To all those that have read what rinkuss has written:
1. It is a lie that I wrote anything to his/her personal inbox and is an obvious attempt to discredit what I have posted.. I can only guess the reasons behind this. When I did attempt to send Rinkuss a message to inquire as to why they would post such a fabrication the account used by "rinkuss" has been deleted.
2. Fact - Rinkuss did send a threat to my inbox stating that they were from internal affairs and hoped to get me disciplined
Hey, how can you be a Senior Advisor and not know what a POE looks like? Or the everyday enforcement activities of the CBSA? "Enforcement?? We do that??" Who knows, but it's all part of the magic.
I am not a subject matter expert in HR but this is an awesome human resources management (HRM) book for both students and practitioners. A previous edition served as the textbook for an HRM course that I studied. For those who want to explore the subject of selection---it's really, really, good.
Excellent satire that accurately reflects flawed hiring processes within many GoC departments! Congratulations on the great video and capturing the context of the issues!
I love it - it couldn't be a more accurate representation of exactly what this joke of a process is. And when something is a joke, then we should treat it just as that. To all you holier-than-thou people and your blah, blah, blah...I am very sure if you were in the same position at any level you would be right beside everyone that is angry. To have the last competition (an excellent testing process BTW) cancelled and replaced with this one is absolutely disgusting, insulting and just a joke!!!!
I too am a victim of the last two FB-06 competitions and all I have to say to those who believe we are complaining too much - let's chat next month when a current CR-04 or FB-02 is a senior program advisor on your team.
Since my last post, I've been pondering solutions. FYI - New to CBSA, I came from the Private Sector a few years ago. As an employee, last week I found CBSA’s Informal Conflict Management System (ICMS) to be invaluable. Their website can be found on our Intranet---Atlas. Discussing concerns with a neutral ICMS representative can help parties to focus---consider more options. Resolving conflict at the lowest level possible will reduce tensions and produce the best result…a win/win solution.
@markegeres Call us back once you've been there for 10 - 15 years and you are told that you no longer qualify to do the job that you've become a departmental expert at and just to kick you in the pants, you have to train your wet behind the ears replacement! What will ICMS do for you then?
D18, When your initial acting was up did you offer to step aside to give a co-worker the chance to develop their skills? Doubtful-youd've lost your seat on the gravy train. Ever lobby Sr Mgmt to appoint you, using your "glowing" assessments as rationale?(Contrary to belief, some mgrs still do this at CBSA)Not your responsibility right?
So much for teamwork, initiative& assertiveness.
Good people passed-good people failed. it happens. Spare us the CBSA doesn't care for security BS and move on.
No disputing this process was flawed but posting this video isn't "making a difference. It is reinforcing the stereotype of civil servants who are petulant, self-serving and suffering from a severe sense of entitlement. Entitlement in this case to an over-inflated salary which resulted solely from re-classification. SPAs in most other depts make about $8-10K less for the same work--probably equal to your substantive pay i expect. Bear that in mind as you seek to bite the hand that feeds you.
It is always safe to assume, not that the old way is wrong, but that there may be a better way. -- Henry F. Harrower.
Working together---senior management, union, HR subject-matter-experts---we can improve on future recruitment / competition processes. Let's do this in 2011!
I suspect that douanes18's sentiments are shared by many people who have participated in this specific recruitment/competition process. It's disheartening to learn that douanes18 had not been treated fairly...yet her/his sense of humour, creativity, comedic expression speaks to the subject in a way that makes us chuckle.
And with "All due respect" cricket81, if you can point to any private industry as an example that uses standardized tests as a sole means to promote, I will quiet up and say that yes I'm on the bitter wagon as opposed to the "reality check" police. Even many managers and senior managers have the foresight to realize that the Agency could experience a serious "brain drain" which you obviously are not even realizing will be an issue. This isn't about being bitter, this is about being respected
Well Cricket81, your comment would hold weight had I not passed most competitions and not been successful on a couple, and NEVER even blinked an eye but rather thought how can I improve for the next time? In this current situation I shouldn't even have to ask that question because for five years I have been assessed at the senior advisor level and ALL of my assessments have been glowing, so how is it that all of a sudden I don't possess the skills to do the job? Please explain that. Anyone?
To cricker81 - I don't mean any disrespect but your comment was a little rude don't you think? I believe the video is accurate. It may be harsh but it's the truth. The competition process for all government departments must change. It may not affect you but it affects others. You should look at yourself in the mirror as you are insulting the ones that are trying to make a difference.
With all do respect douanes18 as well as those who have jumped on the bitter bandwagon towards the FB-06 process, maybe you should take a good long look at yourselves in the mirror and you'll realize that the reason for being unsuccessful in this process does not lie in the PSC exams but in your lack of professionalism as is demonstrated by this video. Your obvious disrespect for the PS values and ethics will hopefully continue to deny you a leadership role in our organization.
so glad you made this video... I know this represents your case for CBSA but there are many similarities with other departments in the governments from program officers to analysts and to HR Advisors....SORRY... meant "Voodoo science" advisors!
3. And my final point, before you take shots at me "supposed" seniorprogramadvisor, you say "taking shots at the Agency that provides me with a living is pretty pathetic", oh contraire, I think it is pretty pathetic that an Agency could rely on its Advisors for many years and then open a competition that does not even recognize that contribution. Five years and yet someone with two weeks, that's right, two weeks can get screened in based on how the poster is written? That my friend is pathetic
2. Baisc tests? Really? I took social sciences in University, graduated with a Master's degree, and never were my writing skills assessed based on a multiple choice exam with no negative deductions for wrong answers. To your point about tax dollars, as you may realize, I too am a tax payer and can't believe that my national security is reduced to a multiple choice exam for those tasked with creating policy.
... and here's douanes18's response to my comment, which was sent to my inbox instead of being posted here. I think it demonstrates the level of maturity we're dealing with here:
"Wow, only a loser spelled "rinkuss" would take the time to write that pathetic comment which relates to an obvious error made only because of speed. But hey, you obviously have no life so...WHATEVER. "
If you're going to post a video on YouTube to bitch about your job, you're fair game for teasing. Grow up ...
1. So you believe those standardized tests are a fair assessment of someone's written skills? Interesting that I know Directors, DGs, managers and so on, with actual English degrees that have failed those tests NUMEROUS times, so I guess they should leave their positions based on your methodoloy.
While this whole process has been quite flawed, blaming your failure on the standardized tests administered by the PSC and taking public shots at the agency that provides you a living is pretty pathetic. If you don't have the writing or grammar skills to pass the WCPT then you have no business being an FB6.
douanes18 - I think that taxpayers would be more shocked if they knew that people who lack the ability to pass basic tests are being paid $87,000/year with their tax dollars.
Have gone through this process and have felt the pain of many. President Rigby should be ashamed that this is even happening with his full knowledge and apparent consent. They have LOST MANY qualified and fully experienced applicants, and one wonders why they are continuing with this approach. In all my years of loyal and dedicated service to the government, I have never seen a competitive process that totally ignores previous experience, skills and knowledge this one has!
@douanes18 You say this as if you actually have any say whatsoever in border security ... So what do you actually do? Draft policy for the importation of fake fur stuffed toys? The real border security is performed at the actual borders, not in the back rooms of Ottawa. Time to get back in the real world where the rest of us actually live ...
