all of the great songwriting of the 70s lives on today and forever. i wish the young writers of today would put there ear buds in and take a stroll thru a time when gas was cheap and weed was free. well almost! mariah carey is nothing but eye candy. she dosen't write any of her own "music". she is a pop singer. which is equal to crap!
it was a hamm/evans collaboration. most people consider 'day after day' to be hamm's masterpiece. that was all his. nilsson's went to #1 in early '72. and tom died in '83.
The story of Badfinger is probably the most tragic in the history of rock. Ham and his best friend Badfinger bassist Tom Evans both committed suicide (by hanging) in in the mid-70's in the UK. Nilsson's cover of this song became world famous in early 1971 and is now considered Ham's singular masterpiece. Unfortunately, Pete never lived to see his song become immortal thanks to Harry's version of it:(
@GUIDOBRAT Thanks for reminding us all about Badfinger. I recently bought a CD of them ....part of the Apple label re-releases and had forgotten what a great band they were.
Search "I'd Die Babe"....George Harrison produced the song and plays guitar....an undiscovered classic.
I love this song, but what the f is with the horrible ballet man!!! It is good that Im mostly just listening to the song and not wathing the entire video
Why everybody put down this lady! She was a struggling actress and she was called in to dance in this poofy dress pjama outfit for our delight! She struggled for many years with alcoholism and petty theft until one day in 1982 she was found dead in a small shack in upper Pennsylvania. In her hands was a crumpled 45 of this amazing song. RIP Miss Maria Boppers
@zorgen123 I was simply correcting a factual error. you obviously are ignorant of the story - and angry that someone doesn't view harry nilsson in the awe-filled way you do. it seems you like to resort to at ad hominem attacks rather than intelligent discourse. Badfinger did want the royalties - but nilsson screwed them over.
why has music like this died???? fake posturing by boy/girl bands, down with their "shit" being cool, totally soulless music, im glad i was born when i was, this is music from the soul, heartfelt.xxxxxxxxxxxxx
@westha1233 Thats not true it was reamde in a very crappy way by Mariah Carrey in the later years with such great pride and gusto in a very inferior way of course.
@informaticscheckout so the fk what. Yes, Badfinger wrote the song and did a pretty poor job performing it. Harry did the song beautifully and really did it justice.
@zorgen123 LOL are you serious? The Badfinger version will always be the best, maybe not the most famous, but the best and most heartfelt. I do agree though that Nilsson really did do the song justice.
I dont think this was a video.... There was no videos back then.... but it was and id\s the vocal performance they measure everyone by today....and of today, maybe a few girls made it... i dont know.... No guy willever sing it like this!
You think this is funny, check out Randy Vanwarmer's you tube viddy of "Just When I Needed You Most" with the chicks doing a precision suitcase dance. The suitcases, I guess, signify the leaving part. Hilarious routine...not supposed to be.
Just because everybody's asking... this clip is from Top of the Pops, and the dancers are Pan's People, TOTP's resident dance troupe, who would show up whenever the artist was unavailable.
@thevoid99 I don't think that is necessarily true, dancing is just another way of expression and just like music, it doesn't necessarily need to express joy...
@tripleJ1955 Ah, the delightful Pans People...they had the ability to piss off teenage girls, excite old men and ruin a great song all at the same time!!!
@tripleJ1955 - Much better dress than today, I must say! Doesn't anyone remember that unwrapping the package is almost as much fun as what you do after it's unwrapped!! Grrrrrrrr!
A pretty, but sad song to play when your old lady leaves you or your dog dies. Disregard the God awful stuff that passed for a video/choreography in '72. This had to of been directed by some old fruit who pranced around in his bedroom throughout his whole childhood wishing he was a princess. {All that being said i remember my older sisters listening to this song when i was just a sprout in the early 70's and couldnt figure out why they'd cry everytime they listened to it}
Silly dancing trivializes this masterpiece.
