American was in a tough position after 9/11 - how the heck do you say "We're sorry we let a bunch of guys with box cutters use our planes to kill 3,000 people because we were lax in our security"? This is about the best possible commercial that they could after 9/11 - and yes, the closing scene does bring a lump to my throat.
0:41 That runway over the traffic reminds me of O'Hare. Although I live near Chicago's Midway Airport, I've seen some of the action at O'Hare and recall that type of runway. I wonder if segment was indeed taped at O'Hare.
@germanname1990 I think it could've been. I just took off from O'Hare yesterday and recall taxiing on a ramp that appeared to go over traffic. Possibly the traffic was going into the entrance at O'Hare.
Epic! Well done AA. Am an AAdvantage frequent traveler/flyer. One of the few carriers which still retains the same colors & logo for quite some time now. It works, recognizable and it sells, don't ever change it! Those Silver Bird Luxury Liners are eye catching and the name/title SAY IT ALL.Remember when BAs art tails flopped, ANZ can't get their Koru right, ACs maple leaf is always a different tone/shade & now JAL is going back to it's old crane logo. It's good being American!
@Serganer Come again? they 'let' hijackers fly the planes into the towers and pentagon. let me reiterate what it means to hijack. "successful, forceful and unlawful breach and takeover of the aircraft with malicious intent" No one on the planes or in the airline saw this coming. and we're damned as hell preventing another 9/11. No one "let" hijackers do anything. The fact that these acts happened and American is still flying is proud to the spirit of what it means to be AMERICAN. we don't bow!
@adams8pjoy Excuse me, but a corporate decision to hire private security at dirt cheap rates with lax security procedures that allow or miss knives is "letting" them hijack planes.
@DYLAV8R - It's not only communists who think this system is unsustainable. Perhaps you might like to expand your range of insults by learning of just how many people think this kind of advertising is ideologically corrupt.
Well, I hated the way American treated ex-TWA members, but I love the post 9/11 ad, just because they bear the name American. I'm also working on an FSX version.
I'll tell ya, I fly UA and not really American anymore, but I have to admit, WELL DONE American, whoever was their advertising exec. on these commercials deserves an AA Terminal named after them. Keep up the good work AA, and don't change the logo!
I remember watching this commercial when I was 8yrs old after 9/11....For some reason I always had memories of it but when I saw it again here on youtube it almost made me cry.......
Ok, true Cathay is more luxourious and safe, BUT only because it flies less than AA. I flew form DFW to Orlando International, flying an MD-80.Small plane, great pilot.
@KCFlyer2 The song is an original piece made especially for the American Airlines "Way of Life" and "Engine" commercials. The soundtrack was composed by Chicago based Steve Ford Music.
The track was eventually reused for the TWA/AA merger and More Room Throughout Coach "Effort" commercials.
i have flown on many airlines and american airlines is one of my favorite least to say if you are in the s-80 and you hit turbulence the plane does shake a little too much.
I flew from PHL to ORD and back and i had a good experience on AA with the S-80. that S-80 is a beast. I love the song they have on this clip as well.
that is true the national american airlines flights are alright but when youi get to internatinonal they treat you pretty good. but when you et to the european airlines now they treat you like gold. But i stilll like American Airlines though!
Jetblue out of JFK, you're nuts because I've seen what Jetblue's pax look like and the terminal needs renovations their check in staff sucks, but if you want a really bad airline try Southwest
Delays aren't always the fault of the airline but have to do with air traffic and weather. As far as losing luggage prove that they are any worse than any other airline. I'd take their pilots any day of the week over some of these small start up airlines like JetBlue.
I have and yet I still think AA is one of the best. Cathay Pacific sucks, even though everyone says they're so great. I hate those damn women who think they're everything just because they look good.
Well, I've had several bad experiences with them. And yes, they were bad. Some crew members were excellent, others not at all. And flying for 2 hours with turbulence from the Sea of Othoskt to Alaska en route to JFK and not being allowed to use the bathroom is just torture. The pilots should have climbed higher, but they did not. I hate CX and regret flying with them. It's a personal opinion, but I strongly hate them.
You're missing the point. You climb higher to get out of the turbulent patch. The 777 was at 35,000 feet- it easily could have gone up to around 40,000 quite safely.
And your question is just a tad silly. When I flew AA 168 recently from NRT to JFK, we hit a really rough patch of air right upon taking off from NRT. And why the heck are we having this pointless discussion. You can love that damn Cathay Pacific Airways all you want and I'll hate their guts for the rest of my life.
No actually you are missing the point, there are numerous reasons they didn't climb higher...one being other traffic. Also as I stated before climbing higher does not necessarily equate to a smooth ride. I have over 10,000 hours now and I have learned some times you can have a smooth ride at 15000' and then rough as hell at 35,000'. How many accidents has your glorious AA had? That's right a LOT. How many has Cathay had? almost NONE...I think I value my life to much to get on AA.
