorded on amps of this ilk.guitar tone is very subjective and personal.one man's trash is another man's treasure.that's the beauty of it.looking forward to your reponse.respectfully,ian.

Well, if nothing else the amps get thoroughly tested :)
If there was something weak in any of them, it would have sent the amp into flames.
This way customer gets A+ amp for sure :)
Any other quality category wouldn't have passed CMs testing :)

so I got an original pro reverb cheap. 3rd gig its output tranny died. Had local tech replace it (with what is my secret ingredient). I have an attenuater and since the original tranny is gone I dont have any worries running it on 9, with the attenuater. I still think my soldano slo is the best amp I own, but the fender is a photo finish second.
By the way, Killer tone bro!!!!!!!!

At last some people who "get" these vids. They go over most peoples heads. Thanks.

No ear protection? How do you manage to not get tinnitus with these vids? Or do you just have earplugs on, and I can't see?
