Chances are emoCORE originated in washington DC shortly after the initial hardcore scene burnt out (late 80s). This was the first case the word 'emo' was used to describe. EMO probably originated in the early nineties with bands like American Football, Cap'n Jazz, Braid etc. AFi is really more of a very commercial hardcore punk band, however antithetical that sounds.

You can see from that, they're not holding the top part of the fret, which he'd do if they were upside down. Funny thing is, he's right handed.
