This is more of a moral issue. Depending on your state laws, If you are unemployed and have no income, you are eligible for food stamp. Unfortunately, this man has the right to his food stamps legally under the law. But under a Moral Law, (which we don't have), this is ludicrous. The biggest problem with Food Assistance is that it counts income not resources. The winnings that he got from winning the lottery would count as income for the month he received it, but it would be considered a resource for ongoing months. They seriously need to reform this and other government programs.

Okay, Michigan needs some means testing, but probably not as severe as the means testing in Missouri. In Missouri combined assets of $1000 (car, house, bank accounts, anything) disqualifies you. So if you need that van with the wheel chair lift to get to the grocery store - you can't get food stamps in Missouri. If you are going into default on your mortgage, and kids are starving in the bad economy in Missouri you can't get them either. THAT is the downside of means testing. Find a middle.
Not sure if each state has their own rules, but I know in MA ( which is also closed to bankruptcy ) does not count assets at all if you are over 60. So theoretically , I guess a non-working millionaire at 60 plus qualifies for food stamps under the current rules which may include all states if that is a Federal rule.

I don't understand this. I have a friend who is LEGALLY on disability. She inherited a house from her dad, that is only worth about 12k. People are ****en stupid. This man did NOT pay $1.15 million in taxes. He received a lump sum as stated in the video, meaning HE chose to get $850,000 at once instead of 2 million (minus taxes) over 10, 20, 30, or whatever years the show would have taken to pay him 2 million.
What he's doing may not be illegal, but I think it is morally wrong.

Okay, Michigan needs some means testing, but probably not as severe as the means testing in Missouri. In Missouri combined assets of $1000 (car, house, bank accounts, anything) disqualifies you. So if you need that van with the wheel chair lift to get to the grocery store - you can't get food stamps in Missouri. If you are going into default on your mortgage, and kids are starving in the bad economy in Missouri you can't get them either. THAT is the downside of means testing. Find a middle.

Not sure if each state has their own rules, but I know in MA ( which is also closed to bankruptcy ) does not count assets at all if you are over 60. So theoretically , I guess a non-working millionaire at 60 plus qualifies for food stamps under the current rules which may include all states if that is a Federal rule.

I don't understand this. I have a friend who is LEGALLY on disability. She inherited a house from her dad, that is only worth about 12k. Her disability payments have stopped because of a "windfall" But sadly it's only costing her money in RE taxes and attorney fees because no one can find the title. This world is really unfair!

I knid of feel bad for the old man. He seems honest enough to find out if he should turn his card in, but if you are poor for a long time then you keep the mentality to utilize whatever assets you can...its not wrong, he just got use to living in survival mode. But furthermnore, 850,000 really isn't a lot of money...Now if it was millions, that's another story.
On the other hand, I work for a non-profit agency and make just enough to not qualify for any help, am educated and poor as dirt. :-(

They don't mention how much of the lump sum the government took, maybe none if they don't consider it something to consider for food stamp allocation.

his winnings are classified as liquid assets, which are not subject to food stamp eligibility; it's his gross income that determines his eligibility for food stamps.
obviously fox wasn't going to bring this up even though it's in every single article about this story. so it's not exactly a loophole, he's operating within the system as it's designed.