Traffic? What bullshit! How many flights does CX have? How many does AA have? Which airline's older?
I don't know why you started this pointless argument, but I'll fly AA for many years to come I'm proud to be their customer. They've served me well and will continue to do so.
To end this discussion: You can fly on whatever airline you want. I'll fly on AA and its fellow oneworld carrier, JAL, when visiting Asia. JAL > AA >>>>> CX. I refused to be served by snobbish Hong Kong flight attendants. And I'm no racist because while I was raised and born in the US, my family's from Hong Kong and mainland China.
AA is safer according to the statistics found at airsafe on the web. AA has logged over 25 million flights to Cathay's less than 1 million. So if you take frequency into consideration, which is a must here, then AA is more safe!
Airlines cant cotrol the weather or where they can fly they are told what to do by ATC !duhhh Only a fool wud jude an airline by the weather i mean such stupidy
Because they haven't had deregulation like we've had in the US. Look up the Deregulation Act of 1978 and how it turned our air industry into a commodity. The people bitching about lack of amenities wouldn't have been able to afford to fly back in the glory days. You get what you pay for.
I know some AA employees that have 15 or more years working with the company and they said to my father in a conversation that working in AA today is a nightmare and todays AA ownership don"t follow the great things and the footsteps that C.R. Smith and Bob Crandall did for the company.
Of course. CR Smith and Bob Crandall really were remarkable and because of them, American was in a good state until the early 2000s. After Gerald Arpey (and 9/11), American just cut back too much. They're losing the support of their passengers and crew.
There will be a day that AA will be THE Airline that everybody wants to fly. Come on AMR think about changing the system of ownership and teamwork of Arpey and his Gang change the way do they work.
Sorry, sorry... I was thinking of United, and the nose/tail tip looks like a 727, my first time watching it I missed the lack of the air intake above the fuselage. Also, they've got a lot of clips in the video from other commercials before 2001, like the DC-10s. Good catch Dan!
iv seen this about 50 times since u posted it to this day they shude put this back on the air theyed make so much cash then they cant take away bagage fee haha
The S80 has two different tails featuring on different versions of the DC-9-8x. The difference is actually in the sweep, and I'm certain they have a healthy spattering of both given their acquisition of TWA (who acquired Ozark's MD80s) and RenoAir (Which had quite a few MD80s). You might notice it if you see a bunch of them in a row on the tarmac at DFW, it's very recognizable when six or seven of them are side x side and are of different configurations but the aerodynamics are largely the same.
I fly AA all the time out of BOS, they go where I need to go. My mother works at AA BOS, and they've had quite a few route reductions (Shannon and Manchester are gone, Paris and London have seen frequency hits, SJU's been reduced after the SJU bloodbath earlier this year, DFW and STL have been toned down, AE cut 35% of their destinations between FY06 and 07). Used to be much bigger, but there's talk of adding more routes (They've hired more agents, OPS has expanded), so keep watching!
I agree, but I feel sorry for the good employees who are getting the shaft from management. American at O'Hare sucks. Nothing but the fatest, laziest, pilots I have ever seen. Believe me these guys blow each other
for everyone who is arguing about which airport the Boeing 767 is crossing the bridge at at 00:41, it is not O'Hare or Dallas Fort Worth. that shot was taken at Luis Munoz Marin Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Nope, I checked Google maps, looked at the sattelite view, and there is no rail line that passes down the median of the highway that passes under the taxiway. That is only at O'Hare.
It's ORD. They did all their post-9/11 commercials at ORD. If you have a Jetnet login you can see what I'm talking about in their PR section. They do the vast majority of their PR at ORD, while DFW is the only place in the world where AA's training is done, and where corporate offices still reside. I don't know why, but it's just done that way.
Here's the definitive answer: it's a B767 crossing the Bravo bridge at ORD headed towards 32R. Look close - the roadway turns left after passing under the taxiway (at DFW the road is straight N/S through the airport), and 2 blueline trains pass each other in the dark track area in the center. This plane doesn't have the massive flap track fairings that the A300 has beneath its wings. I'm an AA S80 FO based DFW used to be based ORD - I've seen this view many times commuting in from my crashpad.
can't be Skylink, because that opened around 2005, and this commercial was made some time after 2001. The intercity train that goes to DFW doesn't pass under any taxiways, so this in all likelihood is a shot of a 767 at O'Hare.
gotta love this airline. I have flown with them many times and enjoyed each time. This is soo inspirational and emotional. I think it was a sincere commercial no bs behind it. GO AA!!!!!
This song is so emotional to the terror of 9-11 i think American Airlines should be rewarded for this T_T im crying like a lot if i watch this video. Thank you

"The strength of an airline is not represented by its employees, it is represented by the people behind the office door."
matrixtc16 3 years ago
Well said. As a former airline employee I always tried to do my very best despite what the aholes behind the office doors were up to.

The nose of the first aircraft landing is a 727 but the tail is an MD-80. I wonder how they pulled that off? Safe flying to all!!
JHinMiami 3 years ago 8
No, way too swept back to be an MD80's tail.
lordvader3215 3 years ago
The S80 has two different tails featuring on different versions of the DC-9-8x. The difference is actually in the sweep, and I'm certain they have a healthy spattering of both given their acquisition of TWA (who acquired Ozark's MD80s) and RenoAir (Which had quite a few MD80s). You might notice it if you see a bunch of them in a row on the tarmac at DFW, it's very recognizable when six or seven of them are side x side and are of different configurations but the aerodynamics are largely the same.

LOve, love, LOVE American AirlineS!...That's the only way I choose to fly!.....DFW is my home airport, so It couldn't work out better!
Wildcats8907 3 years ago
wildcatsi i envy u and DFW, MIA, and ORD airports lol we need more AA at BOS. Jetblue and Delta dominate BOS right now... AA is third
louie77 3 years ago
I fly AA all the time out of BOS, they go where I need to go. My mother works at AA BOS, and they've had quite a few route reductions (Shannon and Manchester are gone, Paris and London have seen frequency hits, SJU's been reduced after the SJU bloodbath earlier this year, DFW and STL have been toned down, AE cut 35% of their destinations between FY06 and 07). Used to be much bigger, but there's talk of adding more routes (They've hired more agents, OPS has expanded), so keep watching!

American has a bunch of jerk employees, they blow, TWA all the way. O'Hare blows too
STLBluesrule44 3 years ago
I agree, but I feel sorry for the good employees who are getting the shaft from management. American at O'Hare sucks. Nothing but the fatest, laziest, pilots I have ever seen. Believe me these guys blow each other

for everyone who is arguing about which airport the Boeing 767 is crossing the bridge at at 00:41, it is not O'Hare or Dallas Fort Worth. that shot was taken at Luis Munoz Marin Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
MattA2010 4 years ago
Is there a railroad that passes under the taxiway in the median of the highway at the San Juan airport, Matt?
chicagoman58 4 years ago
yes, but i don't remember what Pyuerto Rico uses it for, seeing as how the last time i went was in 2004.
MattA2010 4 years ago
i've never been to that airport, but having taken the L many times to O'Hare, I can say that sure looks like O'Hare.
chicagoman58 4 years ago
that bridge is for the a/c parked on the new terminal A, which will open soon and terminal B (Delta, USair, etc.)
simpcalo 3 years ago
Nope, I checked Google maps, looked at the sattelite view, and there is no rail line that passes down the median of the highway that passes under the taxiway. That is only at O'Hare.
chicagoman58 3 years ago
no it is not, that is at JFK, i live 2 miles away from JFK and land there several times a year so i know what it looks like.
phycokay 3 years ago
are there two sets of train tracks that run down the median of the highway under the taxiway at JFK? If not, then that has to be O'Hare.
chicagoman58 3 years ago
It's DFW. I guarantee it.
jcs1744 3 years ago
nope, it's O'Hare - even the lamp posts along the highway are identical with what's at o'hare.
chicagoman58 3 years ago
NOOOO its Boston Logan International....hahah jk, but yeah its either ORD or JFK
louie77 3 years ago
It's ORD. They did all their post-9/11 commercials at ORD. If you have a Jetnet login you can see what I'm talking about in their PR section. They do the vast majority of their PR at ORD, while DFW is the only place in the world where AA's training is done, and where corporate offices still reside. I don't know why, but it's just done that way.
mspencer02 3 years ago
ah. I;ll have to ask my brother for his jetnet login info :P.
Where under the PR Section is it?
Also may I ask how long have you worked for american?
jetfighter2011 3 years ago
Here's the definitive answer: it's a B767 crossing the Bravo bridge at ORD headed towards 32R. Look close - the roadway turns left after passing under the taxiway (at DFW the road is straight N/S through the airport), and 2 blueline trains pass each other in the dark track area in the center. This plane doesn't have the massive flap track fairings that the A300 has beneath its wings. I'm an AA S80 FO based DFW used to be based ORD - I've seen this view many times commuting in from my crashpad.
s2bdrivr 3 years ago 3
i love the shot of that 767 crossing the bridge at DFW, haha its cool to drive under those planes if you've ever been there.
john2k24 4 years ago
that's not DFW, that's O'Hare. You can tell by the L train passing under the taxiway. Also, I believe that's an Airbus and not a 767.
chicagoman58 4 years ago
Nope that is most defitently a 767.
Ordflyer85 4 years ago
No it is a 767
hockey31gfs 4 years ago
That could be the new Skylink system @ DFW!!!!!
Wildcats8907 4 years ago
can't be Skylink, because that opened around 2005, and this commercial was made some time after 2001. The intercity train that goes to DFW doesn't pass under any taxiways, so this in all likelihood is a shot of a 767 at O'Hare.
chicagoman58 4 years ago
but it is O'Hare, not DFW.
chicagoman58 4 years ago
haha wow i got a lot of responses to this comment
john2k24 4 years ago
gotta love this airline. I have flown with them many times and enjoyed each time. This is soo inspirational and emotional. I think it was a sincere commercial no bs behind it. GO AA!!!!!
